As soon as I felt better we decided to conquer Kubah national park, only 22km outside of Kuching. Apparently the national park is also in the film ... Dictionaries with Jessica Alba, I have never seen it though.
Maybe she had a similar near death encounter with a mini snake like Jack. We were about 1000 meters into the joungle, me walking in front of the narrow trek. Suddenly I heard Jack shout "aaaaaaaaaa snake!" (he himself persists that it was an exclamation and not a scream). I turned around and looked into his shocked, wide opened eyes. Within a milisecond my heartbeat went into fluttery mode. Time to PANIC! But I didn't even get that far because in the next second Jacks frighted face turned into a slightly embarrassed smile: "It's already gone. It fled. It was only this big" (he showed about 20 cm). We survived. The rest of the four hour hike was only sweaty but not deadly.
Yesterday we attempted a second time to go to the Semenggok wildlife reserve to see the orangutans. This time we were successful. Our first attempt, three days ago, ended up in the cinema watching Prometheus. Apparently it was "too hot, bus driver go for lunch", so when the swimming pool was closed for renovation the air conditioned cinema was too hard to resist.
So we eventually made it and it was fantastic to see the primates in their natural environment. They were free in the rainforest and only returned to a platform for feeding when they were hungry. We were shown some pictures of orangutans bites which is hard to picture when seeing those quirky, orange fluff-balls dangling in the trees.
While watching the orangutans smack coconuts against trees we made some friends with a Mexican-Japanese couple and a traveller from Spain. Our little group ended up enjoying some seafood dinner and a couple of beers afterwards. It was a good, chilled out day.
