I am sure Phnom Penh can be a lot of things, but for us if was primarily chaotic and emotional. Cambodia has a horrible history which comes alive at many places in town. Yesterday we went to Tuol Sleng Prison Museum which was hard to see already but the killing fields, which we saw today, beat that experience by far. Even the trees in the small area tell the sad story of killings and torture of millions of people.
We walked along the paths of the mass graves, across the bones that are slowly washed out the ground by the rain. Even with 30 degrees in the shade, it gives you a chill to the bones. After seeing these places and learning about the relatively recent past we saw the city with different eyes. It seems as if the present life, in many aspects, is a remaining scar of the deep wound that the Khmer Rouge had cut into Cambodia's past.
In spite of Cambodia's history, Phnom Penh is a great place and there are ways of lightening the mood, like a jug of beer for only $2 or a "happy herb pizza"...
