We actually managed to organize a dinner in Chengdu with the Chinese family we met on the train. They brought four more friends of which only one spoke a little bit English, so it was an interesting evening with conversations in body language.
They were all very nice and wined and dines us with pretty much everything that the menu offered... so also a lot of unusual stuff which I just couldn't get down me. We had a hotpot which means that all the dishes arrive raw on plates and then you put them in a pot in the middle of the table which is filled with hot oil and spices... kind of like fundue, it is just not on a stick.
Our Chinese hosts were very keen for us to try all of the Chinese delicassies they had ordered and then watched how we ate it and if we liked it. I felt quite embarrassed because I had to turn down a lot of the things they strongly tried to convince me to try. It didn't look much better than they described it "cow insides" actually looked like the skin of a cow tongue - black skin with spikes on it. The other delicassy I really couldn't get myself to eat looked like a long jelly string with more spiky strings dangling from it. Apparently it was more from the "cow inside" and I had to turn it down with an appologetic smile. Jack was my hero and actually ate everything subtly that they had put on my plate, he must have had ten of those meatballs which tasted like spongy frog stomach. After a while I just said I wasn't that much into meat and preferred
vegetables, so I was off the hook.
All in all it was a very nice and interesting evening and we enjoyed it a lot. Our Chinese company were very friendly and showered us in complements how beautiful our eyes and our hair was. If they manage to come to Europe one day dinner is on us.
Today we went to see the Pandas, which were sooo cute. I am going to put up pics soon.
