Where I stayed
What can I say... I am overwhelmed... in a good way though! Let me give you a short overview of the last 36 hours:
Our flight with Etihad was really enjoyable, I never thought I would say that about any flight but even economy class was really posh. Everyone had their own telly and could pick from a lot of films and games... This distracted Jack for hours from sleeping :)
When we arrived at the airport we decided to start the adventure straight away and take public transport to the hostel. We were offered a taxi for 450 RMB and felt a bit ripped off, because online someone had said it would be only 100. So with some strugges we successfully managed to get to our accommodation.
After a little nap we continued with our first day adventure and went to a local supermarket. This was the first time I actually realized that we had made it to China, I have never seen anything like it. 99% of the food they offered was only with Chinese discriptions and funny comic pictures. Every treat becomes a surprise.
A similar situation came up when we had some dinner. We randomly picked a restaurant and ended up at a table with a little grill in the middle and waiters trying to convince us in Chinese to take a big meat platter (that is at least what we thought they said). So very confused we pointed at some dishes from the menu which we then had to cook ourselves on the little grill. So on the first day I already given up on the "being a vegetarian for a month" idea and enjoyed some beaf, potatoes and cucumber. Only later on we realized we had forgotten that you are not supposed to eat fresh salads... oh well... see how we feel tomorrow.
All together it was a good first day. Unfortunately you can't see the sun beause of all the smog but we have some more months where we can make up for that.
Coming soon: Jack eating scorpions. We already saw some delicious looking skewers today: scorpions, crickets, baby mice, lets see what he will go for.
I'll keep you updated.
