Flying into San Diego is a trip - the plane looks like it may land on the roof of someone's house as you descend. The airport is tiny and very close to downtown. We caught a cab to La Pensione Hotel and marvelled as we arrived about 10 minutes later.  A neon archway announces your arrival at night. After a brief, unexplained bout of bad feelings from the jackass who checked us in (apparently, arriving early really pisses him off) we made it into our room. It was super tiny, but clean and cute. Our hotel is located in a section of town called Little Italy. Street medallions in the area tell you about famous Italians from San Diego. The hotel has a nice, tiny courtyard where you can sit and read your monring paper and drink the coffee and cannoli you purchase from the hotel adortable, tiny cafe. best cannoli I've ever eaten. hands down. There is also a small Italian restarant in the building. We tried it our second night. It was just so-so.

An English bar called the Princess Pub is caddy-corner to the hotel. Within the 2 blocks surrounding the hotel is a 7-11 convenience store, the Litle Italy trolley station, another cafe, a couple of pizza joints, some boutiquey shopping that I never went into, and an awesome sushi place with $1 handrolls at happy hour. It was an awesome location. And we were only a few blocks from the Emmbarcadero.

After settling into the hotel room, we had a pint at the Princess Pub and then headed to the waterfront. Heading south toward the pier, we encountereed several art installations. Kelly was mesmerized by the boats in the harbour. We walked past Anthony's famous seafood restaurant, the cruise ship terminal, sereral old ships, an aircraft carrier, a fish market, and finally came to Seaport Village, a touriist trap shopping district that had no redeeming qualities except the view of the ocean and Ben and Jerry's ice cream. YUM! After much searching, we found the trolley and took that to the Gaslamp District. We were exhausted and hungry, so we found a brewer, Rock Bottom, and ordered the sampler and the Asiago Dip with Beer Bread. We liked this place a lot. We also liked the trolley. Around the corner from the brewery, we caught the trolley back to our hotel, bought a cannoli, and went back to the room to plan the next day.
