Coming back from cusco we dropped in to see arequipa, peru. in our guidebook it says that a writer once said "when the moon seperated from the earth it forgot to take arequipa". it it a beautiful place and our favourite city in peru. the city is in a desert surrounded by snow capped mountains, strange to see. the temperatures are hot in the day and very cold at night. the city is charming with some almost muslim stylings to the churches and monastaries. the round tiled domes were not like most we have seen so far.

On a brief phoning home spree we had some excellent news from Linzīs sis Nicola who got engaged to Darren the week before. Congraltulations both of you! We postponed our canyon trek by a day and celebrated their news with beer and rum. More of this when Linz gets back to UK.

we took on a side trip to see colca canyon, known for being a home for condors and a pretty place to see. we pushed ourselves to hike down approximately 1000 metres to see the starkly beautiful scenery and spend the night in an oasis at the bottom, and then early doors to climb back out to catch our bus back to town. note: for those who consider this hike - everyone says there are hotsprigs in the oasis.... in fact they are pretty cold... at least when we were there. As we were focussed on the hike we didnīt bother with getting out at the Cruz del Condor mirador so didnīt really see any condors other than a glimpse of one soaring in eth canyon from the bus window. Not a problem the hike was gorgeous if a little strenous on teh way up at 6am in the morning!.

coming back to arequipa we spent the evening rewarding ourseves to pizza and falafel before making our way to copacabana bolivia.
