The firt major hiccup with our trip occured while we were on our way to the quilatoa loop, a lovely hike through the mountains and valleys in the high andes. while changing busses in latacunga simon had his rucksack snatched with some clothes, our good camera, his mp3 player and a bunch of small but useful and hard to find things. we are a bit upset as this is $1000 in stuff in replacement costs, as well as losing all of our best photos of quito, the amazon, and baņos. we still have a little cheap camera so we should be able to have some basic snaps to share...

we soldierd on however and went on a beautiful hike around laguna quilatoa, a lovely crater lake, and down some steep patchs through amazing vallys and gorges. the next day we got up at 3am (yawn) and went to riobamba where we now write from. tomorrow we will be riding on top of a notoriously dodgy train down the famous ´nariz del diablo´(devil´s nose) before hitting the reportely charming city of cuenca where we will rest a few days and try to replace some of the more necessasy camping gear.
