from ometepe in nicaragua we went down to playa maderas, a little surf beach nar san juan del sur where we camped free for a couple of days and rented a board for some more wave riding. lindsey is improving and is able to get up fairly consistently and is getting better ant getting onto waves without a push. simon is still struggling with his balance but managed to stand up a litle more easily as well. we met lyndsey and eric, an american couple we met before in ometepe, had a beach fire and picked up some argentine surfer hippie types who invited us to party with them in tamarindo
so of course from there we drove to tamarindo beach in costa rica. the border crossing took 3 hours because of long queues and dodgy computer systems. we managed to get there, found cheap camping at a local hotel and hit a crazy reggae night at a place called babylon where we were enteretained by roots reggae, and fire dancing until 2 am. we also met a goup of argentines who are driving home in a campervan (winnebago type) iīm sure weīll run into them again.
next we took some very bad roads to montezuma beach and stayed at hotel lys which was reccomended by victor (a dutchman we met in maderas) it was pretty cool, though the first day in the rain made the place look shockingly dismal, and we got to build a dam and found some crazy rocks that look like theyīd been spraypainted. we took some to show lyle when we get back (simonīs stepfather, once a geologist) hopefully the environment will forgive us this tresspass.
we then faced a grueling drive to monteverde, only to find that a landslide had shut the roads down. we ended up not quite making it to la fortuna, an alternate destination we had been told to visit.
We are now at la fortuna on the side of volcan arenal in central Costa Rica, and have just got back from a short wilderness hike. Volcan arenal is very active and while on our hike wew heard ominous rumblings and saw the volcano eject several large boulders which went bouncing and crashing down the side of the mountain. it made us feel so small and week in comparison to this force of nature.
tomorrow we are heading to monteverde/santa elena to do some hiking in the rainforest, a canopy tour and maybe see frogs!
we expect to be in chauita (sp?) on the carribbean coast for simonīs 30th somewhere with cold margharitas and mostly sharkless bathing. lindsey has also promised that simon will see a sloth before we leave. letīs hope he does!
