We left Oaxaca and drove down a "serpentine" road to puerto escondido, a surf town on the pacific side of oaxaca. The road looked dead straight and maybe 150 miles on the map we had, but i dont think there was a single bit where we werent both turning and going up/down a steep hill. As Betsy is sans power steering it was a good workout and we were both sore when we got there.
apparently the pacific coast bit around puerto e. is pretty unsafe. we didnt stay long but did have a look at the big waves and the town itself. after spending the evening there we hightailed it to zipolite.
Zipolite is one of mexicos only nude beaches. lindsey was feeling a little shy. simon wasnt, but he burned his bottom. It was a pretty relaxed town, with a lot of beach life as cabanas and little restaurants went on for a kilometre perhaps. it was pretty expat and tourist heavy, hot, humid - the kind of place that tries to suck you into lying on the beach all day and doing nothing.
... we only spent 2 nights
from there we had a nice drive up the coast to a little beach near salina cruz which was nearly deserted. the waves there were great, but the current was very stong so we couldnt swim out too far. Simon decided to try belly-surfing and got launched towards the shore by massive waves several times.
from salina cruz we headed to tuxpan gutierez where there was a very pleasant free zoo. we saw lots of birds and monkeys and things from the chiapas region. a big black jaguar came to check lindsey out and pressed himself up against the viewing window inches from where she was standing. they also had a few quetzals which were truely stunning creatures.
The onward drive to San Cristobal de las Casas was up some pretty steep mountains that were not ideally suited to the van, but we made it, and found camping in a little rv park where we found another vw almost identically the same (named mango) her crew, Chad and Ana, seem to be running on a pretty similar basic plan as well, and it was nice to meet them and compare notes.
San Cristobal itself is absolutely amazing. lots of myans gather in the streets and squares to sell colourful weaving work and little dolls and souveniers of sub commandante marcos. Simon tried to find an emilio zapata t-shirt but they didnt have any immediately apparent in any of the markets.
tomorrow we are heading to palenque and then monday well be attempting to cross into guatemala and our first stop there, huehuetenango
ps. we didnt see the posh-sozzled minstrels but we have it on good faith that they wander drunkenly wearing wizard hats and sunglasses (even in the rain) on festtival days.
