Where I stayed

I had thought that I would enjoy a rest day after my few long days on the road but two spanners were put in those plans. The first was that my motel was fully booked - this is the first occasion that this has befallen me on either crossing but maybe I should have realised it was a possibility given that it was Memorial day weekend & even Motels on the edge of town near a Motel might get full. The second spanner was the wind, which had now moved slightly but was perfect for the route to Harvey which instead of being due East was South East, which was the way the wind was blowing.

I could have checked into one of the 2 or 3 other motels on the Mlall site but took the wind and the lack of room at the inn to be signs that I should continue and Harvey and it was only 75m away. So I got up and jumped on my bike and pedalled to Harvey.

I had expected the road to be a little harder. This was because having cycled across half of North Dakota over the last couple of days I had seen the never ending plains start to be replaced by some reasonable rolling hills as I had neared Minot the day before. So I had presumed that this change in landscape would continue. As it did, it did change but not as I had expected.

The rolling hills appear only be to part of the environs of Minot (pronounced 'My Not' as I had discovered the day before). However, after about 20m the roads flattened out but instead of never ending plains I was surrounded by never ending plains which were dotted, well more than dotted, by small lakes and ponds and marshland. As you can see from a couple of the pictures below the openness hasn't changed but the type of land had. It made for a reasonable change and it also meant there were a lot of birds, which added a little song & wildlife to the journey, which has been so far lacking, bar the occasional & undesired dog chase.

Harvey was a quaint town but which didn't quite offer the same entertainment opportunities as the Mall in Minot, that I had departed that morning. It also didn't offer a wide or impressive range of accommodation options. I plumped for the American Motel seen below, which I can't say is on or even near the top of 'my must return to list'. I had a pizza and went to bed rather sad in the knowledge that I woulld probably have to have a rest day in Harvey because the forecast was for the wind to blow at 30mph in exactly the wrong direction. Though the prospect of staying nearly 2 days in Harvey was not enticing it was more so than trying to push into a gale.

As it would turn out I did nothing of the sort the next day and would be glad that I hadn't soldiered on another 50m to Carrington which I had considered doing when faced with the prospect of 24hrs in Harvey.
