After an expected shaky landing - the Sierra Nevada is right around the corner and those mountains always seem to change winds too quick for a plane to adjust right away - we got to one of the smallest airports I have seen in Europe.
Small airport, small town, as I found out pretty quickly. The hostel El Granado was welcoming us with Lena, A German who explained how to get where and when
The original thought process to come here was a book I once read "Mondlaub" by Tanja Kinkel (yes I was too lazy to translate it). The story took place back when this part of Spain was still arabic and specificly in the Alhambra. I always felt once you imagined the story you read in a book, movies about it or the reality could never match that.
Boy was I wrong. The diversity of Architecture, the love for the detail by the Moorish and the overall richness of each room in design, structure and color is just overwhelming. And once you are past the gardens, palaces and little houses, you get to the tower and your head hurts because it just can't fully grasp it. In American Beauty it was once said: sometimes things can be so beautiful it can be painful. I must have taken more pictures of this place than anything else and still it doesn't do it justice. When I finally sat down to let it all sink in I sat between a Palm and a christmas tree. That is the Alhambra for you.
But Granada has even more to offer. The shallow streets, white walled buildings, even the kopfsteinpflaster made me take pictures with my camera and my memory. And for those of you who want to enjoy the night life. Beer and wine for around two Euro and you get one tapa for each drink ... FOR FREE. If there would be an ocean nearby, this place would be unbeatable in my book, but it is top five Europe easily. And even though there is tourism like everywhere else, it was way less obvious than in Barcelona. If you try only a little bit you will be in a tiny little gasse by yourself in not time. Granada, better than the book. Enjoy some pictures.
