Yesterday we were discussing what we wanted to see in Oregon before we left the area and Dan and Lysse had a few in common with us so we decided to travel together to see Crater Lake and the wine producing area of Umpqua Valley..  This morning we met for breakfast and then left our car and most of our luggage at their place.  Dan offered to drive to give us a break...or maybe, like his mother, he feared we may be stranded with the old car. Well anyway, I appreciated taking over the navigating job and the break.

We stopped at three wineries in the northern part of the valley knowing that they produced lighter bodied wines because of the cooler temperatures for growing the grapes.  We bought a bottle of our favorite wine from each stop and then we all admitted we had had enough. At our last tasting room stop, we found out the Elkton School district sponsored a Butterfly facility that employed area students giving them a chance to earn money to attend College.  Jean, for years, has taught a lesson on the Monarch butterfly from caterpillar to full grown so off we went to check out the facility.
The facility has a large screened room that contains the ecosystem to allow the monarch and other species to live out their life cycle.
We traveled on the scenic Tyee Road and stopped at a hamburger joint well known in the valley...but I can't remember its name for a late lunch at about 3:30.  The views out the back overlooked the Hubbard Creek.
Tomorrow we visit Crater lake.  The winding scenic drive, good food and the wine...we all arrived pretty tired. Time for a "nap."

Buzzed by a butterfly.... after three wine tastings that was probably close to what was going on. Love reading about your travels and looking at the pictures. Wish I was doing this trip, but still the blog is the very "next best" thing. I was out of town for a bit and though I would catch up on your adventure during lunch. With the pictures and eloquent narrative, this turned into one very long lunch for me. I should have kept a closer eye on the clock but once I started reading, I could not stop. Like every good story, we wonder what will you do, or come across, next. Keep up the info and any needed clarification, like just who got the pedicure and who did not.
