I got a flight from Seoul, South Korea to my next destination, Bangkok, Thailand. My brother, Joe, had flown here a week before me and was planning on doing a Muay Thai school in a town in the north of Thailand called Chiang Mai. Muay Thai is the Thai kickboxing that you sometimes see in movies. I've never done any kind of martial arts training and thought it sounded like something cool to do so I decided that I would meet up with and join him. (Writing this, I just realized how crazy that sounds).
It turned out, his knee had been hurting him before he even got started and so he went to the hospital there in Bangkok to get it checked out. By the time that I arrived, he was already scheduled for surgery and had gone ahead and rented an apartment in Bangkok for a couple of months to recoup. I crashed at his place for a couple of nights and just visited the notorious Khaosan Road in Bangkok. Essentially, if you're travelling through Thailand, you will eventually end up at some point on Khaosan Road. If you've ever seen the movie "The Beach," then you've seen Khaosan Road. It is full of backpackers and people trying to sell everything from t-shirts, tours to islands, drugs, custom made suits, fake driver's licenses, bootleg movies and buckets of whisky. I wouldn't say that it is the most pleasant place to see in Thailand by any means but it is one of the places that can't be missed. Since Joe was out of commission and I plan on flying out of Bangkok when I leave, I just hung out there for a couple of days and decided to go ahead up north and give the kickboxing a try. I bought a ticket for a night bus and was on my way.
