Nanning
Entry 13 of 29 | show all | print this entry |
I took a "luxury coach" from Yangshuo to Nanning. Nanning is the jumping off spot for trips across the Vietnamese frontier. Actually, the seats on the bus were nice--only three across the bus and I had the single. They looked like business class seats on a plane. Unfortunately, they put them to close together so there was no leg room. It took about 5 1/2 hours. The bus dropped me on the outskirts of Nanning, so I had to take a taxi to the center. Nanning looks a bit like Anaheim, actually. Palm trees lining the rather bland streets, with two Wal-mart Supercenters.
My first order of business was to secure a bus to Hanoi the next day, but it was sold out. This complicated things considerably. After some running around looking for a hotel, I found one. I seemed to be the only white person in Nanning and the staring is worse because of that. The restaurants are much harder to use as well--I found one with pictures and ordered something. I think it was barbecued pork belly on rice. It tasted good enough, but I hadn't eaten anything except a few lychee for breakfast so that might explain it.
Theres not much to do in Nanning. My hotel room had a DVD player and I was tired so I figured I'd go buy a DVD (they go for about 60 cents each). I couldn't decide whether the movies would be dubbed though, so I bought The Last Waltz--the only thing I could be sure wouldn't be dubbed. Got back to my room to discover that the DVD player was really just a cable box. Damn.
