Day 46 - Today we too the 130 mile one way trip to the Outer Banks.  We visited the Wright Bros. monument and the Bodie Island Lighthouse  Unfortunately it was so hot that we didn't explore more of the Banks.  It was over 90 degrees since the wind was coming tom on shore.  Thank goodness for Fat Boyz Ice Cream Shop.

Four other men preceded Wilbur and Orville in flight:

George Cayley (1773-1857) He was the father of aerodynamics.  His 1804 glider model incorporated most design elements of a modern airplane.

Alphonse Penaud (1850-1880) He build a rubber-band powered "planophore" model.  Its 131-foot flight was the first of an inherent stable aircraft.

Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896)  He was the first true glider pilot.  The Wrights were inspired to take up  his quest to get on "intimate terms with the wind."

Octave Chanute ( 1832-1910) He gathered and disseminated aeronautical knowledge.  He encouraged the 'wrights who used his biplane glider design.

The Bodie Lighthouse was beautifully kept.  Looked brand new.  The paint job must have just been done.
Not sure what I expected the area to look like, but to me it looked like so many beach towns that I have been too.  The length of it is almost 90 miles and we had 260 miles round trip to get there, so that could have been poor planning on our part.  I did enjoy what I saw, but not in the heat. Better to be seen in September or October.

I would have liked to see all the lighthouses and the town of Rodanthe since I am a Nicholas Sparks fan.

Maybe next time.

RC and I took a shorter version of the same outer banks excursion. Other than the Wright brothers museum we were rather unimpressed. The museum was well worth the trip. We were really shocked at how many homes have been built on that tiny strip of shifting dunes. Next time a hurricane wipes them all out they need to pass an ordinance prohibiting future building. Just doesn't make sense to build there.
