Day 344 - 4/9/14 - today we drove into downtown San Antonio and took a hop on hop off bus tour.  We first saw the Alamo. The word "alamo" means cottonwood, a type of tree. Your first thought is, "wow, look how small that is", it's quite amazing and they did a wonderful job to refurbish it and the surrounding grounds are quite beautiful.  The Alamo was first a Mission in 1718 named San Antonio De Valero.  It is was here that such notable names as David Crockett, Jim Bowie and Colonel Travis along with 186 other valiant men lost their lives fighting for Texas Independence.  The actual inside of the Alamo is a shrine to the memory of these brave fighters for freedom.

Our next stop was Mission Concepcion.  This is the oldest unrestored stone church in our Nation today.  It is quite large and you are free to go inside to the chapel and see what is left of the fresco drawings from the 1700's.  It is in this Mission where the Friars Christianized the Indians.

The Mission San Jose has had and is still undergoing restoration.  It is famous for the "Rose Window" where the Priests would come and open up the window and meet the partitioners. This Mission was praised for its unique church architecture an the rich fields and pastures that surrounded it.  It was often called, "Queen of the Missions".  The massive stone walls surrounding the mission were for protection and defense. Mission residents learned to use firearms to fend off Comanche and Apache raids.

It's been so great to see so many historical sites along the way, and we are not done yet!  Stay tuned...

Absolutely beautiful area. One place I've not been. Perhaps it belongs on the bucket list?!
