Day 194 - Today we took the drive from Ben and Nancy's (where we have been staying almost two weeks already) to Valley of Fire.  WOW, what an amazing place to see.  There was a wonderful drive to all the sites, and at each you could take a walk to be even closer to these amazing formations.  We saw the Petroglyphs on the rocks, petrified trees, Big Horned Sheep, and amazing colors and formations in these rocks!  Well worth the trip and only about 45 minutes out of Vegas.

History Lesson:  "Valley of Fire gets its name from the red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago.  Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape.

"Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates.  Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley."

"The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C.E. to 1150 C.E.  Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay.  Fine examples of rock art left by these peoples can be found at several sites within the park."

We are in the middle of arranging a trip next Fall to Vegas and Sedona. I am seeing these pictures as a preview (though we have been to Vegas a number of times in the past).
