Day 145 - Newport, OR - we are staying just over the bridge at a marina. Beautiful location. Today we went in search of two lighthouses in the area. One is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse (the shortest lighthouse in service from 18471-1874) and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse - still in service but not manned.
Newport is another town you could easily live in. The beach is gorgeous (although rough) and seems to stretch on forever. Rye Beach is the oldest neighborhood established in the 1800's. There are some great restaurants and shopping here, as well as a great little arts community. There is a US Coast Guard Station here and the harbor is quite busy. Highway 20 runs east through the Coast Range all the way to Boston at 3,365 miles and makes this the longest road in America!
Again the scenery along this coastline is breathtaking and we are so pleased that we have been able to experience it first hand.
Enjoy our trip along the coast so far - more to follow, of course. Off to Florence, OR next.
