Everywhere you looked you would see another glacier - there had to be another six on some of the other peaks, and many more hidden from view, but this Salmon Glacier was huge, and of course, you still don't see it all.
Enjoy the view!
Today we went up to the Salmon Glacier outside of Hyder, Alaska. We pass the bear viewing station and keep on driving until we hit this dirt road (oh NO, not this road again). Well I didn't realize this, but we travel on this road, in varying degrees of bad for 23 miles and the whole time we are climbing up and winding up and looking over the edge as we go up - did I mention UP? We get to about 3,600' (from sea level mind you). And, did I also mention that there is CONSTRUCTION on THIS road? OMG. When does it end. AND it's Sunday! Get a life people! It takes us just over an hour to get to the top of this area where we stop and look around at this breath-taking scene. The next day, some of the group goes on this trip and they continue another 20 miles to a different area for viewing the glacier from another angle. Given the road conditions I knew that Nick (not to mention the fear of heights) wouldn't even consider that one. I was happy with what we viewed. And, I heard the road got much narrower and very steep on the sides.
