Today was a beautiful day to take in some, well a lot, of the life and history of our 16th President - Abraham Lincoln!  You couldn't help but get chills all through your body at some of the things you saw, heard or witnessed in re-enactments.  It was mind blowing at times.  For such a humble man to be given such accolades is truly remarkable.  The Civil War and the Freeing of the Slaves was also heavily represented.

We saw the State Capitol building; the Old Capitol Building; Lincoln and Herndon Law Offices building; Lincoln's Home; Lincoln's Tomb; and the Presidential Library and Museum where we spent three and one half hours.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.  Unfortunately we were not able to take photos in the Library/Museum, but pretty much everywhere else was okay.

The other funny thing going on in Lincoln today was The Big Bat Ass 5K Run...the streets were blocked off and probably 1,000 runners took part!

Enjoy your photo history lesson of Springfield Illinois!

Tomorrow will be a travel day as we make our way to Independence, Missouri.

Nick and Sandy,

I don’t know if you remember that Dick and I lived in Belleville, Illinois (across the Mississippi River from St. Louis) in the early 70’s and we drove from Bellville to our hometowns of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City, Wisconsin many times. Every trip, I would say, “Let’s stop in Springfield to see all the Lincoln sites.” Of course, due to an old Piernot tradition of “making good time” on the road, we never stopped. One day I will return to see the sites. We are enjoying your blog. Hope you can make it to beautiful, sunny California on your trip. The smoke has just cleared from the very scary Spring Fire.”

I lived in Springfield for a few years -- a long LONG time ago. I should have told you to go to Norb Andy's for a horseshoe sandwich. It's a Springfield specialty and enough calories for at least two days!

I'm glad we're on this trip with you and we can do it without driving!
Happy Mother's Day!!!! Hugs.
