Day 12 - Donunts

I have been travelling since December 17th and I won't be back in Tottori until January 2nd. I am now in Akishima in Western Tokyo staying at my college's roommate home. It has been nice to see my old friends and visiting some new places but I kind of miss my place in Tottori. Of course, I will be travelling for a month in Thailand and other countries in January.
I have decided not to go to Vietnam as I had orginally planned as I couldn't fit it in my schedule. I met with my friend Tak the other day whom I will travel with in Thailand and made out plan. I will be going earlier then Tak and I will be staying for 3 days before taking the night bus to Phuket where I will meet Tak. After a couple of days there enjoying the sun and the water before heading over to Krabi for 2 or 3 days. Then we will take a night train to Bangkok and then fly to Chiang Mai in the north for a couple more days. Then Tak will head back to Japan and I will continue north into Laos and the old capitol of Luang Prabang. Then I will head south to Vientiane and cross back into Thailand and a brief stop in Bangkok before heading eat to Cambodia and visiting Ankor Wat. Then back to Bangkok and fly back to Japan.
Yesterday, I went to Shinjuku which is a place I like to go in Tokyo mainly because of the Kinokuniya bookstore which has the largest selection of English books in Japan. I usually buy about 10,000 yen of books and I almost walked out without buying anything but I couldn't do it (like going to movie theater and not buying popcorn) so I bought 2 travel guides for Laos and Cambodia. For lunch, I went to the Mexican restaurnt that I like and had tacos. One of the most popular shops in Shinjuku is the Krispy Kreme donunt shop which opened last year and quickly became super popular which lines of over a hour. I decided to give it a try and wait the hour to buy a box of donunts so I could be a good quest and bring my friends a nice omiyage. One nice thing about waiting is that they give out fresh hot donunts. Was it worth the wait? I loved them and my friends seemed to like them.
My friend whom I am staying with has a 4 year old daughter and the last time I saw her, she cried and said "kowai"-scary when she saw me. This time, she was fine with me but she is a little quiet. We played a card game trump and then a Japanese card game called Karuta in which Kuruta cards has Japanese characters written on them. A person will read a proverb written on a seperate card which features the sound of a Japanese character. The 2 players have to scan the cards and then grab the card featuring that character. It was me vs. the 4 year old girl, Manaka and I lost. I tried to win and I know my Hiragana but she had the home court advantage. I want a rematch. My friend always joked that they have a room especially for me. They built the house two years ago and it includes a room on the third floor which is supposed to be a "attic" for building code reason but they use it as a home theater and office. The room is very nice and airy with a sky light. I went to sleep listening to the rain on the roof just over my head.

I haven't tried Krispy Kreme Tokyo but have been to one in Seattle (by Quest Field). Maybe it's the Seahawks game going on at that time, but the place was very slow - there were the two of us, my friend and I, and maybe one family. We didn't get fresh hot donunts. :(
