... , we took a 90-minute drive north in a very comfortable car, got to check out the island in between, talked to a great guide who told us lots about Indonesia, and I personally felt like it was a pretty fortuitous mistake.  Of course, opinions varied.

Well, the only personal experience I have is the taxi ride I took across Batam from the ferry station to the airport... Looked seedy but not really explorable. If Lonely Planet is to be believed, Bintan is *much better*
