... Périgord region in Aquitaine (southwest) seems absolutely gorgeous ; I plan to go there in late September, it has lots and lots of nice small villages. You can Google some places like Saint-Émilion, Figeac, Sarlat-la-Canéda and Rocamadour, they look awesome.
