Takayama

Takayama

Takayama has preserved the feeling of a castle town, apparent by its history-filled streets. With the latticed bay windows and linked eaves of merchants' houses in Sanmachi Suji, the enduring historical temples and shrines of Higashiyama. Very cute country town. Took a walk in the woods, got lost (just as tourist information told us, if we didn't stick to the path!). We were all 'templed out' by the end of the day - then we actually stayed the night in a Hostel which was an old Temple. Had fo...

takayama allmighty!

well to get to takayama took longer then we thought and eventually we came here only at about 8pm we were really afraid we might have to sleep on the street but then we talked to monk that is responsible of the temple we are staying at and he said we could come and that it was no problem so we got out of the station got ourselves directions and looking around we realized the street was dark and barely anything was opened! we got to the temple and got our room i must say it was so cold! i knew...

Wot No Hida Beef?

First place after the countrys capital is Takayama in the ancient, mountainous Hida district. Near the Japanese Alps it has old inns, saki breweries and is chock full of museums. The city dates back to theKanamori period of the late 16th Century. For a city, Takayama is pretty quiet. Maybe it is just off-season; staying at my hostel are two Australian girls, and thats it. Not that there isnt anything to do here - there is loads! I arrived at 5pm last night, too late to do much in town. Instea...

Takayama: Spring Festival Halved

So karma really is a *****. I arrived in Takayama to great weather--sunny, warm. The town or rather small city is a bit bland around the station but it's got some nice mountains and a renown old district. Since I got in around noon, thought I'd take it easy and see the folk village (Hida no Sato), which is basically a historical park of old farmhouses from centuries ago. They were moved here to preserve them from being flooded when all these hydroelectric dams were erected. Judging by the pic...

Mountain living, onsens and legedary Hida beef!

... tub in an enclosed space outside and proceeded to soak in that on my own for a good 20 mins (i believe the term i would use to describe my complexion after that was beetroot!).

Post soak and it was time for dinner at a local eatery which was kind enough to introduce us to a local delicacy of the region- Hida beef. While quite fatty, this beef is quite lean on the outside with most of the fat content coming from the multiple, fine marbled lines that run through it ...
