Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang, China

I went for a short weekend away to a small island off the coast of Beihai, Guangxi. The island is sorta nice. The people are friendly but everything is quite expensive. Plus, the beaches aren't the greatest. I did enjoy the tide pools near the Volcanic Park (火山口公园）and Colorful Beach (东安村). The weather was a bit hit or miss. Friday wasn't bad but it rained most of Saturday morning. However, Sunday morning was absolutely gorgeous. There is a new fast ferry which runs to the new ferry pier on the island in the morning. The trip takes about an hour on the fast ferry. A ferry returns to Beihai at 9:45 am. and at 3:00 pm.

Tianshui, Gansu, China

I spent 1 night in Tianshui, Gansu, which was more then enough time. The people of the city had to be some of the rudest I've meet in China. The amount of staring, pointing and laughing was ridiculous. Felt like I was the whole city had never seen a foreigner before. There isn't much to visit in the city, I went to Fu Xi Temple （伏羲）, which has some interesting paintings and architecture.

Tongren, Qinghai, China

After not being allowed to go to Xiahe, Gansu, I chose to spend a night in the nearly empty monastery town of Tongren. I can imagine it would be wonderful place when the monastery is full of Tibetans. There were a few pilgrims around Rongwo Gonchen Gompa but I only met one actual Tibetan Monk who seemed happy to see a foreigner but clearly couldn't talk to me for very long.

I spent the lunar new year (春节) in Xining. It is a pleasant medium sized city with few sites of interest. However, Xining does have a unique atmosphere with people of many different cultures.

Jiayuguan, Gansu, China

A quick stop in Jiayugaun (嘉峪关) to see the end of the Great Wall. Driving through the area you can still see the original wall. But the Jiayuguan Fort (嘉峪关城楼), 61 yuan entrance fee, has been rebuilt. Jiayuguan isn't anything special, but if your interested in following the silk road it makes a pleasant stop.

A couple day stop over in the desert town of Dunhuang， Gansu Province (甘肃， 敦煌）. A couple sites of interest here include the incredible Mogao Caves (莫高窟）and the desert sand dunes.
