Nice, France

We left Valbonne yesterday and headed down to Cannes, which is only 8 miles away. It just took a bit because of traffic. The day was perfect, no clouds, sunny and we were right on the water. We walked down the strand a bit and checked out the beaches. As you know, in the south of France tops on women are optional. Well, let's just say my hopes of seeing a team of big boobed women playing beach volleyball with their tops off was quickly dashed. All the women that you would want to have their tops off don't and even worse all the women you do NOT want to see with their tops off are topless. Let's just say I saw enough grandma tits to last a lifetime.

I drop my car off today - I'll be sad to see it go. It's going to be a long 6 week wait.
Valbonne, France

We made from St. Tropez to Valbonne on Tuesday and are leaving Valbonne today. The hotel has internet, but it's not very good, so this will be a text only post with the photos to follow later.

Valbonne is a nice little town with a ton of small restaurants in the alley ways. Very quaint and it isn't far from bigger surrounding cities. It has a really nice town square that we've been sitting around and doing some people watching. On the day we arrived I was sooooo tired from not sleeping well the night before in St. Tropez - the room smelled like rotten eggs. Anyway, so when we arrived I didn't feel like doing much. The weather was overcast so we decided to make the day a "lazy Sunday" day. I took a couple hour nap then we woke up and walked down and had a couple beers, then dinner and that was pretty much it. The town is super small, you could walk the entire town in 20 minutes easy. Yesterday, however, was a busy day. We got up and hoped in the car towards the French Grand Canyon.

The best thing about the French Grand Canyon is the fact that it wasn't "discovered" until 1905. Seriously, how the largest canyon/whole in the ground for all of Europe go undiscovered says volumes about the French's lack of interest in nature. According to many of the guide books, they are actively working on becoming more nature friendly. Even after it was discovered their initial plan was to damn it and flood it. This didn't happen, not because of enviromental concerns, but because it was going to cost so much! haha. Anyway, we made the 40 mile drive which took a little over 2 hours because of the winding roads. I was loving the drive - zipping around corners on a tight mountain road. Lots of fun!! We got some good pictures too, I'll post those later.

Today we are off towards Nice with a stopover in Cannes for a few hours. Then on Friday I drop off the car!
St. Tropez, France

We made it to St. Tropez yesterday, down from Avignon. The drive was really nice and the closer you get to the water the more everything looks like Southern California. We pulled into the swanky town of St. Tropez only to find the entire city was a traffic jam of cars/motorcycles and people. I was, of course, following my trusty navigation system but let me tell you something, I thought for sure it was sending me down sidewalks. Had I not seen other cars ahead of me there is no way I would've turned down these "streets." See the photo above and note the arrow on the nav system...haha.

St. Tropez is a tourist town for the rich and famous. Huge yachts and fancy people and cars. It's almost exactly like taking Bevery Hills and Venice Beach and smashing the two together. There's the dirty streets, but instead of hippie clothes you have Louis Veton shops. Today we head out to a small town outside of Grasse and not far from Nice called Valbonne. From there we'll see Cannes and the French Grand Canyon!
Avignon, France

This post is a 'post-visit' entry since we didn't have internet access at Le Ferme, that's "the farm" fer you non France speak'n folk. The hotel was nice, very quiet with great meals. We used this as a home base for 3 nights as we visited many of the outer cities. These include, but aren't limited to Roussillon, Gorde and Abbaye de Senanque. We also took a tour of some regional (Provence region) wineries. This was on a tour bus (VW vanagon actually) so as to not mix wine tasting and driving of the new car. We also spent some time in Avignon's city center which was very nice. Lots of shopping possibilities. I say possibilities because when we actually decided to do some shopping it was on a Sunday and literally everything was boarded up....d'oh.

Enjoy the photos!
Lucerne, Switzerland

Today was a quiet day in Lucerne. We slept in big time, which was nice, but that meant we missed the breakfast at the hotel. It also meant I didn't get a cup of coffee until late in the day. By this time, it was too late. I had two cups of coffee yet I'm still dragging.

We went to the Picasso museum here in Lucerne. The museum has some artwork, but is really a bunch of photos taken by Daniel Duncan of Picasso and family members - e.g. Lump, Picasso's wiener dog. It was very quiet there although we did have a little excitement getting our tickets. They didn't take credit cards - the best way to avoid having to carry local currency - so we had to bust out the Euros. This guy and some old cash register really started having some trouble. He couldn't do the math right and it seriously took like 10 minutes to buy an 8 dollar ticket. At one point he couldn't get the register to open up and was calling all sorts of people. He even busted out the manual. Eventually he figured it out. I felt bad for him, but at the same time it's a museum with a big board that says "Credit Cards Not Accepted, Euros accepted."

After Carrie did some work, we hopped in the car and drove around the lake, see pictures. Amazing scenery as some of the clouds broke. I decided to be bold and drive back WITHOUT using the navigation system...boy did I learn my lesson. After many wrong turns, one going into a bus station (ya know, only where the buses go) and another of turning onto a sidewalk next to a one-way street, I quickly repented and typed in our hotel and was immediately directed home...whew...

Tomorrow will be an early day and a big day of driving. We're going to one of Carrie's company's factories in SZ, then heading to France. Internet may get spotty again.
I'm becoming more comfortable with driving over here. Everyone's a really good driver. On the way we went through a lot of tunnels and upon emerging from one of them we were greated with a snow storm. We were about 4500 ft up and somewhere in Austria. It was definitely a surprise. It didn't last long and after another tunnel it turned to rain again. As we got close to Lucerne, we noticed that we weren't too far from home....San Bernadino that is.

It's very rainy today. We're going to head down to the town and check out some stuff, hopefully we'll stay dry.
