Just so you know we had a lot of fun at the Heineken Brewery, here are a couple videos we recorded while we were there.We also wanted to each take a paragraph and pass on our feelings about least and most favorite things about the trip, including tips for future travelers:Keith:<i>"I didn't have a least favorite city, I enjoyed every city and the history behind them were so cool!! My favorite city was Amsterdam because the government respects the fact that people are human and are gonna do as they wish so why not put clean healthy laws on it and make a lil revenue while they're at it!! My favorite hostel was in Amsterdam even tho it was kinda a hotel and my least fave was Belgium...favorite food was the Indian food in Amsterdam but close second was all the schnitzel, especially in Heidelburg!! The Heineken experience was a blast!! And never start a car while in first without the clutch in...u could run over your family!!"Shelby:<i>"I really enjoyed Vienna, though I don't really have a favorite. I'd need to visit Salzburg and Munich again to have a better opinion. I liked the hostel most in Heidelberg (actually part of a pub so it was like a real gasthaus! plus good food and nice people), and none of the hostels were too bad. The worst part about any of the cities was the amount of tourists, but I guess I can't complain since I was one of them. Black Light theatre was nifty. MMMmmmm schnitzel. and lots of pastries and coffee and chocolate. Amsterdam was nifty but not as wild as people in the states make it out to be. and I personally would've gone to more museums, but that's alright. Tips for travellers: it's extremely difficult traveling in a group of five with such varying interests. Just remember to keep an open mind and if &nbsp;people totally disregard what you planned, then to hell with them--just go do it anyway and leave them to flounder. Just kidding! Be nice to your family and just encourage them politely to keep times in mind. Otherwise you'll just barely miss things, like what happened to us so often. Cough cough. Wink wink. Thumbs up!"Mike:<i>It was a tie for me between Prague, Heidelberg, Brugge and Cambridge.&nbsp; The beautiful architecture in these cities, along with the fun outdoor cafes made for such an enjoyable and memorable experience.&nbsp; I'd have to say, I liked Amsterdam the least (with the exception of the really fun time we had at Heineken).&nbsp; It was just kind of dirty and the oriental people at the hostel didn't speak much English (or French or Dutch or German).&nbsp; The leaning buildings along the canals were cute, though.&nbsp; All the hostels were much more enjoyable than I expected.&nbsp; I liked the one in Vienna the best.&nbsp; In my opinion it had the best overall sleeping and bathroom arrangements and the common area/bar seemed the most comfortable.&nbsp; The hostel in Brugge was the worst...sharing a room with 14 other people who were all coughing and snoring wasn't much fun.&nbsp; And the shower room was barely usable.&nbsp; We did want to pass along that most everywhere you went out into the cites, public toilets cost a coin or two.&nbsp; But it was well worth it as all the public toilets were very clean.&nbsp; My most memorable experience <i>(must be because I keep telling everybody about it) was driving 102 mph on the autobahn.&nbsp; I was in the middle lane <i>and everybody was going that speed while the right lane was an assembly line of truckers going 65 mph (because that's the most they can go and by law must be in the right lane - something the US should require) while the left (speed) lane saw one car after another, including family minivans, doing 120-130mph...wheeeeee!&nbsp; Tips:&nbsp; Remember to take your 26-year old son with you so he can constantly remind you to put the car in fifth gear (hey, I haven't driven a straight-drive in 30 years...and yeah, I did start it up a couple times in gear without my foot on the clutch...oops!)&nbsp; Also, try the hostels in Europe, they're really not that bad and if you think your kids might be staying in them someday, it'll give you a peace of mind.&nbsp; <i>And the food?&nbsp; Well, if you know me you know I loved it all!Maggie:<i>"The trip was such a whirlwind! But here are some of my thoughts.Favorite country: Austria because the countryside was just beautiful, the cities we visited were clean, people were friendly.&nbsp; The countryside especially around Rottenmann was absolutely gorgeous. Favorite castle (although we didn't get to go into it because of time contraints): Saltzberg. All the cities except for Prague had dual flushers!All in all it was a great trip.&nbsp; A family of five (all A type personalities) survived 14 days with each other and could still say it was a trip of a lifetime!"Grandma:<i>"First of all I enjoyed every city and country we were in.&nbsp; In Munich the viktualienmarkt was a sensual revelation-a real culinary seduction.&nbsp; Salzburg-Mozart and the fact this city was nestled in the mountains-it was so incredible. The German Pharmacy Museum in Heidelberg (at the old castle) -the beautiful faience earthen ware and apothercary jars-I love my handmade blueberry soap-I loved strolling at the world famous castle where writers, poets and thinkers have strolled along the Philosophers walk and enjoyed the view of town...AH! Romantic Heidelberg. Such a passion and zest for life. In Vienna, at the State Opera House - the Mayerling Ballet-I loved act 2-a scene set in a seedy club-the feathered plume hat wearing can-can girls with their lacy pantaloons and trampish ways-it is fun to see ballerinas play the part of a tart. What more could I ask for but to see wonderful ballet dancers tell the story of the tragic love affair between the mentally ill crown Prince Rudolf and his 17 year old mistress, while Michael And Maggie danced behind us and Keith snored and slept on the velvet chaise. Of course I loved it-all of this set to a score by my favorite Franz Liszt-I SCREAM BRAVO! Prague is time's magpie surviving the bombs and the burnings-the beautiful mosaic sidewalks which led to beautiful barogue and Renaissance houses and gothic towers-Prague has stockpiled ten centuries of history.Then you see the graffiti-spray paint spreading across beautiful old buildings-freed from the communist hold the entire city seems to be wrapped in graffiti mold. In spite of this I loved the beauty of Prague's youth actually the European youth-what beautiful sculpted creatures-long supple limbs-they sip slow drinks in cafes and spill into the streets wearing their American jeans-oh my god the vibrant youth.&nbsp; I wish we could have seen the cathederal that took 600 years to build but the Pope took priority. In Amsterdam I loved the Red Light DISTRICT IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PART OF TOWN WITH NARROW BRICK HOUSES DATING BACK TO&nbsp; THE1600S and I loved the emerging fashion designers studios next to the prostitutes-the designers can live and work in the spaces rent free for one year. What a deal-I love turning this neighborhood of the world's oldest profession into a fashion hot-spot. The Van Gogh Museum-the public elephant art project over 100 hundred elephants to be auctioned off to benefit elephants in Asia.The Sacher Torte-schnitzel-cordon blu-fish and chips-beer-the incredible coffee everywhere. Oh MY GOD! I loved Brugge and the mystery of the Basilica of the HOLY BLOOD.&nbsp; I loved the reliquary and the beautiful oil paintings of the stations of the cross and of course the chocolate-chocolate-chocolate. I always wondered what it would be like to stay in hostels and for the most part I enjoyed it. I appreciate all the hard work Shelby put into this trip and for being kind enough to invite me. I think some of us might want to read The Ugly American maybe all of us should. Saturday morning Shelby joined us for breakfast at the B&amp;B in Cambridge, then we took her shopping for dorm room items.On the way, Grandma had a blast at a local arts and crafts fair.&nbsp; Also on the way, we found Shelby a used bike.&nbsp; Then we hit the department and drug stores for towels, etc...Lunch was delicious, fish and chips and steak and ale pies and dark beer at The Eagle.Then Shelby gave us a tour of her college at Cambridge: Trinity College.&nbsp; The buildings are just beautiful.&nbsp; The chapel had statues of some of Trinity's distinguished alums.Isaac Newton, Francis Bacon, Tennyson, and Byron are just a few of the famous Trinity College students.&nbsp; You can learn more at:&nbsp; http://www.trin.cam.ac.uk/index.php?pageid=2.Then we posed for a few pictures with our favorite Trinity student and said our (sob) goodbyes...We then took the train back to London to see a few sights before catching the train to the Gatwick airport where our plane would be flying us back home Sunday morning.We'll post some final comments in a few days...Whew, what a trip!

We made it to the ferry on time and headed across the English Channel.The reason we chose the ferry instead of the Chunnel was so we could see the white cliffs of Dover. &nbsp;And they didn't disappoint!Another reason was that the cost was a fraction of going through the Chunnel.&nbsp;From Dover we took the train to London, hopped on the subway over to another train which carried us non-stop to Cambridge.&nbsp;Here we met the AHT (remember them) director of sales for the UK to discuss selling our ice cream carts here. &nbsp;We had a great discussion with him at the Royal Cambridge Hotel over a cold Guiness and creamed tea. &nbsp;I had the Guinness, Maggie had the tea. Creamed tea means they bring you scones and clotted cream with jam to eat with your tea. &nbsp;I tried one, too. Delicious. &nbsp;Over the next few weeks we are going to continue our discussions but it looks good for Magnolia Carts to finally expand overseas.&nbsp;A taxi then took us all to our bed and breakfast (no more hostels), where we checked in and then trekked to the college to see Shelby's room. &nbsp;(She and Grandma had checked her in while we were meeting the AHT guy.)&nbsp;Shelby's dorm room has to be the nicest dorm room we have ever seen for a first-year (the term is "Fresher" over here) college student. &nbsp;Bed, sofa, sink, fireplace (with built-in space heater), and lots of bookcases. &nbsp;And she doesn't have a roommate!&nbsp;And the grounds at her college, Trinity College, are just amazing.&nbsp;The old town where the college is located is full of old world beauty and charm.&nbsp;Tomorrow we say our goodbyes to her and head to London to our hotel for the night so we can get on our plane bright and early Sunday morning...see you all soon!&nbsp;

Ever since we saw the Colin Ferrell-Ralph Fiennes movie: "In Bruges", we thought it would be a cool place to visit. &nbsp;And since we were going to be nearby on this trip anyway, we thought why not now?Brugge (the way they spell it here) is a charming Flemish village in the Flanders section of Belgium.While we were here we learned that the Belgium actually introduced "French" fries, not the French. &nbsp;In Bruge, they actually have a "Fries" museum. &nbsp;Every restaurant sells fries as a separate menu item. &nbsp;And they prefer to serve them with mayonnaise, not ketchup. &nbsp;Very delicious.Shelby and Mike climbed the clock tower in the main plaza and we all did lots and lots of walking, shopping, and eating.Of course Belgium is famous for their chocolates and there were plenty of beautiful chocoloate shops.We also saw the Basilica of the Holy Blood. &nbsp;In the 1300's a vial came to Brugge that is supposed to contain the blood of Jesus. &nbsp;Every day they bring it out for people to see it change from a solid to a liquid during an hour of the afternoon. &nbsp;Today it was between 2 and 3pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;Scientists say it does that because of the afternoon temperature change.Our lodgings for this evening were in a large dorm room at the Snuffle Hostel. &nbsp;We have to say it was by far our least favorite as we were crammed in with 10 others, mostly 18-25 year-olds who like to stay up all night. The bath and shower arrangements were also the least liked of those we had on this trip. &nbsp;If we were to rate all the hostels, the one in Vienna was the best.Tomorrow, we catch the ferry at Calais, France and head to the white cliffs of Dover where we will pick up the train to Cambridge.

Well, Amsterdam is a rather large city so we weren't able to see everything in one day, but we did see a lot.After the Veteran Hostel served us a delicious breakfast, we headed out to one of the local flea markets.Next stop was the Van Gogh Museum. &nbsp;A very prolific yet sad artist from Holland who shot himself dead at age 37. &nbsp;It was very interesting to read about him and see his actual work.&nbsp;For lunch we stopped at a pancake house and had the traditional Dutch pancakes. &nbsp;Very delicious.Throughout Amsterdam we saw thousands of bicyclers. &nbsp;It is becoming known as the city of bikes. &nbsp;Every street has dedicated bike lanes that scooters and mini-mini cars can also use.And if you didn't know, smoking marijuana is legal in Amsterdam. &nbsp;You can purchase it at the establishments labeled "Coffee Shop". &nbsp;You buy coffee at a cafe.All over the city are over 100 art elephants done by various artists that are going to be auctioned off soon to raise money for a "save the Asian elephants" fund.After lunch we hopped on board the Blue Boat for a 75 minute canal cruise.&nbsp;Along the way we saw the narrowest house in Amsterdam (5 yards wide) and many other sites including houses that tilted to one side or the other due to settling.&nbsp;Amsterdam is a city like New Orleans, built below sea level with an extensive canal system for drainage.&nbsp;Because early residents were taxed on the width of their houses, they started shrinking them to avoid taxes. &nbsp;This also caused them to shrink their staircases into very tiny narrow ones as shown by the staircase in our hostel. &nbsp;Because of the narrow staircases, hooks were installed at the outside top front of the buildings to allow them to move furniture up to the higher floors via a rope and pulley.&nbsp;After the boat ride we decided to tour the Heineken Brewery. &nbsp;The best brewery tour we have ever taken. &nbsp;We would highly recommend visiting it if you can (or just read about it at heineken.com).&nbsp;Everybody was in the mood for Indian food for supper and so on our way to the Red Light District we stopped and ate...delicious!&nbsp;The Red Light District was interesting but much tamer than we expected. &nbsp;Every so often there were girls in lingerie posing in first or second floor windows and very infrequently did we see a customer entering or leaving one of their establishments.&nbsp;Tomorrow, it's on to Brugge, Belgium, a town we became familiar with through the very good and highly recommended Colin Ferrell movie: "In Bruges"...&nbsp;

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at a delightful bakery/cafe in the old town (Aldstat) of Heidelberg, we walked through the narrow streets up to the old castle (schloss).The castle (and the walk) were very cool, as the pictures show.The castle is also home to the largest beer barrel we've ever seen.&nbsp;We then trekked back to the village, shopped some more, took some pictures, checked out of our hostel and hit the road for Amsterdam.&nbsp;The four hour ride through the German and Dutch countryside was very enjoyable but tense at times as this was our first REAL autobahn experience. &nbsp;We drove 90 to 100 mph most of the time and that was the middle lane.&nbsp;The right lane is where all the big trucks are required to be and the far left lane is where the 100+ mph drivers are. &nbsp;It was quite a humbling experience to be cruising along at 100mph and see a minivan whiz past you at 130mph. &nbsp;Yeehaw!It was also very nice to see all the big trucks always staying in one lane out of everybody's way.&nbsp;We arrived outside Amsterdam and parked at a Park and Ride, which was recommended because parking in Amsterdam is supposedly nearly impossible and very expensive.&nbsp;&nbsp;We hopped on the subway and arrived at our hostel around 8:30pm, ate at a cute little Dutch restaurant, then called it a night.Tomorrow, we hope to hit a few museums, take a canal ride, and tour the red light district...&nbsp;

After a four hour bus ride, on a really nice doubledecker bus, we arrived in Nuremburg, Germany.There we rented a Volkswagen Golf station wagon and drove two hours to Heidelberg.The hostel we are staying at was once a brewery and the lobby isnow a really cool bar/restaurant. &nbsp;Over the bar is the old copper top that used to be over a giant brew kettle.&nbsp;After a delicious schnitzel dinner at the Sudpfannen Hostel Restaurant, we strolled around the village and snapped photos.Tomorrow we will tour the old castle and then drive four hours to our next stop, Amsterdam,&nbsp;

Our last day in Prague began with a delicious breakfast at a french bakery right around the corner from our hostel.&nbsp; We then trekked to the Prague Castle and visited the St. George Basilica, the Golden Lane (a row of shops) and the Picture Gallery (late renaissance art gallery).&nbsp;&nbsp;Afterward, half of the castle district was closed off because,&nbsp;unbeknownst&nbsp;to us, the pope was coming for a visit that evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;So we left, got a little lost trying to get around all the newly set-up pope fences, and made our way back to the old town to see the Staronova synagogue (built in the 13th century!).&nbsp;&nbsp;Then we saw a wonderfully imaginative and hilarious Black Light Theatre show, a theatrical style invented by the Czechs that involves pantomine and black light modern dance.A late night dinner and some more pix of the castle at night and then to bed.Off to Heidelberg, Germany in the morning...

Prague, Bohemia, Czech Republic

After running down to the Nasch Markt early this morning to get some pastries and fruit for the train ride to Prague, we took the tram to the train station and off we went.It was a four hour ride to Prague, known inside the Czech Republic as Praha. &nbsp;The Czech Republic itself was known as Bohemia for many centuries,So here we are in Bohemia with our Bohemian daughter and her Bohemian grandmother.It is a beautiful city. &nbsp;Much more so than we expected.After checking in at our hostel, Shelby took us on a walking tour through narrow cobblestone streets and wide open plazas. &nbsp;We went up into the tower at the 700 year-old town hall and the views of the old city were awesome.One of the most amazing sites is that all the sidewalks are laid out in mosaic patterns with old, small stone tiles.Needing some refreshments, we stopped at the cafe in the House of the Black Madonna, well known for its cubist architecture.&nbsp;We made it to the Charles Bridge at dusk and after checking out the many street artists, we made our way to dinner at a restaurant Shelby said came recommended for their fish dinners. &nbsp;And they were right, the fish was delicious.Tomorrow we are touring the castle district...

We saw the St. Stephen's Cathedral, the museum quarter, and the famous Sacher Cafe, the home of the original Sacher Torte.We also visited the famous Demel chocolate shoppe and the amazing Nasch Markt, where there were seemingly endless rows of food vendors and cafes.Today we ate some delicious bratwurst with mustard and sauerkraut, goulash soup, pastries, chocolates, and consumed our share of Austrian beer. &nbsp;At night we went to the opera house and saw the Mayerling Ballet. &nbsp;One thing we learned is beware of ordering opera tickets online for a foreign city. &nbsp;We didn't realize our seats were in the top balcony right next to the stage. &nbsp;Two of the seats could see a little but the other three could see nothing. &nbsp;We finally exchanged them after the second act for standing room only spots so we could at least see the last act. &nbsp;We should have guessed something was up when the tickets were only eight Euros each and the next cheapest tickets were 27 Euros.What we did see was awesome and the Franz Liszt music from the orchestra was beautiful...by itself worth the eight Euros.Tomorrow morning, we're on the train to Prague...
