Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States

My work takes me all around the world, on occasion I am able to grab an assignment inside the U.S. When I was told about the assignment coming up in Milwaukee I wasn't to excited. I have never been to Milwaukee and really didn't know to much about the city. My whole preception was base on the sitcoms "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley". So, you now see how much I really knew about Milwaukee. I arrived in Milwaukee on September 5th, flying into General Mitchell International Airport. The airport was very up to date modern airport and very easy to get around. I picked up my luggage and grabbed a cab. I was greeted by a friendly cabbie a gentleman from Afganistan. I was told the cab ride to downtown Milwaukee would be around 20 minutes. My cabbie got me there in less than 15 minutes, this guy should enter the Indy 500. I checked in at the Courtyard by Marriott Milwaukee Downtown. Nice place located right next to what I think was a river, maybe some kind of a canal. I had a nice spacious room over looking the river. The room was equipped with full kitchen and a very nice LG Flatscreen TV. My assignment was long term as I would be in Milwaukee for 2 months or more. I got settled in and headed down to the front desk to pick the minds of the locals. When you travel for a living relying on local knowledge works best and always seems to produce great experiences. Once the front desk knows your staying longterm they seem to open up because they know that they are going to be seeing alot of you. I quickly made friends with the frontdesk and asked them to prepare me a list of their personal favorite places to eat and things they like to do or visit when they are not working. Some of the places that were recommend and I visited were: Three Brothers Resaurant, Harley Davidson Museum, Usinger's Sausage Factory, The Safe House, Lakefront Brewery, Milwaukee Brewers (Miller Stadium) De Marinis Italian Reastaurant, Farmers Market, Riptide Restaurant. There are many things to do and tons of great sites too see in Milwaukee. Three Brothers Restaurant was a great experience, old world Serbian restaurant. I took a peek in the kitchen and every meal was being prepared from scratch. This by far was my best meal I had during my stay in town. I don't own a Harley Davidson, but taking the tour of the museum was great and filled with historical interactive fun. If your in Milwaukee you have to partake in drinking beer and eating cheese and sausage. Stopping at Unsinger's Sausage Factory is a must. This factory has been serving up sausage's for over 100 years and is well worth a visit. The Safe house is another place you can't leave Milwaukee without visiting. Its off the beatin path and no signs to draw you in. Finding this place is not difficult, but you need to get directions prior to heading out. Its set back off the main street down an alley with no visable markings idenifying it self as the Safe House. If your an International Spy this is the place for you. The Safe House is a restaurant and bar with a "Spy" underworld theme...its great. If you happen to be in town during baseball season you have got to take in a Brewer's game. Miller park is an easy drive located just a few minutes from downtown. Grab a few beers and sausages and enjoy the game. If you like pizza you have got to make a stop at De Marinis Italtian Restaurant. Just over the downtown bridge heading South located in a old itlalian neighborhood. The atmosphere is old school and very down to earth local crowd. If your taste buds are craving seafood head over to Riptides Seafood Restaurant. They run daily special with a Thursday Night 1 lb lobster or all you can eat shrimp with a pitcher of beer for $16 bucks. For dessert try the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake...its delicious. I found Milwaukee a great place to visit with many things to see and do. Just make sure you hit up the local folks to find the best places. Oh, before you depart the city make sure you stop off at the Farmers market. You will need to grab a bite to eat and load up on the fabulous cheese's they have to offer. Milwaukee is a great place I know you will have a great time. Best regards, Travelbopper.
