Temixco, Morelos, Mexico

Today I woke up in some kind of foul mood. I was grumpy, complainy, and absolutely no fun to be around. Of course I tried to hide it, but by the time we arrived in Taxco, and the locals began their hustling and the taxis almost hit me like 10 times, I couldn't hold it back any more and I let all go over a cup of coffee with Aislynn. After a little heart to heart I started to enjoy myself a lot more, and I began to have a blast.                Taxco is a nice little town  built on a mountain that caters mostly to tourists due to its local silver mines. The moment you step out of your car you are hounded by some local trying to get you to go into his silver shop. There is so much silver in the town, that it almost makes you think that it is a precious metal that anyone can afford. At any rate, the jewelry there is beautiful, as is the cathedral in the center of the city. It's definitely worth a day of your time if you are ever in the area, if not just to see all the different things made of silver. I bought my sombrero in Taxco, because t was just what I was looking for to make "the magic" happen.  We spent about two to three hours there shopping and eating and just enjoying the center of the city. After the two hour drive back to Temixco we decided to take a swim in the pool, and it was short lived as a storm moved in, at which point we decided to hang out on the porch drinking a beer and watching it rain. Also, short lived, as I was promptly frightened inside due to some pretty extreme lightning and thunder. Yes, I am afraid of lightning and thunder. As beautiful as it is and as relaxing as it can be at night I am still terrified of it if it gets to close. I think that it's probably a control issue, because I have no control over it, it scares me. The day was pretty lazy all in all, and later in the evening we headed in to Cuernavaca to go see a movie. We ended up seeing 21, because it was the only movie that was completely in English. I mean my Spanish isn't bad, as a matter of fact it's pretty dang good, but I didn't want to have to focus that hard throughout a movie. It ended up being pretty good, and I am now ready to go hit up Vegas. I know this entry was lame, but I'm tired so check out my pics. Tomorrow is our last full day in Mexico, (Tear), and it should be nice and relaxing again. Vacation definitely beats the heck out of third year of med school, that's a fact!

On the drive to Temixco from Mexico City, Italo decided that it was the appropriate time to share some of his Mexican jokes with me, so in turn I have decided to share them with you. (Disclaimer: These jokes were told by a Mexican and therefore are in no circumstance racist, bigoted, or thereby related to any other synonym of the sort!)

They both get laid by a Mexican at some point in their life.                Yikes! So yeah! That's what I learned today. For the most part today was a lazy day. We didn't have anything special planned, except for heading to Tito and Manina's vacation home in Temixco. It was about a two hour drive from Mexico City through the mountains, and on the way I got to hone my GPS skills a little more. I'm getting pretty good with that little thing. Italo likes it as well, so I think Aislynn probably has his next Christmas present picked out in her head already. If you are curious, and I know you are, the highest altitude reached on the toll road from Mexico City to Temixco is 9970 feet. I thought I'd share that just in case... well, just in case...I dunno, just wanted to share it I guess. The weekend home in Temixco is a beautiful, quaint place that seems to be stuck in a time where things moved a little slower and where people cared about the appearance of their property. It's one house among 7 to 8 that share a backyard. There is a nice large pool and party patio for those who come to visit to share some good memories together. According to Aislynn, about 50 years ago her grandparents and a few other families in their neighborhood in Mexico City all purchased this plot of land  together, and built the property up to what it is. You'll get a better feel for it in my pictures, but it is literally a little paradise inside of a typical Mexican City. I spent most of the afternoon enjoying the weather, reading the Baburnama and a Travel Magazine, and listening to some Bob Marley on the porch of their casa. Later in the day we headed into Cuernavaca, where we did a little shopping and I used the internet to catch up on some emails. Italo, Aislynn, and myself ended our day sitting out by the dirty algae-ridden pool drinking beers, as I smoked a cigar (a La Gloria Cubana Sabrosa), just chatting and watching the lightning light up the night sky giving shape to some of the vegetation that had disappeared with the sun much earlier in the night. Sometimes getting to experience the things that I forget to do at home is what really ends up being the things that become the most memorable parts of my vacations. You have to savor those moments in life before they pass you by forever.

We were off the tarmac in San Antonio by 1300, thank God, as I have been starting to feel like that city is sucking the life out of me. Finally off, for a well deserved (at least in my eyes) vacation to Mexico City with Aislynn, where we have been planning to visit her extended family and do some sightseeing as well. The flight was uneventful, except for the free alcoholic beverages, which one almost feels obligated to take advantage of in these days of not so cheap travel abroad, and on our arrival we promptly hopped in a cab and headed to Coyocan where we would be staying with Aislynn's grandparents. Much to my surprise the weather was much nicer than I expected. Apparently it's the rainy season, and it's sunny in the mornings and rains in the afternoons, so the weather is nice and cool, and the rain keeps the air breathable for those of us whose lungs aren't accustomed to the smog knock life. We were greeted in the driveway by Aislynn's uncle (Gonzalo), father (Italo), and cousin (Eric). We were ushered in and I was given a quick tour, handed a coke followed by a beer not long after and re-introduced to Aislynn's grandma (Manina) and a little later her grandfather (Tito). After enjoying some barbacoa, complements of Gonzalo, I decided to start my vacation off right with a little siesta.                 One must always take note of the things in a country that really stand out to him/her, por ejemplo, one who visits Paris and doesn't see graffiti probably didn't actually visit Paris, France, but possibly Paris, Texas.  So my list for Mexico City is going to have to start with highway on ramps. These suckers are more like sharp left turns into oncoming traffic. Exhilarating, Yes! Conducive with an average life span of 78 years, not so much! On another note, who would have thought that there could be more Starbuck's coffee houses in a single square mile in Mexico City than any other place on earth? At one point driving down the road I could see three separate Starbuck's from my window within 30 seconds. It catches you off guard too, because you are just watching the shops roll by Taqueria, Farmacia, another Farmacia, and then wham... a Starbuck's.  Maybe tomorrow I'll do a Starbuck's count.                 So, after my siesta we headed out to the center of Coyocan to do a little market hopping and see la Iglesia de San Jaun Bautista, where Aislynn was baptized. The whole area was under construction unfortunately and we didn't really get to enjoy the beautiful parks surrounding the church. On top of that, about 15 minutes into our little mosey around the neighborhood it began to rain. Yeah, I love rain, except when I don't have an umbrella, or poncho, or well anything for that matter. Blah, blah, blah. We had dinner, drove to her uncle's house, had some great coffee, and drove back home where I find myself now writing to...hmmm...myself.                 Its time for that special category...yep, you guessed it... Special made-up Spanish phrases of the day. Today's phrases include: 1. Ahorra puede poner su mente por la cama (Now you can put your mind in the bed), I was actually trying to say, "Now you can put your mind to rest".  2. Ace-all-een-a (Aislynna) es muy carro esos dias ( Aislynn is very expensive these days), however this was meant to be a play on words, as adding the a to the end of her name and saying it the way I have so conveniently syllabalized it for you, thus the reference goes hand in hand with the word gasoline.  I hope that wasn't completely wasted on you my friends, because I thought it was pretty clever.  At any rate, I'm tired and it's past my bedtime, so stay tuned for day 2 aka manana.

We got up bright and early to head out to Yautepec , where we were going to meet Gonzalo, Jessica (his wife), and some of her family out at their weekend home. Their place was beautiful and relaxing, and I though the colors of the house were beautiful. It was like the University of Texas meets the French. We hung out at their weekend home for a few hours, where we sat around and chatted and I smoked my final cigar of the week ( a Vegas Robaina Classico), and it was good. We had a great brunch, chatted a little more and took off for Mexico City. On our way back we stopped in Tazaplan so that I could buy a Horongo (poncho) to go with my sombrero, and while we were there we decided to indulge ourselves in the local beverage (a Michelada), which was a combination of fresh lemon juice, spicy ground chili's, and corona. It was yummy, and by yummy I mean yummy! I'll have to go back to Tazaplan sometime, as they seem to have a pretty good little hippie market, and there is a pyramid there , and there is a pyramid there that is at the top of the mountain right outside of town. I think it would be a lot of fun to make the hike sometime.                 Our trip back to Mexico City was uneventful and when we arrived we started getting ready to head back to San Antonio the next day. At about five in the afternoon Italo had to head out to the bus station to catch his bus to Laredo. That is one long bus ride! Aislynn and I headed out to the Coyocan market for a little while after he left, and then we ended the night with some domino's pizza with her grandparents. Manina got pretty talkative that night and I got to hear a bunch of stories about how much she loves Venice, and how there used to be a train from Mexico City to Laredo, and that Italo and Gonzalo used to love taking the train when they were children. It was really nice getting to hear some of her stories. Alas, the night is over and we are headed to bed, packed and ready to head out in the morning.                  I've already started planning my next trip to Mexico. I'd love to take the bus down through Guadalajara, and visit some of the tequila distilleries in the area and see the fields of agave that grow in the region. After that I'd love to head down to Acapulco and spend a couple of nights on the beach. After that I'd love to head back up toward Mexico City, spending a day in Tazaplan, and then while in Mexico City, I'd like to visit some of the museums, and head out to the floating gardens outside of town. It all sounds good in my head, but the problem is finding the time. Fourth year should allot me a little more vacation time, but I'm going to have to work my travels around my interview schedule. Oh well, I'm  not going to look that far ahead now, because I have another trip to look forward to here over the next couple weeks. Stay tuned amigo's!

Today was pretty glorious as far as days go. I didn't have to wake up at four in the morning, I got about ten hours of sleep, got to get going at my own pace, and then all that was on the agenda was heading to the pyramids of Teotihuacan. To top it all off it was a scorching 65-70 degrees outside in July. So we headed out for the pyramids, which is about a two hour drive from la casa de Tito, but if you could drive through it without stopping it would really only be about 45 minutes to an hour. Alas, this is Mexico City and if you are a traffic connoisseur then you should definitely make your way down here to indulge in some of the worlds finest. The drive was actually quite enjoyable and I found it very relaxing to drive through the city and see the outskirts. The poverty here becomes extremely apparent as you move to the outside of the city, and I thought to myself that it's kind of interesting how in the US generally speaking the rich live outside of the city and the poor live inside of it, but here it's the opposite. Wait... I know what you are thinking... Thank you captain obvious! Seriously though, I mean who'd a thunk? Right?                I was finally given a name today that I believe I can make stick. A nice little salesman with a moveable store ran into me today at the corner of Temple of the sun blvd and Street of the dead, and he beckoned me by the name "El hombre del puro" (The man of the cigar). I was caught so off guard by his stroke of genius that I almost bought one of his trinkets, but in the end I decided names are free and that I would just keep it. So from now on I will only respond to el hombre del puro, Doctor*, or the obvious Lucas Miguel Miranda de la Hoya Veracruz Cardenas de los Santos Caminador el Segundo. *This name does not take effect until May of 09, and before this time the person in context shall be known as Student Doctor, except in situations where other instructions have been provided by the National Board of Medical Educators.                I don't really remember exactly when we arrived at the pyramids, but they are a pretty amazing sight from the highway. Before I talk about the pyramids though let me tell you that something very important happened today. Today, I finally figured out how to use my GPS unit, and in celebration I used up an entire single bar of four on the battery meter playing with it on the ride up and back and all the time in between at the pyramids. It's hard to really describe the experience that is Teotihuacan, but walking into the park you can't help but wonder what happened to a culture of people that were able to build such a magnificent city. We mosied about, making our way to the Temple of the Sun slowly, taking in the views from different vantage points as if to try and implant these short term photos into our long term memories. The stones were overgrown with different plants and flowers in some places, there were ongoing excavations going on in others, and in others we could glimpse some of what this mysterious civilization was able to see every day. Of course the main Street (Cadera de los muertos) was teeming with eager junk gypsies and healthy amount of tourists, most of which could be seen struggling in a line to the top of the Temple of the Sun. I felt like a kid again; ready to run up and down the ruins of Tikal for a second time.                 The first temple conquered was the Temple of the Sun. when we reached the top I set a waypoint on my GPS, pushed my way to an open area, sat down, and pulled out a Montecristo Petit Edmundo that I immediately lit up (with a little help from the gf holding the match while I blocked the breeze). I basqued in my glory, hoping that I wasn't breaking some law by smoking at the top of this historic monument. My mind was put to ease by the other tourists I began to see lighting up their death sticks around me, but I didn't let the stench of their garbage ruin my Olympic torch of tobacco. We enjoyed the view from the top for quite a while, and to try and describe it would be a grave error on my behalf, so I have provided photos for your viewing pleasure. As I descended the temple I could be seen from a mile away with a smile as wide as the Amazon with smoke billowing from my nostrils on every seventh step, or at least that's the way it will go down in the history books.                 Little did I know that while I was making a fragrant sacrifice to the Gods of the Sun, they began to smile back quite heavily with the UV-B rays of appreciation. So great was their joy that they sent their rays through the cloudy sky to be enjoyed by all of the Vitamin D deprived individuals lurking around the temples. I guess they didn't realize that I was a gringo tourist and not a local, because when I got home and looked in the mirror this evening I brought new meaning to the word red man. Thank God the Aloe is free here! Besides the sunburn though, the day ended up being one for the books. We took in the Temple of the Moon, the museum,  some other temple whose name I can't remember, and beat the afternoon rain to the restaurant La Gruta, where we enjoyed the best Mexican food I have had in a long time (including San Antonio). I f I could have bought their Red salsa by the gallon I would have had to buy another bag to send it under the plane in, because it was to die for. I might not kill for pumps, I might not kill for drugs, but if you had a little cup of this salsa and weren't willing to share it you might consider yourself a dead man. This stuff definitely made me want to dance and take off my underpants ( Thanks Eminem)!

I woke up feeling much better than the night before thank goodness, but I still didn't feel fantastic. Luckily, I felt like my body was finally adapting to the altitude mostly based on the fact that I was able to sleep much better last night than I had the first night I was here. We decided to take it easy today. Italo was afraid I was about to get a visit from our little friend Montezuma, so he recommended we stay closer to home. After a lazy morning Aislynn and I went to see the Casa Azul, otherwise known as that place where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera rested their heads. The museum was enjoyable, but lacked the pieces of art that one generally expects to see when visiting the house of not just one, but two famous artists. The collection inside the house mainly consisted of some sketches, and photos of the two. There were a lot of their old daily household items, and only one or two paintings, which were seen in the very first room.                We spent the rest of the early afternoon wandering through the neighborhood near the Iglesia San Juan de la Bautista. We took in the local market, and stopped in a few pharmacies' looking for Cipro (just in case) and some Nasacort (to ease the woman's mind).  We were without an umbrella when it began to rain so we took cover in a little café on one of the corners and grabbed a couple coffee's and some cake, and watched the people go about their lives in the rain. At around 1345 we met Italo down the street for some Churro's (Mine with Cajeta). It was at this point that I decided to indulge in a Cipro just to ease my mind about the churro's, but if deep fried doesn't kill it then Cipro probably isn't going to do it either.                 Today was the day when I was going to get to head over to La Casa del Habanos and indulge myself in the forbidden fruit from that island south of Miami. It was also the day that Aislynn was going to get to go into Mexico City (which by the way I've been told is the most dangerous city in the world now???) semi-alone for the very first time. I love cigars, and the one thing I wanted to do in Mexico City was visit the La Casa del Habanos, so I had been chomping at the bit over this for quite some time, and in my head I had this vision, a vision of mid 90's Cohiba's and early edicion limitadas galore, as well as some open humidors of some things I had only seen in books. So, we were dropped off at the Metro, where we took the green line to the brown line and then switched again to the red line (which was actually orange) and got off at Polonco. If you can't remember it any other way remember this, you take the vomit to the poo to the blood, and then get off at Polonco. Yes, that just happened! After a good walk from the station we finally located the la Casa del Habanos in a small mall. Much to my chagrin, it was not the puro paradise that I had constructed in my dreams. The humidor was small, the humidity and temperature were off inside due to the air-conditioning being broke, and the woman taking care of me didn't really know anything about cigars. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that their selection was mediocre at best. Everything was new, with the exception of a few boxes, but even the new cigars didn't look very good. Every box I opened had cigars in it that were either too green, had mold on them, or were so dried out that half of the cigars in the box were cracked. To top it off I was even convinced that some of the cigars they were selling may have actually been fake. The bands did not look right at all on a couple boxes and I immediately placed them back on the shelf. They did have a couple of rare humidors...but alas, they were only being sold as complete sets and not as single sticks. Oh well, I guess there are worse things in life.After my letdown we headed down the street to the Hard Rock Café where we split a burger and I picked up a couple of shot glasses for my collection. We headed back to the metro station at rush hour to make our way back to Aislynn's house. The red line was not to crowded, but when we got to the brown line we barely pushed our way on to the Metro. I was the second to last one on and I was facing the door. When the door opened at the next stop I found myself face to face with about five Mexican men who decided that the metro wasn't full enough and they instinctively pushed me back into the cabin where I found myself surround on all sides with different body parts of different people. Aislynn the agoraphobe was freaking out appropriately as she always does in situations such as this (granted, some old man decided he would take this opportunity to place his hand on Aislynn's butt for the remainder of the trip), and I was just angry that I had been packed in tighter than a sardine by a few guys that were half my size. The next stop was where we needed to change trains, and when the doors opened the man in front of me who had so graciously put his elbows into my chest earlier refused to get out of my way. So, being the gentleman I am I grabbed him by the shoulders and literally threw him out of the door into the crown of people waiting to get onto the metro. As I moved quickly off the train and past him the guy behind me grabbed him again and pushed him to the side as if to say "Chinga la madre huevon!" I felt good, and I know Aislynn did as well getting off the train. Thankfully the next train we stepped into was less crowded and we were able to secure one seat so that Aislynn could have a little personal space. We decided to take the long walk home from the metro to blow off a little steam after the whole experience, but in the end we made it home safely, and with all of our stuff.

I had some wicked crazy dreams last night, and I found myself wide awake more than fast asleep most of the night. Nobody told me Mexico City was 7500 ft above sea level. If they had I would have prepared myself a little more with some Benadryl or some Tylenol PM. So, as we set out to see a little bit of the city, I found myself in a state of exhaustion that I have become quite familiar with over the past year of medical school. However familiar the feeling has become though, I still can't seem to get used to it. Our first stop after a nice little metro ride was the city center, where we stood in the center of Mexico's plaza de la constitution to take in the panoramic view of historic Mexico City. After viewing the inside of the cathedral, we ran some errands, and then ended up hoping on a turibus that took us for a ride through the city and via earphones, told us a little bit about some of the buildings and monuments we passed. Some of the more unique things that we saw included, a group of protesting nudists dancing in the street in the buff, a squirrel eating mango from a bag of fruit that was sitting by a man without him knowing, and then not budging much at all when shooed until the man gave him some fruit, and finally a late 90's Ford Mustang convertible with 7 Mexicans piled in. It was classic yet disturbing at the same time.                The entire day I felt run down. I found myself falling asleep on the turibus while we sat inside, as opposed to on top, to avoid some of the afternoon rain. We tried to go to some of the museum's, but unbeknownst to us they were closed on Monday, so we ended up chasing down a small cigar shop, Cava del Puro's, that turned out to be a little disappointing, and then slowly made our way back home via the metro. As soon as we arrived back at the house I took my warn-out, nauseated body up to the bedroom and immediately laid down for a nap. When I woke up it was past midnight, so I decided to continue sleeping and thus I bring us too day three.

Well, we have about 10 hours left here and it is pouring, so we are just chillin for now. Gonna go grab some grub and then probably head for the airport. Cheers all for keeping up with me! Ill get everything updated when I get back and have my own internet.It's worth noting that the Singapore airport is amazing! Free internet, free xbox, free gynormous televisions with sports and news, and they even have a bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII lack Pearl for sale in the duty free shop for the low price of somewhere along the lines of $38,000 US dollars. Still I've never actually seen a real one in existance until today. Oh and Singapore has a great LCDH for those of you who might care about something like that. Cheers!
