Wellington, North Island, New Zealand

I departed Kyabram on Thursday afternoon, and took the bus to Melbourne Airport.  Flew back into New Zealand on a rather empty plane, arriving in the early hours of the morning and met by my parents.Now settling back in, and have a mammoth task for sorting my stuff out including the boxes I sent home!!

Lusaka, Zambia

Hit the road early in the morning with the new group, including my sister Libby.  Today's journey was a 600km drive to Lusaka.  Not much to see along the way in Zambia for the next couple of days - previously the tours travelled through Zimbabwe to Malawi, as there was plenty to see and do.  But due to the political situation, overland tour companies no longer enter Zimbabwe.As you will see from the photos, when we stopped for lunch on the roadside we normally had a local audience.

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Early start in the morning so Libby and I were ready for the airport transfer, but it was so late we resorted to a taxi.  I was flying to Sydney, while Libby was heading back to New Zealand so we said our farewells as I went for my flight.Thankfully the Emirates flight was only a third full, so I had a row of seats to myself from Dubai to Bangkok and then Bangkok to Sydney.<<still to be completed>>

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Libby and I arrived in Dubai late at night, so started the exploring on Saturday morning.  As it was 43 degrees, decided the best way to see the city was by hop-on-hop-off bus.  It started touring the city centre, including Dubai Creek where ships and dhows are loaded up with goods and exported through out the Middle East and Northern Africa.Next the bus went along Jumeirah beach, and had a good view of Burj Al Arab hotel.  We stopped off at Mall of Emirates, which has 400 stores under one roof so we spent most of the afternoon there (bit strange being in a mall after 6 weeks of no shops or retail therapy with exception for open air markets).Following day was more exploring around Dubai.

Nairobi, Kenya

Final day of our tour, we departed Arusha at 6am in the morning.  It took 3 hours to drive 120km to the boarder due to the condition of the roads.  Thinking it would be better once we crossed into Kenya, the journey continued to be slow as the truck dodged various pot-holes along the way.Arrived in Nairobi mid afternoon, and said goodbye to the tour group.  Three of us decided to spoil ourselves, so had booked into the Fairview Hotel, which was an adventure in itself getting there.  Due to its location across the road from the Israeli Embassy, we were required to go through an armed road block.... these army boys had serious guns and ammunition on display.In the evening, a small group of us met up for a dinner at Carnivore Restaurant, which is an all-you-can-eat meat restaurant.  Inside the entrance is a massive charcoal bbq with countless spits of roasting meat from chicken and beef to various game meats..... believe it not, Carnivore has been voted one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.On Friday morning we visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.... i.e. an elephant and rhino orphanage which rehabilitates elephants and rhinos so they can be reintroduced into the wild.  It's a great initiative run by dedicated people, given the keepers work 24/7 and spend all their time with the animals. Afterwards, Libby and I headed to the airport for the flight to Dubai.

Chipata, Zambia

Another long day of driving 600km to reach Chipata, which is near the Malawian boarder.  Not much to see along the way, but we did pass through an intesting village and managed to get a few photos.

Arusha, Tanzania

At sunrise we departed the campsite and drove into the Ngorongoro Crater, wrapped up in our colourful Masai blankets because it was freezing.  The first sighting was two male cheetahs, followed by various birds including flamingos, then onto the waterhole where hippos were in no short supply.Also managed to see a pride of female lions with three cubs, a number of hyena with cubs, zebra and wildebeest, ostrich, then lucky to spot yet another cheetah.In the afternoon we returned to the campsite in Arusha, and in the evening had a fancy dress dinner.  As you can see in the photo, the colourful Masai blankets came in very handy!!

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

At sunrise we started another game drive in the Serengeti.  While one of the girls in the jeep had most of us engrossed with a story about her parrot, someone managed to spot a cheetah with 3 babies walking through the long grass.  Before long, we are joined by several other jeeps and watched the mother teach the babies how to catch food.  She caught a rabbit, stunned it and let it go so one of the babies could finish the kill.  Very interesting to watch.To add to the highlights, we were fortunate to see another leopard - this one was sleeping in a tree, and on closer inspection, near it was slung a dead gazelle it was saving for later.We continued the game drive until lunch time, then started the journey to the Ngorongoro Conversation Area, where we camped on the rim of the crater.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Monday morning we were picked up in 4WD jeeps, and started the 4 hour drive to the Serengeti with our driver Small Dr Livingstone.  Once we arrived in the National Park, we saw various animals including lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, hippos, and monkeys.The highlight of the day was finally spotting a leopard - these cats are hard to find!  However, this female teenager wandered along the road for 20 minutes as a number of jeeps followed her.  This is very unusual behaviour for a leopard, and Small Dr Livingstone had only once seen a leopard this close for a very brief moment.In the evening we did bush camping in the Serengeti, and even though we had heard great stories of animals wandering around the tents, there were too many groups around so no such luck.
