Knowing that my days in asia were drawing to a close were both exciting and nerve wracking for me during my time here. I loved the cheap beer and some of the parties on the beach, i managed to grab cheap dorm accomodation where i made a few solid mates but alot of the people seemed to change from day to day, there were a few cliques as well but thats life isnt it!Aside from lapping up the beach i managed to score a fishing trip on a boat with a couple of manchester lads (again multi-cultural or what!) that was run by an new zealander ex pat, who along with his hells angels tattoo's and all was a very guy nice, surprise surprise considering he looked like a brick wall and snarled when we entered his bar that morning!highlights of the day were catching what appeared to be a baby shark (christ) which was immediately thrown back into the water along with the general concensus that it didnt happen not us guv, didnt see anything la la la etc. I managed to catch a few decent ones and generally enjoyed the chilled out sunny beer style vibe that accompained the day!As well as this i didnt do all that much, just frequenting the local food markets, talking to locals, random adventures, the usual.Soon it was time to leave, and i was going back to bangkok to sort out my flights, count my money and get ready to go on a plane to sydney...!

Siem Reap, Cambodia

The ride from bangkok to cambodia involved one very dodgy border where the object of this particular game is to try and make/take as much money from backpackers through "offical taxes" and "oh sir sir sir sir, you cant, cannot, CANNOT, go this way sir, i know the best way, honestly sir on my life, if we drive down this way (signposted 1 mile to the border) there will be ninjas and dragons and pirates and all manners of bandits and land mines and soldiers and more pirates. HOWEVER, pay me a special fee, and i will direct us to the correct road with your safety intact. I hadnt had much sleep, i couldnt be arsed, he got the middle finger, i got a motorbike from the bus station to the border for a quid. with no problems Have it right up you!Once in cambodia the roads change from nice and smooth and tarmaced to rough and ready, i had a 5 hour ride sitting along a driver who liked to rev up and speed over huges bumps in the road and then look at me dead in the eye with a combination of glee and insanity, he didnt speak much english but the impression i got was, THIS IS FUN YES, SUSPENSION, WHO CARES, AGAIN AGAIN! lots of near misses involving parts of the road going missing and cows but im still here to tell the story.Arriving in siem reap i got the jist of the place, ANGKOR? SPECIAL PRICE, SPECIAL TOUR SPECIAL TIME! this mantra is repeated by anyone with or without a mode of transport, the temples themselves are fantastic and i only had one day to get my self round them (which i did, an absolutely glorious experience that left me utterly knackered and overwhelmed). So you can see why the local can and do sell the place big time, they make alot of money from it, and in an developing country, the kind of money tourists (even at the backpacker level) throw about is not to sniffed at, everyone wants a piece.Next i headed down to the capital. When it comes to either pronouncing it or indeed spelling it i am always flummoxed and head for google. But im gonna be brave and give it a shot. Pheon phom. No phoem Phen. Oh whatever, the big place, in the middle of cambodia, with lots of traffic. With the riverside hotel where i stayed and had loads of fun!Thats right the one where we gatecrashed the "wine bar"  opening, or spent day lolling about on the riverfront talking shit and generally doing nothing.Aside from this i got to go round the killing fields and the s-21 prison. Aside from being jaw droppingly morbid it didnt really fill me with a sense of sadness or apathy. If you want more information on the place i suggest you go ahead and google "pol pot" or the khymer rouge. Im not gonna get into a whole debate essay as this is meant to be my light hearted blog but the killing fields are just that, a place were thousands and thousands of innocent civilians were killed. These places didnt make me sad they just made me extremely angry.The feather that broke the horses back was a sign that announced "the whipping tree". This was a place where women and children were lined up, beaten with electrical wire and then shot to death. Id had enough, time to leave. I had a few more nights on the deck of the hostel (sounds odd eh!) and then decided to head down to the beachs of the south for a bit.

Dalat, Vietnam

Just a short entry for this one, although thats not to say i didnt have a fantastic time! I ventured up into the hills of vietnam on an overnight bus journey with the most stupidly ridiculous bed arrangements ever! i have photos that explain it, words fail me! But anyhoooooooo, i was up here to go on a motorbike tour around the surrounding countryside, something other people had suggested to me as unmissable. A local collection of riders called the "easy riders" (you like? i like, cheesy name, but i love cheese!) can take you on a range of tours from a day around the local sights to 8 days tours all the way up to Hue. i was heading there soon after but the budgets were a little too high for me and i figured id get a sore arse sitting on a bike for all that time.Needless to say it was utter bliss, riding along on a souped out harley, zipping along country roads and just cruising at other times taking in the silence and beauty of what is a very special country. I got to meet locals, i got challenged to drinking competition by locals, free food, more handshakes than i thought physically possible, i got to wander round silent places of worship trying not to disturb the local monks and as well as sampling the homegrown coffee beans which were fantastic and world famous i got to see a whole bunch of perfect views, waterfalls, you name it it was there.Fully recommended, if you ever happen to be in vietnam!

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Right so this blog is separated in to two parts for ease of.....right well i cant be arsed really so there we are, anyway mui ne and nha trang, two southern towns on the coast vietnam, get it, got it, good.Right mui ne! what was a fishing village now appears to be a hotel village, there are lots of lovely quiant little markets to go and visit, a nice little "fairy stream" that you can paddle through, desert like sand dunes that you can slide down on a sled (woop). The highlight of my time here was discovering a massive halloween rave at a disused lodge just down the road from where i was staying, I was a little put out that i wouldnt be celebrating halloween as it didnt seem to have any impact over here but then as i was walking back from a meal one night i saw a couple of zombies staggering down the street and well the rest is history! Only stayed in mui ne for a couple of days because of my limited 1 month visa and there seemed to be so much more to see....so i headed a bit further along the coast to Nha Trang.Nha trang was definately the more commerical of the two towns  (if that were possible). Although Mui Ne seemed to have building work going on everywhere and then some, Nha trang seemed more established and had lots of cafes and resorts/bars dedicated to us good all old fashioned westener/culture plundering tourists. You get exactly what you came for though, sun during the day (when it didnt rain which was quite alot unfortunately!).Some days it just seemed to utterly pour with rain and other days were complete belters, the sun is so strong over here it gets uncomfy after half an hour! The highlight of my Nha trang visit aside from a good night out or two was venturing to a luxury mud spa style thingie place! After about 6 months of being on the road it was utter luxury getting a nice relaxing massage and soaking in the mineral enriched mud, you then walk/run/dance through a wall that has jet powered water spraying out and it leaves you feeling like a new man!

Hue, Vietnam

Having done the motorbike shizzle in dalat, i decided to head north, lots north infact, an overnight buses worth of travel north, i ended up in the boutique town that is hoi an, its famous for its tailoring and every other shop wants to sell you shirts trousers suits, dresses shoes ties everything, YOU BUY CHEAPEST PRICE! the catch with the majority of these shops was not the price of the clothes themselves but the shipping back home, the clothes were incredibly cheap to say they were individually tailored but after alot of bartering it just seemed to be worthless! too many tricks, "taxes" talk of import duty, i felt scammed so i decided against it!.I got a bit fed up of the rainy season at this point, it seemed like id picked the wrong time of year to be heading off to vietnam, maybe it was just bad luck, the weather is so varied in this country that the guide book basically confuses you more than you were to start with. But it was on my second to last night that i happened to stumble upon an old schoolfriend in the middle of this dainty little cobbled town, hello ivan if your reading! we shared a few beers and plenty of stories, it was an unbelievable shock to be sitting there with someone i hadnt seen in over 7 years and there was plenty to tell!Next came hue, with its wonderful palace, but again the rain continued, day after day after...well it was just getting me down, despite the welcoming people and the lovely food i knew it was time to move on, lao's was next!

don det, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

So i decided id had enough of the constant rain following me in vietnam, or rather my visa was about to expire so it was time to hot foot it over the border, a combination of the two really, weather websites in lao's promised sunshine and no rain, how could i resist? I was travelling to don det, also known as the "thousand islands" which reside on both sides of the lao's cambodian border, id be going right to the edge of cambodia but sadly not crossing over the border yet, id already decided to spend my xmas in thailand and booked some accomodation on the beach on ko phan gan, how could i resist, REALLY!So anyway don det is famous for the rivercreek that sometimes allows a early morning peek at a dolphin, however all the travellers i talked to said it involved being hussled onto a boat at 6am, and being told a merky tiny little spec in the distance was infact, the afforementioned flipper, i couldnt be bothered shelling out dollar for this so decided to spend my money on the other attraction that brings people to this secluded remote little village on the river mekong.The incredibly cheap and potent weed! (hi mum!). You can get it in a milkshake, pizza, spag bol, curry, smoke it, drink it eat it, whatever it, and because it grows au natural around here, it costs about the same price as a pint of milk back home. So along with my two new swedish friends, olaf and "happy" (his name was happy, he greeted people with the words, happy! this chap had been here a while and was very very very happy).We set about the island observing the differant cafes, chatting to other travellers, enjoying the perfect sunsets that seemed to slowly fire across the mekong as well as few adventures out into the country including adopting a pet pig (oink) that followed us around like a true champ and gentlemen for a few days (this ended when a cafe owner offered to roast the pig there and then for us, truely a barbaric moment!) and meeting a lao's family that kept a monkey as a pet on a piece of string and made him dance. As well as this we used to piss about on the river in inflatable tubes enjoying the sun and the slow current).None of the above has in anyway, been afflicted by the possible intake of any mind  alterating substances, oh no officer, not me.  I cant say its something i do much when im back home but this is a holiday and adventure so , once in a while, or for the good part of a week before i dragged myself off the island  muttering happy happy times...why not!I have fond memories of this place :0D

Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

Ah so after lazying about in the south i decided to bus it up north on an overnight bus that arrived in mid afternoon and led to me crawling into a hostel, securing a dorm bed in a pretty shit but, yes very important, CHEAP (2 dollar) dorm that had all the mod cons that your average travelling slob requires (bed, cushion, shower, toilet, fin). I then spent the next few days exploring the capital (including the tres chic, or rather tacky however you choose to look at it copy of the arc d triumph) that featured in the centre of the city.Again those charming french garlic type folks had had an obvious input in this city and its cuisine so whilst in rome its important to sod that and go for a curry! I hadnt had one in over 3 months and it really didnt disaspoint, for the price of a pint in your average yorkshire pub i got a tikka masala and the rest (nan bread rice poppadoms) in such quantanties even i decided i couldnt finish it. Sad but true i was missing india a tiny little bit, i dont think its a feeling that will ever leave me, india is a wonderful wonderful place, and i plan to return as soon as fate allows me to!Never the less my time in vietaine was good if not a little emo, if i hadnt made myself clear, I WAS MISSING INDIA. !!!But anyway onwards and upwards i decided, after confirming my full moon party accomodation down in ko phan-gan, i decided to head to the town of viet vang for a couple of days which is what was probably back in the day a lovely chilled tiny little village where people lived on nothing but rice smiles and lot of interbreeding (sounds like your average manc) but had now been completely and utterly taken over by backpackers for the fact that the fantastic river that runs through it is great for tubing kayaking and being sick after one too many buckets. Culture, we have it in buckets! (ho ho).Anyway i decided to go anyway, and really enjoyed it. The river is set up with bars at either side and as you float along in your tube there are bars that throw out a piece of wood attached to rope and then pull you in trying to ply you with drinks and the fresh recent hits of will smith and erasure. How could a man resist??? Some bars were more complex than others, featuring rope swings and water slides, others were just a sound system and a wooden barge!After a few days here again my lao's visa was approaching its "time to get out" stage so i booked an overnight bus to bangkok and set off for the full moon party.

Ko Phangan, Thailand

Crikey, well when i first rolled up, tired as hell from an overnight bus from the southern terminal in bangkok, to be sheparded onto a ferry that lurched its way over to the island itself, the island seemed like less than bliss. Id spent the entire night trying to look at the moon as the bus weaved its way up and around and down the major highway, using the usual thai/asian method of blasting your horn as a way of letting people know you were overtaking and if you didnt like it, tough shit!So why was i looking at the moon all night? Well i honestly couldnt figure out if the moon was entirely full or just missing a smidden or not, id managed to work myself into a case of minor paranoia, convinced id got the nights wrong and id arrive at an island with a collective massive hangover with everyone informing me about "the bestest night ever ever ever ever". But that wasnt the case, i was greeted by half a dozen moto drivers shouting full moon party party, and then they reeled off a list of drugs longer then the magna carta, i hadnt even got on the island yet!But get on the island i did, and i needed a few hours winks before i set out. Thankfully afterwards there were a few other confused souls like myself wondering about the party, having just arrived and been bundled off to this villa resort with some other ferry companions, so we grabbed a tuk tuk and headed out to the beach.Which was emmmmpty.What! oh well it seems the party actually starts at around 10pm, there were plenty of locals setting up the stages, lighting effects bars and all that jazz and the centre/town was BUSY as hell, but there werent that many people on the beach. So we jumped into one of the busy bars and proceeded to partake in a couple of slightly intoxicating drinks.And then the sun went down.I have a love/hate relationship with dance music, what you'd describe as loving stuff like the prodigy, the chemical brothers soulwax, anything like that, and an irrational, almost violent dislike of eurotechnicvondutchompaompavengaboys whatever it is they call it these days, kids eh!Thankfully the beach (which was now full to the brim, with everyone having moved from the bars to the beach almost simutaneously it appeared) was almost like a mecca for the music fan, as you moved from one place to the other, the music changed from genre to genre. Classic idea i thought, top bombing.The night itself was as you'd expect, a tiny bit messy. There arent actually any police on the island and the whole place is governed by extremely rich locals, chuck in some private bodyguards, a couple of unoffical army chaps (in uniform looking very mean) bouncers who would break up any fights that happened to start, i saw a few, but mainly the party seemed to reside on the edge of anarchy (people burning stuff, running around with wooden poles etc) without actually descending into madness.We stayed there all night, it was obviously as the night wore on that not everyone was made to party. Lots of people being sick, or having sexy time, or passed out. Or all 3 at the same time, Cracking! At about 5am me and what remained of our random group (which changed regularly as we met and lost people old and new) Finally headed along to what is known as mellow mountain. Guess what happens up here kids! It involves mushrooms that paul daniels would be proud of, served as a milk shake, if you want more info about them get in touch, the only thing i am saying is FANTASTIC!We saw the sun rise and everyone, rose from their half inherbited slumber and had a dance to celebrate, now thats what i call a night out.Fuck that was long, anyway i decided to stay even longer on the island these adventures will continue onto part 2....

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

After flying via bangkok to singapore where i spent the next few days alternating between furiously cradling my passport (i lost the last one there) and looking at my watch (unless you've come to shop, or like spending huges amounts of dollars for your basic needs singapore will bore the pants off you). Sorry singapore - there are actually a few interesting places to go here, im sure if you tried really hard you could entertain yourself for at least oooh, an  hour?Or you could just mong about and watch dvds/eat/eat/eat/sleep/update your blog like every other fool does. Anyway the time finally came and having sorted my vietnam visa in bangkok it was a 2 hour flight over the south china sea and id finally arrived in my first communist country, now then comrades!Saigon was lively! lots of bars and clubs and lots of little alleyways to have a wander down and explore, whilst others were less so tempting! I managed to bag a dorm bed for 2 dollars a night and buoyed by this i stayed for a further 4 or 5 days,did a mekong tour which was both impressive (the river is so wide you feel like your out at sea) and restrictive(its a tour, it cost 4 dollars, the path is well worn,its so worn its littered with numerous touts and children selling everything you need - water,munchies, and everything you dont, little trinklets,dolls, shoes, magazines, wild cockrels...!).I also got time to visit the war remnants museum which was very interesting,the famous "chi chi" tunnels used by vietnamese soldiers to confuse and fool a whole bunch of northern vietnamese soldiersfor the duration of the war, we western fatties were given the chance to go down a specially "widen' one,which still meant you had to crouch down on all fours and squeeze your shoulders in to move about, after about 50ft of shuffling along you start to wonder how people spent days,weeks, months down in these tunnels with little more than candle light and pho (local delicacy, white thick noodles in a steaming soup with beef, gorgeous!).

Ko Phangan, Thailand

So having drunkingly booked into a new place a bit out of the party scene in order to get some much needed rest, well i had to get there. The two options on the island tend to be motorbike or a tuk tuk and i decided to plump for a motorbike, one its cheaper, two i quite like riding on em, its a bit of a thrill.Up until this point!As we were chugging along the roads (which are fantastic, they bounce up and down at almost vertical heights and offer great views of the sea, really scenic). I spotted a dog sunning itself off in the distance, so did the driver. The conversation went thus:Driver: oh lazy stupid dog hahahahahahaMe:.....dont talk about dogs like that! i love dogs, dogs are fantastic, awwh i miss my dog his name is.....We were going at a speed (which is normal for a motodrivers, the faster they go the more they earn) and had zipped right up to where the poor mutt was. Being a dog, and obviously, stupid! it decided to try and out race us across the road to the safety of the bush. And lost. It wasnt pretty, we hit the poor thing dead on and everything, including my bags, myself my driver and the poor mutt went crashing in a right big mess along the road. Luckily i managed to fly backwards off the bike (although i caught my toe on the exhaust on the way out ripping my nail off, OUCH!), did a few ninja rolls and then sat bolt upright on my arse, the driver went down with the bike and the dog went under it.It was a few minutes before another bike or car ( i cant remember, actually a car they helped me in and took me to the nearest clinic, thanks for that random thai people that will never read this) came along, and the worst sound i have ever heard is that of a dog yelping and crying in pain. I joined in for a bit after checking out my feet and knee which were gashed upto fook. I was honestly convinced my toes were mangled, although when i got to the hospital after it had all been washed and cleaned it was obviously id just take a few great big chunks out of my toes and knee, and they'd be reet with time.Fresh with clean bandages and lots of lovely tablets i finally made it to my new home where i got lots of sympathy, and made plenty of new friends where i soaked up the sun, enjoyed the beach (but not the sea, boo!) and generally chilled out.Next came the black moon party (the opposite of the full moon party for those not quick off the mark). The drama never ends does it. Having had a great night i had a bit of a dance and got seperated from my chums, deciding a taxi back to the resort was a good idea, i was approached by a thai gent who very generously offered to take me for a ride. Literally.We were walking along the path to the main road and i was thinking, this isnt...the right way. "you have money, pay for tuk tuk, not cheap special party, very important, how much, how much you give, give me, GIVE"! As you'd guessed by now this chap wasnt really a tuk tuk driver, i cant imagine how much money he makes out of conning pissed up travellers but whilst its not right i cant fully condemn him, i mean its half my fault for getting in such a state in the first place.Anyway regardless the chap thought the best method of withdrawing my money from my good person (im a western money spurting machine after all, i mean all westerners are insanely rich and have huge volumes of cash, isnt that right!....) was to pat me down looking for goodies. On encountering a little resistance he decided to extend the good hand of inter-country relations and punch me square on the chops. Not very clever, it sobered me up quick sharp and i allowed him to lean into take my wallet before a moment of clarity appeared in one of my remaining brain cells, i am yorkshire, yorkshire people do not take this shit, what would a yorkshire person do? So i headbutted him straight on the nose, he crumpled onto the floor and i ran away as fast as my little feet would carry me, found a taxi, uttered those immortal heroic words of "GO FUCKING GO!" and then made my way back to camp where i made out i was some sort of superhero strong man for the next 2 weeks.Having woken up the next day it was xmas day, i didnt do alot, didnt get any presents boo! but i did treat myself to a full slap up xmas meal along with andy and paul, the three welsh girls i was staying with and jack who was from brum. Ah dont even say i dont expand my horizens when i go travelling, i meet so many differant nationalities!I also got to speak to all the family back home which was fantastic to see all their smiling faces, esp my little niece and my nanna. I extended my stay even further up until new years eve, where the madness of the full moon party was in full swing again. Getting a bit disgruntled with the whole group ethic of "oh lets all go over here, where do we want to go, shall we go over here, where shall we go next" which i felt was taking the fun out of my party, i decided to give everyone a great big hug and go off on my own little adventure. Which i did, new years was amazing, and i met up with everyone again at sunrise up at mellow mountain and toasted in the new year. It was time to leave, but never to forget.
