Rab, Primorsko-Goranska, Croatia

Great little place to relax, with plenty of beaches (topless, nude or otherwise), hiking, boating and more. Heavily touristed by northern Europeans, with lots and lots of skin on the beaches and boats, and a very interesting medieval town made for wandering tourists.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Ličko-Senjska, Croatia

Hiked all day with another traveler from New Zealand, all around the lower and upper lakes, which took 6-7 hours in tremendous heat, but it was very scenic and interesting, and quite a workout! Turns out she was some sort of ultimate frisbee athlete, so most of the effort was keeping up with her.....

That night we stayed at a local guy's house (18US$!) and had a very nice room. I had one of my most interesting conversations, as this man had quite a war story: Serb but Croatian, married to a Catholic Croat who died after the war, spent 6 years of the war in the relative safety of Zagreb, came back to a thoroughly vandalized home with 1m of garbage filling every room, his neighbours who are relatives chose to support and fight on the Serbian side against Croatia, but now live back in Croatia next door....etc etc etc.......lots of tension in the air, to this day! The stories went on and on, in pretty good English....and it turned out this guy had lived in France at some point so he would also fill in missing words with French. Real cool to talk to an old dude like this.
