Hi everyone Yes i know i am rubbish with communication!!!  I dont reply to anyone really - as dont have regular internet access!!   For the last 4 months as you know i worked the ski season, that all came to an end at the beginning of october.. I then got a job labouring for a local builder to get some cash in my pocket to move on..  I got to a stage where i had not 1 dollar to my name (again) so had to do something about it..  Anyway, got all that sorted and worked for just under 2 weeks on a new house bulid which was great experience..   Had mates come back from all over to celebrate my birthday on the night of the 22nd into the 23rd - it was a joint affair as my other house mate was turning 30 a few days after me so we decided (of course) to have a joint knees up.. (oh and his twin came over from the UK aswell so it was a triple 30th)!!  Was a night of drinkin of course - the location  being at our cottage..  Had a BBQ, wore party hats, danced in the living room, drank, smoked and did pretty much that until i turned 30 and carried on until i wasnt able to walk anymore!!!  The next day was spent hung over but the sun shined on us so enjoyed my actual birthday sat out in the sunshine... :) A few days later, i packed up my life and moved out of the cottage and headed to an outdoor dance festival not far outside Christchurch with all of my stuff crammed into my car...  Unfortunatly the forcast was rain!!!  Once we got set up the heavens opened!!  The only way we kept our spirts up was to drink lots of spirits so we did just that...!  Completely forget about the rain after that and danced like idiots all night..  The next day was wet as well but cleared up in the afternoon so we got trashed again and again danced like fools til the wee hours.. This brings me to where i am now....  I am currently living like a gypo camping for free next to a surf beach 10 mins outside Kaikoura on the east coast of the south island... few!!  So thus far i have been applying for jobs and getting my camp sorted..  Gonna get a surf board soon and join in the fun at meat works (name of surf break) but will probably surf further down where the waves arnt so angry!!!! Aim to be doing this for the next 6 weeks before i head back to Christchurch to catch my flight to OZ to spend christmas with the man who provided me with half my genetic make up!!  (See you soon dad).. So that is that for now folks, again sorry i have been so rubbish with comms but i have not had access to a computer so.... The time has come when the beek enters into a world of snow and fun!!Thought i would let you all know how my Porters ski training weekend went and what crazy things and experiences lie ahead for me over the next 4 months... I have an afternoon free to write another epic blog so if you have the time then grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy another day in the life of me, myself and I...I had some slight money worries not too long ago as i am sure those of you on facebook can testify too..  25 quid was an all time low for me thus far and i was getting a little twitchy as to what i was going to do with the training weekend just a week away!!!  Shireen at the farm offered me a bit of cash to get me to springfield and so did dad (oh and morgan - thanks heaps by the way) but i wasnt having any of it.!  I knew deep down that it would all work out and once i had got over my little patch of doubt and stress it got my positivity back.. few..  The inland revenue have alot to answer for in terms of their back dated intrays!  They run at least a month behind real time with their incoming post meaning that my rebate (applied for 2 months previous) was 3 weeks away from being sorted!!!!!!  arrrggghhh..  Once i had got over the wobble and the cursing i had the bit of luck was needing thanks to mum and mike (god bless you guys..)..  Four days before i was due to leave for the training weekend mum sold my golf clubs and mike sold my golf shoes meaning that 40 quid was on its way to my account and all my short term money worries were over. ! yay.. (what mike doesnt know is that during the call when he said that the stuff had sold, i was gonna ask him to put 50p in my account just so i could withdraw $10 without going into my overdraft)!!  That is how bad it got.. ha haSo the training weekend...  Thanks once again to my farm family they kindly offered to let me borrow a car to drive over to springfield (300km round trip) so that is indeed what i did.. :)  It was soo nice to have the independence back again, no more relying on people to ferry me around just me and the open road..  What made it even better was the fact that the car i borrowed was an jap imported mazda mx3 with a 1.8 twin cam 16valve V6 engine...  It was like a rocket..So i set off on Friday the 13th (!!!!) to homer land to meet my fellow co workers and actually talk to PEOPLE instead the inner voice and the shagging penguins!! ha ha  The drive was great as it was as much of a buzz getting there as the thought of doing the training weekend its self; the roads are long and scenic with plenty of opertunity to add another lead weight to the right foot! smokin.  Once i had got through the christchurch traffic trying to remember the differences in NZ road rules, i was on a one way ticket to mountain land with just an hour of open road ahead..  As soon as i saw my first glimpse of the snowy peaks i have to admit i could have cried.. !  I am sure you can imagine - the sun was setting over the back of the snowy vista, i was driving a car i didnt own, in country i am not from,  on route to start the job i only had an interview for when i arrived and to top it all off the money side was sorted,  things just could not have been any better...My accomodation for the first night was in the local backpackers joint which was joined to the Springfield hotel..  I had pictured something very different to what it actually turned out to be but as usual it reminded me to leave all expectations at home and leave reality to drive the senses!!  It was a pretty run down place not to different to farm lodgings but there were a few of the porters crew checked in and within 1 minute i was sat down chatting over a cup of tea..  It wasnt too long before the rest of the liftys etc were rolling up and an evening of beer and "getting to know each other" commenced..  Bit of present tense for you; there is a great mix of people on the crew, english, scottish, kiwi, argentinian, swedish, canadian and american..Day 1 : After breakfast, which consisted of pan fried lamb heart (!!!)  courtesy of my fellow kiwi lifty toby (what a guy) and toast we were all picked up in a mini bus from the village hall..  The atmosphere was electric as we were all really looking forward to meeting the full crew up at the lodge on the mountain and starting the training..The lodge was as you would imagine, wooden in structure, open plan with an alpine feel..  Unfortunatly the mountain was lacking in snow (only bits here and there) so we couldnt really get a picture of what it is going to be like once the season starts which was a bit disapointing but i guess mother nature cannot be relied on and patience was needed from all.  The ski field its self is a bit strange..  It isnt a huge area and although it is a commercial ski field it is privately owned by 5 investers and manned/managed by a small but tight knit team which we are all now part of.  It is westerly facing area so it tends to get effected but the sun more so than its larger brother Mt Hutt which is southerly..  The terrain is steep and is 50% geared toward the more advanced skiier/snowboarder but has a few intermediate runs and a beginners area.  The wind is the main problem at porter heights as if snow falls it is likely that the wind will just blow it straight off the mountain to the next range.  To give you an idea of the conditions i will be working in let me just say that the max wind recorded last season was 210km/hour!!!  Oh and to add another little factor into that equation, the lift operators (ie, moi) has no shelter from that wind!  It is not like the fields in europe with the nice little operator stations, oh no, i am out in the full force! Next fact; porter heights is a class A avalanche zone and in 1994 an rather large one off of bluff face destroyed everything causing $630'000 worth of damage..  Training was provided on the sunday and we were all told that every member of the team will be key in the search and rescue missions if such an avalanche should happen.  To set all your minds at rest (namly mum and nan), the whole area is policed by the ski patrol crew and controlled explosions are carried out as part of the avalanche procedure so i will be safe and sound albeit cold!! ha haThe saturday was kind of a get to know everyone meaning it all started with introducing ourselves to the rest of the team which is always something i look forward too (not).  Customer service and safety are the 2 main driviers in the business so we concentrated heavily on those two key areas over the weekend starting with the first..  A consultant came in and we were all subjected to group based torture using paper, juggling balls, pens and an imagination.  I never like doing things like that but as always the pleasure pain thing kicks in and i end up volunteering myself to be the spokes person for the team and present to the rest of the group why customer service is so important and what things we could all do to make porters the friendliest mountain in canterbury!!!!  Why steve, WHY!!After some lunch and lift based training on the mountain we settled down to a few free beers and some short videos about porters including the videos and pictures from the past avalanches!!!  (Sleep well hey)!That night we had a meal cooked for us by the cafe manager and a well stocked fridge to delve into with a whole host of beers to choose from so me and the team got stuck in and continued the "getting to know each other" part of the weekend over a many games of table tennis and table football.. :) (whilst England were being thrashed by the all blacks in wellington)!!!Day 2 : Safety, safety and more safety... As boring as it is there are soo many hazards involved when working on a ski field that you have to take note..  We had a guy come in and do a talk on ski field safety which involved just a few basic group exercises and alot of just being talked at!!  It struck me from the very start just how far NZ is behind with safety matters, they sort of cover all bases but having worked for a pharms company within engineering in the UK there were alot of holes in places where there shouldnt have been holes so i think i will have to make a few suggestions especially reguarding engineering and lifty practices!!!The rest of the day was spent doing avalanche training, being briefed by ski patrol and trying on our uniforms which i have to say are awsome..  I will officially be the milk tray man, lets just hope my boarding catches up with the way i look on the slopes!!One other thing about the mountain i didnt mention is that there are no chair lifts!!!  To get up to the 2000m summit you have to get on 3 drag lifts (t-bars) one of which is 1km long and very steep!!  "There maybe trouble ahead"!!!Right to sum it all up, i am now back at the farm (ish) and am on standby until the snow starts to fall..  I am due to start on the 26th but that could change so i will probably head back to springfield this week..  I am hopefully gonna be living with my new buddy Toby and cat in a 4 bed farm house 5 km from springfield for the small amount of $50p/w but i am waiting on the call for that one..Ok then...  Sorry about the length of the blog but i guess the people who read it will be the people who are actually interested in what i am doing so for all you guys i will be in touch with the next instalment when i can be arsed.. :) In a bit..The wanderer. x

Welcome to the window of my world..Since i last mailed you all i have been pretty much flat out on thefarm in Akaroa..  95% of my time has been spent doing carpentry in asmall 18th century clay house that Shireen has been building over thepast 4 years.  The building is (as said) mostly made up of clay butalso includes a bit of mud and a healthy dose of cow pooh which acts asthe binding agent.  This mad mix of ingredients  is what forms all ofthe walls and for most part "the house" but it is built around a timberframe covered by a tin roof.  When i arrived all of the exterior waspretty much done so the house looked in good shape but the inside wasfar from finished which is where i have been helping to complete..So far i have built the main ladder up to loft (sleeping area) with allthe hand rails and secured it to the floor, boxed in the ceiling downstairs, built a banister around the stairs on the first floor andcompletly finished the sleeping area by again insulating and boxing inboth sides of the space to create the finished room..  The house nowhas guttering front and back and i have also been making and fittingthe surrounds for the internal windows and doors..  I am sooo proud ofthe work that i have done as i can safely say that my experience beforecoming here was little to none..  They cant believe the transformationi have made and are over the moon with how the house is coming on soall in all it has been a win win situation (obviously my cogs and oiltraining has paid off - as cath used to put it).. ha ha :)About a week ago the family decided to go away for a while on a huntingtrip and asked if i mined looking after the farm whilst they weregone....  Can you even believe that!!!!  Anyway, they did go and i had1200 acres of land to myself (except the 6 dogs, cat, ducks, 700 sheep,10 cows, 1000 penguins, countless seals, stoats............... (i wasntalone)! ha  I was the only oooooman being though so i kind of had toput that rather scary thought to the back of my mind and enjoy thepeace and quiet..  The only thing i had to make sure to do whilst theywere gone was to feed the dogs...  That would be an easy job hey...?  Acouple of tins of pedigree chum and some dry biscuits maybe..? Sorted.......  NO.. HA HA........   Nothing is that straight forward ona kiwi farm..  The working dogs spend all day chasing sheep round theland, their main source of food is sheep (believe it or not)..  Youwould think they would kill all the stock, well that is how i see itanyway..  This is what they normally eat, an old sheep is shot andchopped up and fed to the dogs in lumps with the wool still attached(which kind of adds to my theory of why they dont kill the stock)!! Anywho.... Mutton was on the menu the first night i fed them as dan hadput some out the night before to defrost in the killing house..  Noproblem..  I also had to get some meat out for the following day.. Check the freezer and noticed (as dan had said) that possum was on themenu... RIGHT...  I had shot these little buggers a few weeks previousand there they were all frozen solid chilling in the corner...whole....!  I did as instructed and these were my instructions..  "Just cut em in half and chop off the claws, that'l be right".... OK... So i grabbed 3 whole frozen possums and took them down the killinghouse where my masterclass of butchery was about to commence - onlythat i had no teacher as i was on my own remember!!!  "Where are thesharp knives ?" i couldnt see anything that in my mind i could use tocomplete this task....  "think steve, think"..  I looked around and itwas then to my horror that i noticed what was ahead of me, i had neverin my life thought i would ever have to do what i was about to do.... Infront of me was a rather large part of a tree commonly called a "treetrunk" which was not far from the dogs with a rather large felling axestuck in the top..  I wandered over and it was then that i noticed thebits of fluff embedded in and around each and every ring of that poortrees life.. SHIT...  This is where the butchery was to take place andit had to be one of the oddest experiences i have ever had in all of myshort life..  They were frozen so i guess that did make it easier butstill weird as all hell..  Each possum was placed on the log of deathand expertly hacked in half with just a few swings of the axe and itdidnt take long for the smell to hit me i can tell you!!!  The clawswere a bit tricky to get at as it is very difficult to get a possum todie with his/her paws stretched out but i managed it and those clawswere soon scavenged by the various small meat eating animals that werepatiently waiting in the bushes next to me!!! ha ha..The next day at about 5, the dogs were served their meal of half apossum each - front or back was the option so i decided to give thebigger dogs the back and smaller ones the front!  Oh and what i didntmention is that due to the smell (that i anticipated after 24 hours outof the freezer) i distributed the "poss" and the "ums" with tissuepaper hanging out of each nostril!!!I hope you enjoyed my little story, i tried to make it as readable aspossible, sorry about the obvious gramatical errors but i can tell you- it was as funny to do and to right as it is to read, i am nearly intears!!!!So that is pretty much the end of my farm experience here at Flea Bay although i will be around for another week, it has been a real eye opener and i now cant wait to start my next challenge; Lift operator for Porters.. :)Hope you are all happy and well and no doubt i will speak to some of you in near future..The wanderer. x

Bon blinkin jour...Well since i last typed....  I think i mentioned that i was going to work on a penguin reserve..  Well last saturday i embarked on my first hitch hiking mission..  It was sooo fun.  Me and chris - a guy i met at the hostel - rocked out the hostel with a sign that i had made earlier and set off for the main road out of town.  We were both excited about this trip because neither of us had every hitch hiked before.  Wasnt really sure how it was all gonna work out but i knew it would be fine as i had heard how easy it was in this country..Once we got to the main drag out of christchurch we got our first ride...!  She took us to a place where we were guaranteed to get a lift to Akaroa.  The lady who picked us up runs another farm stay just outside of christchurch so i guess she was very used to scummy backpackers bumming lifts and wanting to sleep and eat for free..  The journey was short but we were on the right track..  We were only there for about 5 mins when the sign worked for a second time.. :)  This kind lady was picking up her son from football and offered to take us as far as Tai Tapu which was about 40 mins away from our destination, RESULT.. She was english actually so when 2 Bristol boys (oh yeah forgot to mention that bit) rocked into her 4 wheel drive she felt reeet at home.. ha haSo we were nearly there and still buzzing..  We were dropped at a truck stop in Tai Tapu and were only there for 10 mins as a fellow backpackers picked us up in his new motor..!  RIPPA..  This guy was from oxford and had just picked up his new subaru legacy so was taking it for a spin to Akaroa so we joined him for the trip.. We spent quite a bit of time with him that day actually, quality guy here to work in NZ for a year..Anywho....  We got picked up by Shireen (farm owner) and wisked off over the hills to a secluded inlet called Flea Bay.  This is home to a wild population of penguins that is the largest in Australasia..  We were staying on a working farm in our own hut out of the way.  Meals and bed is free and all we had to do was work 4 hours a day.  Work consisted (consists - expalin later) of either cleaning stuff, helping build an 19th century clay house, gekko spotting as part of a research program in the area, preditor trap laying to keep the penguins safe from stoats, ferral cats and ferrets...  The list doesnt stop there, it could be anything that needed doing.  Soo great to be out in the country side amonst mother nature..This brings me up to date.... Well not quite.  I am now back in christchurch as shireen has to attend a conservation meeting at 3 plus chris has to get to work tonight in a pizza joint in town so i guess thats the end to that little adveture as a twosome...  My adventure continues though...  I am staying at the farm for another month as it is a great way not to spend money plus i get lots more life experience in the outdoors.  I am on sheep shearing duties tomorrow, well i am part of the team effort though anyway so cant wait for that plus who knows what i could be doing in the coming weeks... Here is a list of possibilities...  Shooting, quad biking (well sort of), kayaking, lots of walking, swimming, seal watching etc...  Oh and i didnt metion that i will eating like a king as i get three 3 great meals a day plus drink of an eve..!  God i'm good, how do i do it - i guess by just being lucky old me..JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - JOB NEWS - As you all know, my whole reason for coming out here was to work the ski season..  Why are you working on a farm then you d+"k head!?  Let me tell you what is happening..  Well i had an interview last week and i have just found out that i got the job.. !!!  efljwnljnv;ws;kwfnwfkm COME OOOOOOON...  90 applicants, 9 positions, one of them mine..  I am so happy, i cant even believe how to put it down into words...  I start around the 15th June so why not live on a farm for free, eating like a king and having penguins as neighbours hey!  I AM ONCE AGAIN LIVIN THE DREAM..On that note, smiling steve is gunna log T fook out..  Massive hello to everyone plus if anyone see's rosie in the near future please tel her and her mum that i have been trying to ring but due to my remote living situation i have been struggling.. Hi all..Ok, firstly a massive thank you to all those special people who came out for my leaving drinks, it was fantastic to see you all and i do believe the night was a success.. :)  Sorry if i missed saying hello/goodbye to anyone in the short time that i was back in the UK, no offence and all that i just cannot help being popular.. ha haHad a great time in London staying with Dan and Amy, once again they were perfect hosts and i cant thank you both enough for putting lil old me up so a massive shout out to you guys..  So i finally arrived to NZ on the 3rd completly recked from my trip in a right old mess!!  I have never felt so tired in all of my short life.  Picked a hostel in christchurch, bought a sim card for me phone and crashed from about 1.30pm til about 9am on the 4th!!!  I was sweet as a nut after all that sleep so i have been lucky to get over the heavy head so quickly..  Met some great people already and have been having a cool time just walking the streets of christchurch and spending as little of my dwindling pot as i can.  Yes, i am officially skint but i guess i knew it wasnt gonna be like my last trip, i left with 290 quid so what could i really expect.  Living here is expensive as but cheap meals are available if your willing to shop on the cheap and cook yourself.My little money saving scheme will be well under way come saturday as i am heading off to volunteer for a few weeks at Penguin rescue center... :)  Bed and board is free and i have to pay nothing up front so cant wait for that..  Gonna hitch hike there as well to save a few more pennies so the plan is slowly coming together.  I think i will be doing all sorts of things once i am there, i have been told there are preditor traps to lay to protect the penguins, paths to lay, houses to renovate etc etc so i dont think i will be bored...I have my first interview to get a job on the slopes in about 30 mins so will make this mail short, looking forward to getting infront of them as i know i can warm them to my talents and personality..  Bring it on..  Have a second interview maybe tomorrow but not sure at the mo..So i will leave it there for now, i am alive and well and will speak to you all again soon..Steve x
