Koahsiung, TW.02, Taiwan

After getting back from Thailand we headed to Koahsiung to check out the World Games. The first night we went out for dinner at Smokey Joe's and then headed to a pub. Mom, the crazy party animal that she is kept us out till 4:30am. Needless to say we all had a little bit of a sleep in the next day. Then we headed out to see some Korfball. Sort of like European Handball, the players throw the ball back and forth to each other. The ball looked like a soccer ball but apparently wasn't. The players went down the court and threw the ball into a basket with no back board to get a point. The neat thing, I thought was that each side of the court had set players so when the action moved across the line into the other zone it was picked up by the other half of each time. We watched the Netherlands clobber Australia. We were trying to go see the tug of war and ended up having a really nice walk along the water front. No one seemed to hear about the tug of war, or understand what we were saying so after that we hopped into a cab and headed back towards the main part of the city. We did some public transpo to take us to an Indian place. We got caught in traffic by an insane fireworks display. The one picture shows the piles of residue from the fireworks.The next night we went out to the Balcony for Mom's Birthday! We kept it to a small crowd, mostly the girls, Erin, Theresa, Sam and myself. We brought a new teacher along and had our friend Craig join us. We had a fantastic meal of Taiwanese food and then cake which thankfully turned out to be a good. Many of the cakes look good but don't always taste that way.And finally, Mom had been riding with me just about every day on the scooter so we needed a picture of that. She and I took the scooter out to a lower traffic area the one day and Mom played around and drove it a bit on her own. I was pretty impressed and happy that she wanted to try it out. As most of you know we just had a couple more days in Chiayi before going home. Mom went swimming quite a bit at the apartment and took walks down to the park. We went out to eat and saw some of my friends and packed up stuff in the apt. Then on Thursday [the 23rd] we made our way back up to the airport and arrived in Canada on Friday July 24th at around 6:30am.

Phuket, Thailand

We watched a cooking demonstration. Saw a rubber tree and had a run through of how plastic is made. Plastic is a very big export in Thailand. We saw a show with some Baby Elephants. The elephants painted, hit golf balls, played the harmonica and danced. They were so cute!! We then bought a fruit basket so we could feed them. Later we met some of the older elephants and went on a little trek on the back of one. Very agile but they sway A LOT! We climbed on a water buffalo and then went on a short cart ride. We watched a monkey twist off some coconuts. Apparently some monkeys can twist off 800 a day. We then went back to the hotel to get ready for our evening show Fantasea.

Bangkok, Thailand

On our first night we went to a Cabaret night in our Hotel. The next day we took a boat ride to the floating market to do some shopping. We saw a wood working shop. We then went for lunch near the River Kwai. After lunch we walked over the bridge over River Kwai. From the bridge we went to the memorial cemetery. Buried there were the people who died building the Death Railway. They ranged from Thailand military to P.O.W. from a few countries. We then went to the J E A T H museum which has pictures and clippings of the conditions of the concentration camps in Thailand. From there we had a couple hours of driving before the hotel. We then relaxed in the hotel room.Our third and final day [half day] in Bangkok we spent relaxing and poking at a nearby mall.

Chiai, T'ai-wan, Taiwan

Mom arrived on Friday at about 5:30am. We left the airport by shuttle bus to the high speed train station. We took a high speed train which travels around 250 km/h to Chiayi and a cab straight to the apartment. First we got some breakfast at the Orange Kitchen, yummy bagels. Then we took naps. After that we woke up, stopped in quickly at my school and then headed to the Freen. We were joined by Erin and Sam. We shared a banana-mango smoothie and had hamburgers. Later, after another nap I'm sure, we headed to June's so Mom could meet some of the foreigners here. Saturday. We went shopping at Carrefour and picked up some regular items like cereal and fruit. I stopped for a moment and sampled some beer *blah*. I left Mom for a nap and I went out shopping for some fireworks. We went to a BBQ later in the evening. There were quite a few people there. We had some awesome chicken sandwiches and set off the fireworks I got and had a little singing of the national anthem. It got dark quite quickly so I didn't end up getting photos.Sunday we met Dorothy for tea and I rushed off to claim Theresa's purse at the police station as it was left behind at the BBQ. Then we got ready at home and headed up into the mountains with Jack. We went a short trip down a path that would have led to a water fall but it was getting dark and starting to rain. The path is known for having over a thousand steps. The translation for the Taiwanese name is something like 10,000 stairs. As we came back into town we made some dinner plans and headed to a really cool place. There's a large coi pond in the middle of this restaurant which is actually open to the night sky. There was a lady playing a traditional Chinese instrument as we arrived, unfortunately she was gone before we left. We enjoyed a nice dinner.Monday was making travel plans and lunch with Ginny [my boss] and her family. We went to a Japanese style restaurant and Mom had some tasty crab meat and some other seafood.We're going to be heading out of Chiayi soon, I might not be able to update for a week or so.

Two of the foreigners in Chiayi had a large wedding reception. Due to the strange laws restricting the English they got officially married a month later in Hong Kong. Maria would have had to go back to England and bring proof that she was not currently married. Stephane is Canadian and just had to state that he wasn't married before. It was a large party, fantastic food. The Money $hot Horns played. It was a great time! I was really happy to have gone, they are amazing people!

So my friend from Ottawa, Mike, ended up in Taipei for about 3 days on business. I managed to get out there and do a little sight seeing with him. This is mostly of us in Taipei 101 and a couple of evening shots. We started out by wandering around the tower then we took to the shops around it. Mike managed to haggle a price at a dept store [very quickly actually]. We ate at a Japanese style place. Later we headed to the Brass Monkey where we bumped into Ada, who happens to be a friend of a friend [Robert] from Chiayi whom I'd met over Christmas.

We all headed out for dinner at the Balcony to celebrate Theresa's birthday! I personally did not have the snails but I thought it made for an interesting picture. We had kung pow chicken, spicy tofu, steamed cabbage, rice, a couple beef dishes and I think at least one more green veggie dish. The food there is very good! We finished off with some cake and the traditional little song for Theresa!
