Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala

Hi everyone!

All is well here. Tomorrow is my last day of class and I am sad to say I am not impressed. I was hoping for a intensive week-long review of spanish but I really got thrown into an existing class so I spent the whole week practicing el preterio imperfecto. A lot of time spent for not much review. The house I am staying at is great. I moved rooms so I am on my own on the top floor with an incredible view. I have to go outside to get to the bathroom though which is a little strange. The food is decent but it is a little hard to work around the schedule of the family. Sometimes I don´t want to eat at 7:30.

I am trying to take lots of pictures but I am also enjoying being somewhat disconnected from the modern world. I climbed a mountin today and got some great shots. I also saw one of the local volcanos blow off a little steam! Friday is the annual festival for Antigua so that should be great, then I am off to Utila for some diving.

Will write again soon!

Love,
Sarah
Chichicastenango, Western Highlands, Guatemala

Hola mis amigos,

Well, the last couple of days have been an adventure. I spent most of Saturday wandering around Antigua and crashed early. Yesterday I went to the largest market in Latin America which is held every Sunday in Chichicastenango. Try saying that fast three times! It was a 3 hour bus ride there and the market was packed when we arrived at 10am. While it was quite a sight, I really don´t like crowds and it was so packed that people were literally pushing on my back to move through the crowd. There were a lot of hard sells and even more people begging. I was supposed to meet up with Jessica but it turns out she didn´t go to the market yesterday. My plans to travel back together fell through and I was almost stranded in ChiChi because all of the shuttles had left for Antigua. I ended up finally finding one filled with lots of "colorful" locals. For the ENTIRE 3 hour ride they sang at the top of their lungs. Antigua was the most welcome sight I have seen in a while. I went out for great mexican food as a treat when I got back. Today was my first day of class but more about that later...I have a date to try and meet up with Jessica again!

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala

Hi Everyone,

Well, I finally made it to Antigua. Today seems like it has lasted forever. The flight down was good but the security lines at Miami International were so long I almost missed my flight. The family I am staying with seems great. There are two other students staying in the house but they leave tomorrow. I am sure someone will take there place. I am off to the ChiChi market early tomorrow morning. It is the largest market in the whole country and happens every Sunday. I will upload pictures soon, it is incredibly beautiful here. It has rained most of the day so I haven´t seen as much as I would like but the town does seem very small. Antigua has been destroyed by earthquakes on multiple occasions so there are some amazing ruins mixed in the middle of the city. I hope all is well with everyone back home.

Love, Sarah
Miami, Florida, United States

Ugh, writing this on 2.5 hours sleep while I wait for the airport shuttle. Major disaster was averted yesterday when I got to the airport and realized that I had left my credit cards at home. $70 later I made it back to the airport 10 minutes before my flight was supposed to leave. As I ran to the gate I learned the flight had been delayed for 45min. I was just glad I made it. Little did I know, I would have to sit on the plane on the ground for more than two hours. As we were about to take off a warning light went off in the cabin. We went back to the gate, only to be told we couldn't actually attach the walkway because there was lightning in the area. Almost 3 hours later we were off. I made it to my hotel at 3am, took a really expensive nap, and now I am on my way! I can't wait to finally be there. Thanks for all of your support everyone!

Love, Sarah
Miami, Florida, United States

Taking off today to spend the night in Miami (Without Jessica as planned!). Decided to forgo the night on the airport floor and I am staying in the chic Miami Wyndham Airport Hotel. Truth is that this will probably be the nicest place I stay for the next two weeks. My plans are finally falling into place and I have made reservations for diving. I promise this will get more interesting as the trip goes on and I can't wait to add pictures!

Much Love,
Sarah
Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Hi Everyone,

I decided to start this a bit early in hopes of getting any last minute suggestions. I am finalizing my plans and after a bit of last minute schedule shuffling I think I am about all set. For all of you who I know who have visited this area, what do I have to see? What is the one thing you wish you had known before you went? Where would you skip if you went back? I am off to Miami to spend the night on Friday then on to Antigua on Saturday morning!

Much Love,
Sarah
