Glasgow, United Kingdom

Flew Ryan Air to Glasgow-Prestwick airport. We arranged to rent a van from www.dchscotland.co.uk/. We were very happy with both the service. The van was a 7-seater Renault Espace. That particular make and model would not be first choice for our drivers (tight gears and some handling complaints) but it ran smoothly and reliably and got us from place to place.

We had to wait for a bit in the airport--7-seater van would not be available until 1400. My compliments to DCH Scotland. They sent a representative over to meet us when we landed. He brought a sedan with the hope that would work for us. Too small for our luggage. In the end we're glad we waited for the van. We spent a lot of time on the road. Word of caution--if you are considering a similar trip and actually have 7 passengers you will need a roof box for your luggage--if if you all travel light.

Barry was behind the wheel for our drive from Glasgow to Inverness. It took much longer than expected (4 1/2 hours) partially because we had estimated driving distances from Glasgow and the airport is actually much farther south and partially because of the weather--lots of snow falling, expecially in the mountains.
Yakutat, Alaska, United States

Seventy-five miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, the Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. It has been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895.
