Interlaken, Switzerland

We have been staying in Interlaken since Friday night, November 14th. On Monday, November 17th, we went Canyon Jumping in the Swiss Alps. It was through a company called Alpine Raft. We jumped off a platform and free fell 150 feet and then swung 10-12 feet above the canyon floor at 75-80 miles per hour. It was such a thrill. I am so glad that I did it. I can't even explain the experience. I was really excited and not even nervous until I was all hooked up to the rope and the guy set down the rope and stepped to the side and said, "Whenever you're ready." I kind of tensed up and then I just ran off the platform. It was like I didn't even realize what was happening until I got half way across the canyon. My adrenaline was pumping so fast that when I grabbed the rope to pull myself over to the ladder, my arms were shaking. It was an unforgettable experience.We also spent some time walking around Interlaken and I got a Swiss Army Knife with my name engraved on it. We went to Lucerne for a day too. It was really foggy the day we were in Lucerne, so that was kind of disappointing. But, we were able to use our Eurail to take boat ride on Lake Lucerne. That was really relaxing, but cold. I love Switzerland and think that it would be fun to go back to a little earlier in the fog when it isn't so cold.

Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium

Quaint little town with a cute downtown shopping area. I loved it and hope to go back to spend more time there if I come back to Europe someday. We didn't get to eat any waffles though :( But I did get cute boots! All we really had time to do was shop on Saturday afternoon and then go to a little bakery Sunday morning before training back to Vienna./ Which, by the way, the Eurail makes no sense..it routed us back to Zurich, Switzerland and then to Vienna.

Paris, Île-de-France, France

Arc de Triumph, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, and the LouvreSecond time in Paris..I felt like I had this city down. Well, except when we took the wrong metro lines a couple times when we were trying to get to Notre Dame..but hey, Paris is a big city. It was nice to get to spend one more day in Paris. The first time we were here on our first ten day, we didn't get a chance to get to the Arc de Triumph or Notre Dame. After seeing the inside of Notre Dame, I really want to watch the Hunchback of Notre Dame. We went to the Arc de Triumph to see the eternal flame under the arc that is on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. But when we finally figured out how to get under the arc without running across the crazy roundabout that circles the monument, we found out the eternal flame is not so eternal after all. It was being cleaned so the flame was out. But then we waited for the cleaning to be finished and saw that the re-liting of the flame was really lame. All they did was use a little lighter and it was so informal.Then we went to the Eiffel Tower again..I never get tired of the Eiffel Tower..and afterwards we went back to the Louvre and spent a couple of hours there. Our train to Brugge didn't leave until 6:30 the next morning..so long story short-we spent the night being kicked out of place after place. We were so thankful to get on the train to Brugge the next morning.

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands

Beautiful Barcelona weather, a day on the beach, and shopping on La Rambla.It couldn't really top canyon jumping..but it was a lot warmer. We took a really lame walking tour of Barcelona on Wednesday morning. There was a huge protest going on because Nissan laid off 1,000 workers or something like that. So they were walking through the streets of Barcelona blowing whistles and chanting things in Spanish that we couldn't understand. We wanted to see a flamenco dance or the famous music and light show at the fountain in Barcelona. But both of these only happen on weekends. So, we didn't get to go. But we did run into some of the other people from our group. Emily, Holly, and Jerrica happened to be walking down La Rambla at the same time that we were on Wednesday night. Jerrica and I got churros and hot chocolate..it was so good. Their hostel was on the beach, so on Thursday we met up with them to spend the day on the beach. It was beautiful..the wind was a little cold, but it was nice to just spend the day relaxing on the beach. We Thursday night to take an overnight train to Paris.

Fussen, Germany

We saw the castle that Walt Disney used as an inspiration to create the Disney Castle. The castle is called Schloss Neuschwanstein. It is set on on a hill amidst the snow capped mountains. It was so cold, but it was really pretty. Mary, Heather, and I took a carriage ride up to the top of the hill. We were on the carriage with 5 Chinese people. Mary and Heather were making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches..the Chinese man thought that was pretty funny. He also thought we were in middle school..it was an interesting carriage ride.  But we got to the top of the hill and waited for our tour of the inside of the castle to begin. The inside was a disappointment compared to the outside of the castle. The inside of the castle was only half completed because the King Ludwig of Bavaria died. The coolest part of the interior was that there was a cave made out of plaster. It just connected two rooms and there was a little table and chairs by a window looking out over the valley. And we were back on the train for another 6 hours to get to SWITZERLAND!!!

Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Italy

Friday morning we were free to go on individual travel. Jerica, Amanda, Liz, Emily, and I took the train to Cinque Terre on Italy's west coast. We planned to stop in Pisa and visit the Leaning Tower along the way..but because of  train delays, we didnt get a chance to do that. Cinque Terre is composed of 5 small villages all along the coast. There are hiking trails between each village along with trains that will take you to each one. We stayed in the first village, Riomaggiore. We went out to a cliff over the ocean on Friday night and just sat and enjoyed the view. We did some singing and just had a really relaxing night and then went to bed early. We got up Saturday morning at 6:30 to go back to the cliff and watch the sunset. What a great way to start the day. The weather on Saturday was sunny and about 60. It was beautiful. Liz, Emily, and I took a train to the 5th village, Monterosso, and walked around the village for a little while. We bought some beach towels and just laid by the ocean all afternoon. It was so relaxing. I wish I could have spent more time here so I could have done some hiking and seen all five of the villages. So far, this is the number one place that I've been this semester that I want to come back to. It would make a great relaxing vacation and you could take trips to other Italian cities. We had to leave Saturday night around 6 to get back to Florence to catch a night train to Vienna.

Wednesday morning we were off to Venice. It was about 3 1/2 hours on the train from Florence. We spent Wednesday afternoon and Thursday in the city.
