Florence, Tuscany, Italy

Up and into town for a day of sightseeing.  A short walk down the hill and first stop is the Ponte Veccio, famous bridge.  Packed with people, but fantastic looking at all the goldsmiths and jewelry on the bridge.  Continued on to the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), and Giotto's belltower.  Fantastic buildings in 3 different colours of marble.  Decided to do the long queue to climb the dome, had a picnic lunch while waiting in line!  Climbed the 500 odd steps to the top for fantastic panoramic views over the city and the surrounding hills.  Back down and onto the the Basillica de Santa Croce which has the tombs of Michealangelo, Galilieo and many others.  Back toward the town centre and into the Ufizzi gallery, with artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Caravaggio to name a few.  Fantastic.  After a long and overwhelming day, walked back to a restaurant near camp and had a delicious meal - managed to order in Italian!  What a great day . . .

Landed in Melbourne on schedule at about 6am our time, and breezed through customs, collecting our luggage on two trolleys. Had about a 4 hour wait for the last flight back to Launceston, so grabbed a bite to eat (breakfast lunch or tea?). Checked in to our domestic flight - luggage wasn't overweight, much to my surprise! Short 50min flight to Launceston to be met by Don and Nat and the Prado to transport us home. Good old Tassie looked a little sleepy compared to the hustle and bustle of the last 8 weeks! Home to Pengali Place about 2:30 - the place looked strangely familiar . .The end to our fantastic European Adventure. Hmmm I wonder where we could go next? . .

What a great way to go grocery shopping.  Another day cruising on Chris's boat (the Lucy Jane) on the Greater Ouse River.  Left the mooring about 11 and cruised down the river through a couple of locks to Huntingdon, birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and Samuel Peyps.  Moored on the river bank with the mooring spikes, and walked into town.  Into Marks and Spencers food section (Michelle's favourite shop!) where we all chose individual meals for tea!  Had a picnic lunch by the river, then back cruising, this time with Henry and then Tom at the helm.  Into the lock at Godmanchester (yes that's a real place!), where we filled the lock to go upstream.  Lock gate wouldn't open to let us out (bl**dy electronics), so had to empty then fill it again, and it worked this time.  Back to Cambridge about 6 after a great day.  Gourmet tea and the ubiquitous bottle (or 2) of wine.  Not looking forward to packing up but . . . .

Leaving the Norht this morning, decided to head for York. Had a picnic lunch by the river, and then on to visit the Jorvick Viking Centre, built around the remains of a Viking village from 800AD. Very interesting place - boys especially liked the man's skeleton with all the sword wounds! Back to Chris and Maureen's for tea . . .

Match day, and the geordies were out in force! Uncle had managed to get 4 great seats to the football at Newcastle United's home ground (St. James' Park), so we headed to the merchandising shop early to get 'kitted up'! Resplendent in our Newcastle gear, we went to the game whilst the girls did a bit of shopping and sightseeing. A great atmosphere at the game (plenty of singing etc) but a disappointing result as the lads were beaten 2-1 by Hull City. After the game we all congregated back at the aprtment for tea where cousin Nicola and her boyfriend Johnny met us also. A great evening of chatting ensued . . .

A day of visiting the home country, and the Northern rellies. Drove to Amble following Chris as tour guide. Visited Aunty Enid for a cup of tea. Walked around Amble, looking at all the places I lived when I was born 'till 2 yo (and emigrating to Oz). 'Quaint' little village and pretty dockside, although the weather was 'brisk'. Over to Alnwick with Aunty in tow - saw Alnwick Castle and the town centre. Bamborough castle next, with the view out to Holy Island through the rain squalls. On to Seahouses for some of the best fish n chips I've ever had (complete with mushy peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea!). Back to Aunty's for a glass of champers and some cake before saying outr goodbyes and heading back to Newcastle. Moved camp to Chris' apartment coz there was plenty of room . . .
