As some of you may have heard, the trip came to a quick end today. I woke up to the news. The elders in the group feared the horizon so we kept heading east. It was a long quiet ride. I think we were all bummed that it was over but it was a good trip. We were able to have some fun and see some very interesting things. Although the memorial isn't close to being finished, it is very impressive. Actually, the Presidents of Rushmore would all fit inside of the head of the Crazy Horse Memorial. It is massive. It's also all privately funded. They turned down 10 million dollars in federal money on a couple of occasions. This is also part of the reason that it is taking so long to complete. They have been working on it for 60 years and still have a very long way to go.

     We actually headed east to Wall Drug rather than west to Little Bighorn. Apparently, these "Hearty Minnesotans" heard snow was in the forecast and wanted to head for cover.      After a slight delay getting in to the hotel we were set to see Wall Drug. I didn't know much about it but had heard of it quite a bit. Basically it is a mini mall. It had quite a few stores, a cafe, and even a chapel just to name a few. The walls were covered with pictures and articles that detailed the history. Howard was able to find a beautiful little sculpture that he was looking for and dad found some shirts. We probably could have spent more time there but we had a couple of tired out travelers.      Make sure you check out the pics and vids on the last few entries because that's where the best stuff is.      I don't know what the plan is tomorrow because it's dependent on the whether  but I'll let you know.

     This one I'm sure you all know about. I ended up doing this on my own since there is a little bit of an uphill walk to get to the viewing area. It was very impressive and the surrounding area is really beautiful. One thing that I didn't know was even there was the amplitheatre. I haven't looked up what kind of performances they have there but I'm very curious. Maybe someone reading knows.

Our first few stops today were all in the same area so I'll just keep the same map pin.     The first stop actually was just a drive through but it was great. Custer State Park was very nice. After driving through the plains for the last couple of days it was nice to see a change in the terrain. Rolling hills, evergreens and the occasional lake were all beautiful but the highlight of the ride were the animals. Really nothing I could write could match the pictures so I'll let you see them.

Wounded Knee, South Dakota, United States

     Todays stops were quite depressing. That's really the best way I could describe it.      The first stop was at Wounded Knee which is the cemetery where 300 Sioux who were killed by American soldiers were buried. They were killed at a creek nearby and buried here. Of the 300, approximately 75% were women and children. I was informed but still surprised by how rundown it was. If I had been driving by, I would not have realized I was driving by Wounded Knee. Dad and Howard both bought dream catchers made by a local.    As we left Wounded Knee, we passed through Pine Ridge Reservation. Pine Ridge is in the poorest county in the country. Approximately 4,000 annual household income with 80% unemployment. The homes were almost all trailers and it was difficult to tell which were lived in and which weren't. The area was filled with broken down vehicles that had been stripped for parts while people seemed to walk everywhere because they didn't have any working cars.

Our next stop was Fort Robinson. We stopped in Chadron, ate, got a room and got back on the road. We went to Fort Rob to see the marker for where Crazy Horse died.      Much of today was driving. While on the road we got a little history as we went. Did you know that the largest mass execution in the U.S. occured in Minnesota? Mankato to be exact. 300 native americans were set to be executed but an episcopal bishop by the name of Whipple urged President Lincoln to take action. According to history books, Lincoln brought the number down to between 30 and 40 but I think they didn't execute all 300 people just to demonstrate that "Minnesota Nice".      Another little tidbit and excuse the poor translation. Minnetonka. Minne=water. Tonka=holy. Rough translation is holy water.      Polka was another topic of conversation. Apparently, it was very popular back in the day. Fr. Howard said that the retreats are generally all old ladies and they love when he performs for them. Ahem.      As I heard dad tell ALL of you, it did take awhile for him to spot an indian. He did spot plenty of dopey white kids though. We stopped at St. Joseph's Indian School & Akta Lakota Museum and Culture Center. We didn't actually go in the school but if you're interested go to stjo.org. The museum depicted how the Indians went about their daily lives and the relationship with nature. Everything has it's own spirit. The grass, trees, streams, and animals.       Bpppppp. OK. I know some of you are checking in just for the bloopers so I'll give you some. First, there were lots and lots of bpppppps. I've been given the responsibility of listening for dad's phone because he can't hear it. Even when it's in his vest pocket. On FULL blast. He messed up the gift we gave him for his phone so I have to look at it. In the meantime, he's using an earpiece he connects to the phone. Somehow he got it tangled up with the seatbelt and barely made it out for lunch. Yes, he needed help getting untangled. He now knows Le Sueur wasn't named by the indians. I'm glad he asked. To his credit, when I tried to get a nap in he didn't try to wake me. He did let Howard know how much he'd like me to wake up by yelling,"I REALLY WISH JOHN WOULD WAKE UP TO SEE ALL THIS SNOW" to Howard in the backseat. That's all I've got as we sit here on the MissourA river. More to come. Hopefully tommorow.

Hi this is Jill starting off the first blog entry for the trip. Thanks to Sallyjawea for providing some of the details....(we care about accuracy....this is not a tabloid)Fr. Howard picked up Dad and John and they were on the road around 9:00. Fr. Howard was a little early (Dad loves that and that is something that we can't always provide) so they were able to visit a little before they left. Sallyjawea gleaned two particularly interesting bits of information from their conversation. (Tam said Mom got a picture before they left so hopefully we can post it tonight)1. Mdewakanto means Mystic Lake2. Shakopee means Little SixSounded like she was going to do a little research on that.Dad called a little later to get the blog started. He is stepping into character referring to themselves as Lewis and Clark. John is going to try to post tonight. Can't wait to hear the updates. I am having a lazy day after all the travel and have been checking out some of the history and am jealous that I am not there.
