Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, United States

Hey everyone -

Well, it's been an interesting couple of days. We spent the first day on the ship, which didn't leave the dock until 8:00 pm. We had a nice dinner, but then things were a little bouncy the first night. Fortunately, that wasn't too much of a problem. On Monday, we woke up about 6:00 am and were in Prince William Sound. I got some really great shots of some glaciers and some wildlife, which i will upload later. After lunch, I had a swedish massage in their spa, which was really nice. I've never done that before.

We then headed out to sea. Let me tell you, that has been an adventure. Here you have me, the old Navy salt, and Tony, the guy who gets motion sickness really easy. Guess who gets sick - ME! I spent most of yesterday afternoon and last night in bed, when I wasn't throwing up. We had 12-18 foot seas and boat was rocking and pitching so hard sometimes you couldn't stand up. I have the coolest video of the ships pool. There were whitecaps on it, and the water was sloshing all over the place.
Anyway, things are better today and we will be entering glacier bay this morning. Hopefully the clouds will break and we will get to see some of the sights. We'll check in again soon!
Tracey and Tony
Anchorage, Alaska, United States

We made it back to Anchorage. The sun was setting and it was a good flight. There were a bunch of people starting their vacations on our flight and they were all so excited to land and get started. Made me think of how excited I was getting ready for our trip. I thought we had a really great time, and it was nice to see Tony relax and enjoy himself. Now the drive home.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Well, we're finally back on land and made it to Vancouver. We were bussed from the ship terminal to the airport, and had several hours to wait. Vancouver is much larger than I thought and seemed like a reasonable city. Its very diverse. Anyway, we will catch a flight home and then be back to the grind.
Seward, Alaska, United States

Hey everyone -

I am playing catch up on entries, and wanted to tell you more about our train trip. After we got home last night, we got up at 3:00 to load up and drive to the airport. We left the truck there, then took a cab to the train station in Anchorage. From there we boarded the train at 6:30 am. It was a really great ride down to Seward, taking about 4 hours. We were able to see areas of the Kenai Peninsula you are only able to see from the train because parts of the train route are not accessible by road. We arrived around 11:30 pm, then walked about a half mile to the ship. Photos to come!

Tracey and Tony
Kasilof, Alaska, United States

Hey everyone -

Well, we went on our fishing trip. Unfortunately, summer has come late to Alaska and the kings are not running yet, so we came home without a king salmon. Tony did catch a really nice steelhead trout. You should be able to see it here. I don't feel so bad, though. There were tons on people on that river and no one was catching anything. We are going again in about a month, and our guide thinks the runs will be much better then. Also, check out the video, and click on "the funky boat dock" to read a story about this thing. Well, off to bed. We have to get up at 3:15 am to get out of here in time to drop the truck off at the airport and get to the train station in time to start our trip! Talk to you soon!

Tracey
Ketchikan, Alaska, United States

Hey everyone -

Today was another great day. We slept in and docked in Ketchikan around 2:00 in the afternoon. Tony and I have taken to sitting out on the fantail of the ship when it sails. It is so nice, the sun is out, we see whales and beautiful scenery. We are having a really great time.

We went into town and did a little shopping (actually, I did the shopping while Tony sat outside. Funny how all those shops had benches outside with men sitting on them!). We then boarded a bus for a brief tour of the city and then went to a totem pole park. It was neat to see all of the Tlingit and Haida totems and hear about their stories and history. We are now back on the ship, having just eaten dinner. Last night we sat with 2 of the cutist couples. One couple was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and the other their 54th. They were both from Pennsylvania and I was the only one sitting at the table that wasn't from PA and wasn't Italian!. It was quite funny to see Tony sitting there with those two Italian fellas. He was actually quite chatty for a change. It was also formal night and we got all dressed up and had our pictures taken. I will have to put that on here as welll when we get back. We are headed out to sea tonight and will be at sea until we dock in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada Sunday morning. Talk to you all when we get back!
Tony and Tracey
Juneau, Alaska, United States

What a wonderful day! The day started early. After breakfast we boarded a tour bus and headed to Mendenhall Glacier. I had read that they had a book there of all the Mendenhalls who had visited, so when we got there, I asked about it. When they found out I was a Mendenhall, they made this annoucement letting everyone in the place know that a Mendenhall was there! I had no idea this place was such a huge tourist attraction. I can see why. There are no words to describe this thing, how massive and impressive it is. I hope the photos will do it some justice, but I can't see how. You really have to see it.

After that, we boarded the bus again and headed for a trip out into the straight on a whale watching expedition. Keep in mind that Juneau is in a rainforest and gets about 250 days of rain a year. The clouds parted and our trip was absolutely gorgeous. And can you believe, we saw so much wildlife. We saw a pod of Orcas (killer whales) that were feeding with porpoises. The porpoises followed our boat just about everywhere we went. They were so fast. Then we saw humpback whales! I have always wanted to see them and now I can say that I have. Tony and I got some really great photos. I can't wait to put them on my computer at home. We also saw many eagles and stellar sea lions. It was a great day.
Tony and Tracey
Tony and I went ashore and met up with a photo guide who took us to some really great picture spots and showed us how to take great outdoor photos. We then boarded a ferry for a 40 minute ride to Skagway. We saw a beautiful waterfall, toured a brothel museum (Tony loved that) and did some shopping and ate dinner. All in all a good day. More to come and photos when we return.

Tony and Tracey
