Seattle, Washington, United States

The sooner im out of these american airports the better. Getting on the flight i had the niciest security guy at the bag check, friendly and chatty. An hour away i still had the green form from the last time which i was told was good til june so i dont have to fil it in again. Arriving at the desk Dickhead informs i have to fill out a new one so i do since dickhead was busy i went to the fella next to him who tell the one i have is fine i just have to leave by this date, no shit fucker. Im keeping it cool at this stage. Im last through the customs and going for my bag and a cop is waiting there. An Dickhead eile. I go for a the bag and go to leave when i hear the american twang "excuse me sir" He asks for the passport where im coming from, where im going, what do i do etc. He says ok and i go to leave when he says were just going to have a look through your bag there before you head off. Oh might cha indeed.
Over at this covere belt he has to start up this computer and he gives me this booklet about immigration which i straight away put aside. The same question again and again as if to catch me out. He could of came up with harder one. He couldn't get his head around that i have being travelling 17 months and how was i funding this trip and was i going to work in america. You'd swear he had never seen a backpacker before. Im blaiming the bag i got from Dad its not exactly a backpack. After he healed everything out of the bag he was satisfied and trying to be friendly an dickhead eile said "you pack them back in there and we'll get you out of here".
Just as i was about to head off he hit me with another onslought of question and jesus i hate pointless question. Again he was satisfied and i was on my way.
I suppose i should be glad a full cavity search wasn't carried out.
Fuckin american airports.
Banff, Alberta, Canada

Hi all
Got into Banff for a week skiing. I got all my gear from the parents and i dont know if its a good thing or not. The bag is massive and its on shagging wheel not ideal for backpacking but at least i got to get rid of a bag that i had being lugging around since LaPaz Bolivia. It coming to the end of the season here so i was expecting much but the snow was fairly good with fresh dumps every second day. I got up there the first day and getting used to the skies after so long was hard especially since i think the boots where too big. My first attempt of coming down a black was only a drop off which i had to cross to get to more slopes which ended up with me going head first into the bank. Im glad i had the helmet cause it was soure even with it on.
The following day i went out with Holly an Australian girl form Melbourne. She was a border but i didnt hold that against her she was good company. That day we went to Lake Louise which was a really good mountain with really long runs. The next day out was with two more bleedin border out of the room. They were good enough craic and after spend the morning on the skies i did the imortal sin and swap with Richie and like a pig to shit i was flying down the slopes straight away.
On the final day skiing i got separated from Richie and finished the day out alone. While coming down a black moggle slope i hit a moggle bad which threw me off balance send me into a straight line down the slope. I couldn't slow down and the only way out was 150m of moggles to a flat area to stop in. I leaned back and kept the tip of the skies up. The best suspension in the world didn't have a patch on what my legs were doing. I was doing about 10 moggles a second if not more. I went past this fella at such a speed i think the wind from me knocked him over. I came out at the end unscaved and delight. I nearly went and did it again, hell of a rush.
We went out one of the night and it was 25cent pot of beer for 2 hours of course everyone was pissed mainly also because they were all ten. But i joined in regardless. The folowing day went up as far as Jasper this little town north of Banff. All the sight along the way were brilliant. Walking through forest to find a frozen waterfall at the end. Glacier ice coming down the mountain but the tour was a load of bollochs. I could of drove to the lookout area in a shitty fiesta and they had us in a 4x4 monster bus some rip off. We had a few words to no end. Getting back from Jasper we got on a bus straight away to Calgary and went for a drink in none other than an Irish bar. Mike and me were stayin in the HI hostel in probably the dodgiest area of town. Bums and addicts roamed freely across the street. Poppy out from door unexpectedly asking for change with a quick reply from us NO!!
Our flight out the following morning was at 9am and arising at 6.30 we thought we had lots of time. Outside it had snowed for only an hour and it was 3" deep with the heavy snow still fallin we could not get a taxi at all. Knowing we missed the flight we phoned to change the flight but due the the snow the flight was cancelled anyway relieve we booked on for the next flight and went for the fry. When the snow stopped 5 hours later 40cm of snow fell savage.
At the airport we nearly missed the flight. The screen was saying departs at 6 so we sat for food and beer. Until smoky went out for a quicky. He seen on the screen flight bording last call. We dashed for the security check and they had mike stopped for a good search while we went on ahead. His face was funny when i told him the flight had just left. The poor auld scousa but we made it after all. Vancouver next stop
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

We head for Nanoimo our first stop for the night with me letting off every 10 mins it was a long trip for the boys. It was a small town on the edge of the water where sea planes came into dock. The town itself was a little dead we went out to this lonely club where a few from the town show up for an auld shin dig.
Heading off the following morning to Tofino the main town to visit. I slept the whole way so i dont know what we saw nothing good cause we didnt stop so later in Tofino it look a bit quiet but we found a hostel where we met up with a group and went to a bombfire that night down on the beach at the edge of the forest. We stay there for the night she was quiet enough in the end. The following day we went out to the hot springs an hour a half boat ride away. We got to see a bald eagle neat up in the tree which was really good. Further out at sea we came upon a seaotter lying on his back in the middle of the sea. We were told that they keep the same rock there entire lives in crack open shell fish. When not in use it tucked under their arm. We then saw the spray from a whale but never anthing more unfortunately. Out at the Hot spring it was a half hour walk thruogh the forest on a wooden deck where people had carved the names into it. If i had my router i be there too but i did find Snowdraggon. The fucker up and escaped on ya dad. The springs didn't have the strong sulphure smell like rotarua so were nice to bath in for hours. With it own waterfall of very hot water to finish you off. Two random dogs that fled the town they live in across the water live there now getting fed only by the passing tourists. Although dirty they're friendly enough and was happy to part with a bit of sandwich. Still no Jake though. That night we went out for Kareoke and i think i lost the voice i think i had. The following day we headed back for Victoria for a night out there. On the way we stop at the ceadar forest for more brilliant forest views. Then out of no where driving in the car we saw a black bear on the side of the road feeding. Scott couldn't find a good spot to "turn" so it was only a glimpse i could of tock him though bring on the Grizzly. Victoria was a happening little town with good night. Again the addicts were around. But the nice area down by the harbour was a good spot to spend a few hours. The museum there was the best i have been in. With life size replicas of everything including builing of that time it was well worth the trip better still they accepted the student card for money off. The Minature World is another well worth visit again with the student card. The model are made in such detail some of them tock 4 years to make with over 70,000 hours put into them. The doll houses were brilliantly made withsuch detail they must have some patients. I think on this trip Mike and me brought Richie to near insanity with the winding up and slagging. He didn't know what was really and what fantasy we had imagined. "I think if it had of went on like that it would of got the best of the lad." Anyone give me the film that line is from?
I managed to get out for a game of golf. I met a partner on my way out there on the bus so that was handy. Gerry a fella from Canada. Pairing up with two more it was a good day out. Im still bustin a good ball. Cant wait to take on that brother again.
Im fallin sick again with a soure throught and with a flight tomorrow i know it'll be painful.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Getting into the main downtown area and we knew it wasn't unlike Calgary. Bums and addicts roamed the plains again. Stanlet park nearby was a nice bike ride to relax and get away from it all. With the golden gate look alike bridge extending out of the park to North Vancouver and the nice areas. Across the bridge the suspension bridge into the forest which is a nice walk but definately not worth the money we paid to get in. Then onto Grouse mountain for a view over the entire city. The money it cost you could get over but the 2 hour que to get onto the fuckin cable car up to the top was shite. Its a nice city but it has all been throw up very quickly. Endless steel and glass structures that looks like they were throwin up just to make itself a city. It has no real beauty or caractor to it at all. We rented a car to head off to Vancouver island a short ferry ride away. This is where the Banter began four men in a car and Paddy's ass doing inhuman things i was getting worried.
San Diego, California, United States

How are ya all.
This is the west coast of America. I flew into Los Angeles. Getting at 12am i was absolutely shattered. I just wanted to get into the rental car and get out to the hostel. But that was not going to be. The credit card didn't have enough credit and was not able to get the car. Load of bollox. Had to get a hotel and get the bus out to where i thought the hostel was on Long beach. An hour and a half i arrived at the wrong beach. I finally got to the right one at 5pm.
I stayed in the HI in Santa Monica. The main street is full of people selling their music while playing. Alot of them are fairly good. Again there is alot of homeless in the street. Up in the hollywood hills you find the real wealth. Chris and me were coming back from the Sunset strip when we seen the new Merc SLR driving by. Being the first one ever that i had seen it was great to see it. We drove on up to the next block and what was stop at the lights but another SLR next to a Lambergini. Too much money.
I headed to San Diego for four days. It was great being back on PB. The shop that i work in has double in size. But the rest of the area looked pretty much the same.
San Fransico was a great city. I was in a really small hostel so it made it easier to meet up with people. The fella behind the desk a Kerry man brought us all out to the local pub. Paddy's was much the same as you would get a home although its been a while since i seen one. I met up with a gang to do the Golden gate bridge with. The following day we head off on a tandem and three single. This was grand when it was boy girl but when i broke the bike the two bloke had to get on the tandem in San Fransico. We were getting some funny looks from the girls jugging by. The parents arrived on the 18/3 and with them a decent room and good dinner. I put on 3 kg in the 10 days they were here. The Alcatraz prison was a good tour we were glad to see an Irishman Machine gun Kelly was in with the big boys like Capone.
Down in Pebble Beach golf course was class, the course is the best ive played on ever and i played alright too which helped. The coastline coming down south from San Fransico is spectacular. The driving was great craic fun. No traffic for about 3 hours staight on hilly coastline great fun.
I flew out of LA for Seattle connecting to Calgary. Im not fully to blaim what happen i booked the hostel and told her that i had i flight on the 2nd and she told me 3 nights. Arriving at the airport i was told it was the 1st a whole 26 hours early for the flight nice. I got change onto the flight leaving there and then and got to spend an extra in seattle. This was a strange place it was built on a swamp more or less. It was right at sea level so at high tide the waves washed up the sewer which would blow up 6 feet into the air. The whole town burned down for a fresh start. Instead of heaping earth down to build up the level of the city they built the building at the same level but built the roads high some where up to 33feet high. Then they built path over the exsisting one in at the first floor level leaving an under ground city intact. This all took 12 years to complete. Getting across the road involved alot of ladders.

Well talk to you again soon
Paddy
Lima, Peru

Hi all
Against my plans im in peru. Had the worst day of my trip ending up here too. I left La Paz in the early morning for the airport where i think the taxi ripped me off. At the check-in desk I was told my flight reservation was cancelled. Ringing Edreams was no help and i had to book a flight there and then to get to Lima. As the plane landed i was having numerous bowl movements which were getting more and more violent. Upon departing the plane and finding the mens rooms i found it was closed for cleaning. I had to que through immigration doing the man needing a shit stance. I was waiting for him to say go talk to these officers for looking so shifty but all was OK. Moving briskly toward the tiolet on the other side with short step mind you I landed on the tiolet and not a moment too soon. What followed was a scene straight out of the film Dumb and Dumber. I sat there for 10 minutes exploding into this tiolet. God help the people in the next cubicules.
I went for my bags and everything in this department went fine but then when trying to get a flight at the desk i was quoted $1600. I found a cheaper flight on the internet but when I went to find Ireland for the address bar we were non-exsistant. I had to give up here due to more bowl activity only this time i had three bags to carry. Again with the man needing a shit walk, i got to the tiolet with farts pebble dashing the tiolet bowl.
I went for a taxi to head to Lima and after change money this man from New York David offered to share the taxi into town. The fella was fluent in spanish so this helped alot in getting a hostel. We went strolling around the town and then in went to book a flight again to LA. I found a great price the cheapest by far and when it came to the billing address it was for american only. David said he`d put it on his credit card and i`d give him the money. I tried taking the amount out for him and the card started acting up after i had only got half out. David`s generosity went as far as he said he would pay for it anyway and i could owe him and other half when i reach New York. The man is a saint and i definately will meet up with him in Manhattan.
With all this finished with we ended the day with a pint which was gladly recieved.
My bowl problems have recent cleared up i think!

Lima
This is a beatiful city with huge squares in the middle of the city with grand old building surrounding. The people are so friendly there almost seems like there are angle for them. Agustto a travel guide offered me a guide tour to go to Machu Pichu when i return here again. He says he 43 but he looks 28 so the years have been good. When i had met him he was so off his head on Coke or something the words were flying out of him. His enlish was good then he start to talk in french. As he told me repeatedly he is a very good guide good craic. There are time when i wish i could speak spanish because the rather cute barmaid that night was trying to talk to me and we just weren`t getting anywhere. In the end she gave me a bracelet to keep i think il call back there tonight.

Thats all Folk
Thanks again David, see you soon

Paddy
La Paz, Bolivia

Hi all
Well this is the end of my south america tour. I fly to north america tomorrow. The final few days in Lapaz were really good although i got off to a bad start. The bus journey up from Villazon was horrible. twenty four hours of numbassitis. Come through all of the town along the way really gave you a since of how poor they are. The land they have to work with rocks and gravel. Alot of the town are run down shanty like things and even the bigger city which they are trying to do up are dirt road with traffic going everywhere. When i got into La paz for the third time, since i didn't know what to expect i kept asking people is this La Paz hoping in the back of my mind it wasn't, it didn't look great at the start. Reading that bloody Lonely Planet book had me all worried about these scam that were going on. I walked to the hostel because taxis were;'t safe.

The town itself sit 3640 meters or 12000 ft above sea level so the air is a little thin. You dont really notice it until after you start to walk around the town. The city sprawls up the side of the mountain so your either going up hill or down. Wheelchair user would be fucked. The town is better than any thailand for shopping. The street are packed with stalls from the main road climb 20 or so blocks up the hill. The best thing is there not like thailand haselling you to buy stuff. You can buy anything on the street and i mean anything. I was going down the street going past phone shops cafe music shops and then i get to the coffin shop, display like furniture at sale prices. Not right. Other gross thins are you can buy these shurnken Alpackas, these are like sheep but bigger and long necks and they have them sized down to the size of a cat. Their skin bones and eyes can still all be see. Going out at night i manage to find an Irish bar for a bit of dinner. and the barman told me the hot spots. Went to Mongos where i met up with these two girl Mildred from Bolivia and Sandra from Argentina the birthday girl. Mildred spoke spanish and english but Sandra was only spanish so Mildred had to inform the other what was going on.

The follow day Mildred brought me on a tour of the city, the parts the tourist never really see and to a cafe were i got lovely Peruvian food. She knew the history of her country all to well and its tough what has gone on over the years. This was all followed by a strange but real film at the cinema, not your typical hollywood shite. It was a book wrote by the spanish equivalent of shakespear. It was different to say the least with lotsw of random sex scenes. This was the secondary school novel the kid read.

Today i went on a bike on the world most dangerous road. The start is like any typical Irish hillside road but then we get to the real bit. Its a gravel road about 3-5 meter wide with a broken unstable edge to a drop of about 400 meters below and they were slowin my up going down it. It rained for the whole day so the wet surface made it interesting. I did have one moment which gave me a scare. We had to ride on the edge of the cliff to avoid on coming cars. I was coming down in the track of the wheel and coming around a corner at a nice speed the front wheel hit the loose gravel making me skid to the edge. Well im still here so i recovered it in time. It was a great day out and a nice end in La Paz.

I found La Paz a really good city and would come back with just a bag and fill it up. Everthing is so cheap tonight i got soup the most expensive steak and water for 50 Bolivianos which is 5 Euros. The cloth are better but theres no real battering becuase at the end of the day your fighting over 1 or 2 euro.

Well chat cha soon

Paddy
Villazon, Bolivia

That was a interesting night stay in La Quinca but for €4 it wont be the Shelbourne. Lonely Plant said La Quinca was a better spot than Villazon i have to disagree there is alot more market stalls and just more to look at. It did get one thing right though there is a lack a amenities not just banks and thing but bloody tiolets i was searching the town for a hour and a half to have a dump. Any who moving on from my bowel movements. I had Breakfast in this cafe which didn´t deserve to be in the town it was in. The husband and wife were both really friendly and showed me books of past traveller and the Cead Mile Failte up on the wall. She better still have my bag. All the street in the area are all full of stall selling blankets cloths and other thing to keep you warm. Going to get on a bus now for the next 23 hours.
So talk again soon
Paddy
Salta, Argentina

Just a short one
After a poxy two bus with Marco Antonio something singing on DVD (Argentina´s Daniel O Donnell). I got off the bus with this lad Dave from England. He said this was Salta and since I was asleep I believed him. The bus pulled off and we found ourselves in the middle of no where definately not Salta. We rang for a taxi which came fairly fast. We got to Salta a half hour later for 60 pesos not too bad.

We then had to get a local cab to a hostel. Upon arrival there Dave tells me he lost his phone this brand new N95 top of the range phone which he had replaced the month previous because he had it robbed off of him. Going on anyway to this hostel to find out it was closed down fuck sake!! Doorman tells us to head to this place which wouldn´t answer the door. We eventually found a place did i tell ya it was pissing rain through all of this yea it was. The following morning i tried my luck to get a night for free which alway worked before. We had arrived at 2.30 am on the 25th i was trying to stay til the 26th but he didnt go for it. After a lovely breakfast in the main square dave headed onto the bus terminal i thought it best i give him a days head start so he well gone.

I wander the street of this city which appear to be kinda rich at heart all the restrant were all very fancy. I said this is were i get the famous steak. The restrant i end up in didn´t let me down very taste with my bottle of wine even though I did have to dine alone. Moving on from there kinda tipsy mind you i made it to the local bar scene. All were still having dinner so i found a bar with no one but the barman turned out to be a really nice fella. Had a drink with him and he showed me the place to go. It took a while to fill up but before long i was in the middle of an argentinian group who had come to watch there dutch friend play. I had to buy a cd. We all made our way from there to another club i think we were the only ones there good thing it was tiny. A good night all round.

On to La Quinca
Paddy
Puerto Iguazu, Argentina

Hi All
I got out of Rio again safely and made my way down south to Foz De Iguazu. The waterfall here here is spectacular. Niagra fall has alot to live up to beat these sensational views. The Brazil side get a better panoramic view but on the Argentina side you get up close and wet!!! Patrick and me or me myself and I went crossing the border early in the morning with this lunatic bus drive, not for driving just your general lunatic. There was three main area the first we went out into was the Devil´s Throat. The name suits after a fifteen minute walk out on a platform across the river out into the heart of the waterfall we notice people were getting wetter and wetter the near we got. The spray rising up from the bottom was absolutly savage. The platform is located right at the edge of the waterfall so looking out you are surround by the noise and the spray.
Head back to the next area was the upper superior falls were we walked along the tops of loads of waterfall coming from the forests and bushes. The views here were brilliant like nothing i had seen before. After and over priced lunch we went to the lower superior which was going to the bottom of the falls just so you could get soaking wet again, sure why not.

The following day Patrick and I parted ways again at the bus terminal. I headed for the argentinian border heading for Salta in Argentina. After a long time going through the border I got to Puerto Iguazu where i was going to get the bus from. Buses all full i got a hostel for the night and went for a wander. This town was a real lively little town which lots of pub and restrants. Thinking to myself this would be a good spot for another random night out, i thought it would be good if Patrick was here. I went for dinner and who showed up but himself. Im thinkin i may have skitsofrenia (excuse spelling but come on). All this travelling alone may of taken it toll. He could only get a bus out the following day so there was my random night. We met up with a couple of Isreali Girls and had a bit of a laugh with them, twasa fine night. The following day Patrick and I parted company again. Cheers Dude had good time traveling with ya.

Chat cha all again soon
Paddy
