... AND THE FINAL NUMBER IS... (drums).... $8,500...!!! Great job everyone!!! For one night only in New York , we have collected enough money to send 34 girls to school for a year. A year is enough to learn to read and to do simple math. Imagine a life with and life without those skills. I am very proud of all of you! Thank you for coming, thank you for bringing your friends and thank you for giving! A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ELSA AND DAVID BRULE!!! Turns out, my trip through Tibet really starts when I leave the Autonomous Region of Tibet. Free to travel without the cumbersome permits and in tourist groups doing tourist things, I dive into experiencing the "real thing". I take a sleeper bus. Sleeper buses are one of the marvels of Chinese transportation industry. Distances are huge. Planes or trains are not always available. Sleeper bus is the way to go. I show my ticket and get on. The driver points me to my bed. There are 3 rows of two level beds. I sigh with relieve when I discover that the good lady that sold me the ticket, has given me a bed on the first level by the window, as opposed to a bed on the second level in the middle row. I take my shoes and put them in the plastic bag handed to me at the door. It is all relatively clean and well organized. The slight problem is - these are beds for petite Chinese people, not for big fat Europeans. The space is tight. Now I know why the driver was making big circular motions with his hands first pointing to my small backpack and then to the luggage compartment outside. There is no space for it. I arrange and rearrange my belongings until I'm able to fit everything under the bed. That is everything, but my i-pod, my camera, a book, the lonely planet guide, a large pack of sweet race cakes, a big bottle of water, my sleeping bag still folded, a bunch of bananas and a packet of sunflower seeds. There is hardly space left for me on the bed, but at least I ensure I won't die from thirst, hunger or boredom on this 20 hour bus ride. You never really know when the bus will stop for a bathroom break, so it would be silly to over-hydrate. And living on sweet rice cakes and bananas can be a bit sickening but it is preferable to famishing yourself. The bus leaves pronto. The passengers make final arrangements in their beds-seats. Eventually, everyone relaxes and the guys light a cigarette as to seal the deal that we have indeed departed. I crack the window open and try to read but I am all too excited to focus on the history of 15th century China. Still holding the book open, I stare blankly out the window as we drive on wide dusty suburban boulevards fringed by large monotonous grey residential buildings that remind me of the commi-style suburbs of my home town and put me in a comfortable state of mind. The landscape changes from suburbia to low grass lands and stays there, hour after hour, after hour. Eventually, the monotonous landscape and the rocking of the bus put me into a dream like state. After some time the dream like state morphs into a drunk like state. I can't take enough breath. I know it's the altitude. I don't know where exactly we are, but it must be high. Altitude is a very interesting thing. Every time is like the first time. You never know if it is going to affect you, or how exactly - symptoms ranging from lightheadedness, raised heart beat, numbed fingers, shortness of breath, mild headache, massive headache, vomit, complete inability to breath and in the extreme cases - death (hopefully not at this altitude). It is dark outside. The windows are frozen and I can't see the sky, which is a shame, because it is probably amazing. I huddle in my sleeping bag, trying to accept the fact that there is nothing I can do but wait for it to be over. Sometime in the middle of the night, the bus stops for another bathroom break. Chinese toilets in the country side are something else. The first time I walked in one, I said: "Oh, sorry" and walked right out. There was a woman inside doing her business. But as I  waited embraced by the open door, another woman walked past me and squatted by the first one. Then it hit me - the long canal has been made that long not for luxury, but to be used by more than one person at a time. When in Rome...I took a deep breath and walked in. No-one seemed to care. From where I was squatting, I could see the waste of hundreds of women who were here before me. It was an unsettling experience. So when I stepped out of the bus and realized that there is no toilet at all at this particular toilet break, I rejoiced.We are at the outskirts of some small village, parked next to a high mud wall. The guys go straight for the wall. The women squat on the other side of the street. It is a fool moon. Dogs are barking somewhere in the distance. I look around and eventually decide to walk around the corner where the wall casts a deep shade. Satisfied with my privacy, I unbuckle my belt, pull down my slacks, roll down my thermals and my underwear and squat. The barks are getting closer. I hesitate for a moment. The barks seem to be really close now. I stand up and pool everything up at once. Just as I do that, the pack clears the corner and in a second, I see the unfriendly bared teeth of the leader of the pack violently invading my personal space. It is a mid size dog of unidentifiable breed, and ugly one too. Its fur is in a dire state, but all of its teeth are in place. In a split second I'm running towards the bus. With my pants still unzipped, I fly out of the corner in the face of dozen peacefully peeing Chinese man with a pack of dogs on my ass. Moment of confusion for all the parties involved. The guys gain their baring admirably swiftly and start yelling at the dogs that now feel outnumbered and retreat. With my legs still shaking I cross the street and squat on the other side. Never again will I deny the safety of Chinese toilet, nor will I ever recover from my fear of dogs at night. As far as the dangers of traveling alone around the world goes, this is the closest I've ever felt to getting into a serious trouble.  The rest of the ride is freezing, but uneventful. Eventually my pulse drops below 120. In the reassuring safety of the dawn, I fall asleep. We arrive shortly after. It is 4:30am. ***WORLD CHANGE STARTS WITH EDUCATED CHILDREN! Believe it or not, I'm still in Buenos Aires. Not for much longer though. I'll head to Patagonia soon for one last quest into The Wild. Then, officially, my adventure is over. When I finally make it back to Europe for Christmas, I would have verified that the World is round indeed :) I'm flying from Buenos Aires to New York on November 27th, and you bet there would be a lot I'd be thankful about this Thanksgiving. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of friends and strangers that supported my 100 Girls Back to School Appeal. Together, we have raised close to $10,000!!! I've lost my sweater. It was a good sweater, my only sweater. Where am I going to find the same sweater now? It was light and warm, from Alpaca wool. Alpaca, you know, that weird animal that looks like a cross between sheep and giraff and lives in the highlands of Peru. It is pretty darn cold over there, so the Alpacas really know how to keep themselves warm. It was such a good sweater - sporty, but totally acceptable to wear at a dinner party. I had light and dark gray-brown horizontal stripes - not too wide, not to narrow, just the right stripe size - and it was all natural color. It suited me well that color. Uh. It had a hoodie. I've used it so many times to preserve my body-heat when sleeping in those same cold places in Peru. Yes, I was sleeping in it, and I also hiked in it and I wore it on the buss, when it got cold from the AC, or from the high altitude, or from the night. I wore it in Spanish class, when it was cold, or when my T-shirts wasn't presentable enough, because the sweater was. It was shapely and it stayed shapely. It wasn't the kind of sweater you buy for $10, that you are going to though away at the end of the trip. No no, it was much better than that, although I did pay only $10 for it. But it was soaked with memories and I was going to keep it forever, and take it with me on every trip, just like I do with my orange baseball cap that I got in New York 8 years ago. You always need A sweater when you travel. This one was perfect. It didn't take too much space, and it was light, and it was very, very warm. I wore it all the time, except for two days ago, when it got really warm all of a sudden, so I took it off and throw it around the shoulder strap of my bag. And so it slipped away while I was walking and I never sow it again. I went back to look for it. It was a long way - walked halfway around Parque "3 de Febrero" and across Avenida de Libertador, zigzagged through the streets of Palermo Nuevo, crossed the train tracks and continued on the street that lies between the Big mosque and the Big supermarket, that looks so huge on the outside, that every time I pass buy I tell myself that they must have yogurt in this place, and I should come back and buy some when I have more time. There is no sweater in sight. I turn left at the bottom of the street, right at the edge of the polo course, and then make the first right into a quiet street. I stop again by the pretty orange house that looks deserted. Deserted as in: "no one lives here and no one cares". The heavy gate from cast iron is locked with a thick chain, but the front door is open and I can see through the tree branches that the house is empty inside. There is a glass covered terrace in the back and I think that it would be so nice to sit there in the sun, protected from the wind. It is getting cold now, and I am beginning to miss my sweater. Long story short, I didn't find it.  I lost other things last week, like a big chunk of my retirement savings, but I don't miss them. I never touched them (the savings that is) and they never did me any good. They were sitting there, compounding. They went up, and they went up, and then they went down. I don't miss them, but I miss my sweater. I miss huddling in it while watching the coffee maker drip hastily and spray coffee aroma into the chilly morning air. I miss it at the evenings, when it is too cold for a t-shirt, but too warm for a jacket. And I miss it when I'm dashing out to the bodega down the street to buy tangerines, which make an excellent non-fat snack while watching the financial indices bouncing up and down like there is no tomorrow. FYI: I have to snack, because I don't smoke any more.  What a crazy world, you can't even make plans for your sweater.***WORLD CHANGE STARTS WITH EDUCATED CHILDREN! Well, I know this is supposed to be a travel blog, but right now, I am incapable of writing about my travel adventures - they seem boring. All the action seems to be now in the markets.  I have not read news in a major way ever since I handed my analyst's resignation right before the crisis started. I also admit to have largely ignored headlines that sounded as if out of financial horror movie, that were popping on my screen while I was traveling through Uruguay and Brazil this past month. Up until last week that is. I've been mostly glued to my laptop for the past 4 days, trying to catch up on 14 months of reading. The last thing I told my boss in London, right before I left for Tibet, was that my best-case scenario is that the credit crisis hits a bottom by the time I'm done traveling, and the house prices drop, so I can finally buy a house. OMG! Once again - careful what you wish for. I would have though that watching my last savings, the one I was supposed to use to buy a house, melt before my eyes with a lightening speed would've been the worst thing I can imagine. Not quite actually. A different much more horrifying picture emerged before my eyes in Asia. The iconic image of Asian streets filled with bicycles have been replaced by a sprawling hell of scooters with increasing percentage of cars. I think the day traffic in Asia starts to resemble traffic in LA would be many days too late to save the world from ecological disaster. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to pick on Asians - they have just as much right to dream of better life and brighter future as any person in the so called developed world. The problem is, you see, that the world can not sustain "developed world" level of consumption on a world wide level. If they say the world is at a tipping point now, imagine what additional 2 billion cars would do to it.Oh, but it is not just cars, it is everything - the food we eat (meet eaters polute more), the cloths (fashoinistas polute more), the electronics and home appliances - everything. So as the world is getting richer, it wants to consume more, and as it wants to consume more, it produces more, and as it produces more, it uses resources and pollutes more. And don't tell me that you don't pollute because you recycle and turn off your computer at night, and buy organic food occasionaly, please. That 0 calories, 150gr yogurt in your fridge comes in a plastic container, doesn't it? And what do you think would've happen if everyone in this world started using a fringe? Where do you think most of your belongings were manufactured, and do you know in how much pollution that resulted? The filth, the rotting domestic and human waste in Indian is shocking to see and smell (sorry to pick on India again), but to be honest, that poor person in India, who lives on rice and vegetables and has two (at best) stacks of cloths and walks to get around is a lot cleaner than all of us in the western societies. We stink! And we pu-pu all over the world, more than anyone else does. Don't you dare say that China polutes as much as the US. It does in real terms, but not per capita. Your average Chinese polutes lot less than your average American, or average European for that matter. Not to mention that all that stuff that is being produced in China at Nature's expense is being sold back to us. And we buy it, bcs it's cheap, and we can consume more of it. We clean the gutters of our streets and like to think that we are clean, but we stink up the whole world.   Once, when I was very little, my mom told me a story about her grandmother's chicken. The whole family went to pick up grandma from her country home and take her to town for a week. I don't remember what the emergency was, and it is not important any ways. What's more important is that grandma had few hens and didn't have anyone to ask to feed them while she was gone. So brilliantly, she decides to leave them enough food to last them for a week and goes back to the house to pack. When she checks on the hens before leaving for town, she discovers that in half an hour they ate all the food, the whole one week supply. "They were so heavy, they couldn't move and were just squatting in the yard, looking very silly and disorientated" - mom tells me. "My father had to break their necks at once, because they wouldn't have survived much longer". "But, mommy, mommy, why did the chickens eat all the food? Didn't they know it is not good for them?", I squeak horrify by the demise of the chicken. "I don't know", mom shrugs, "chickens have small brains, I guess". I wonder if it was indeed the chicken brain in fault, or just nature taking its course - if there is food, you eat. If there is too much food, you eat until you burst, or become obese. I doubt the chickens knew what was awaiting them if they kept eating, but I think we do - it's all over the news all the time - we are polluting in horrible proportions, and that is slowly but surely destroying the world. And while the simple solution to the problem will be if we all collectively started to consume less, none of us would. You won't start car pooling, or buying less stuff just like that, because it is going to save the world by .000000001%^100000. It would take years of PR and public education to alter consumers behaviour, as well as years of inovation to improve efficiency. Do we have years? Not to mention that the chorus of green activists, scientists and politicians is constantly being radio-silenced by the corporate advertising - buy, buy, buy. The buying proposition is incidentally always delivered by a sexier messenger. And polititions always lie, any ways. But what public morals can't do, private finance can do overnight. Watching your 401K evaporating may not be the most inspiring sight, but might as well be that magic wand that was needed to shrink consumtion, and at least postpone the ongoing self destruction untill solution is found.   The markets have made a strong recovery today, and may as well continue to climb tomorrow, but in my humbled opinion, the world this week is a very different world from the world a week ago. If you are poorer today than you were yesterday, you don't go out and spend more. Collectively, we are about, well, about several trillion poorer, depends on what time in the day you asked me. Even if you are just as rich today as you were a week ago, but you know how quickly that might change, you still don't spend more than yesterday, unless you are brainless, reckless, idiot, which I believe people are not, especially when it comes down to their own money. And just for a good measure, on the foothill of this financial rollercoaster comes the most important sales period in the year - Christmas, also well known as bonus time or a layoff  time, depending on the point of the cycle. Anybody in doubt about the point of the cycle? I don't know what you think, but I bet, I literally bet my house acquisition potential, that there will be some pretty horrible comps rolling in the next few quarters, that the real economy is heading south, more south than last week and certainly more south than a month ago, and still south even if Obama wins, which I very much hope he does. I reckon there will be a recession caused by the deteriorating consumer confidence and I recon that will do us good that is not measurable by a market index.    *** Separately, and completely unrelated to market fluctuations, here is what happened in the past month in my world: 1. my laptop crashed (no worries, had it backed up, so nothing was lost but some quality lap-top time) 2. I crossed Uruguay south to North in 4 days. Uruguay is a small country of 3 million people which struck me with it's obvious love for matte and the drop dead gorgeous male population. I spent couple of weeks in South of Brazil with Lu and Lari, mostly drinking caipirinias on the beach and waiting for the clouds to clear and the sun to come out. The sun did come out eventually. About 15 minutes before I had to leave for the buss station. Hence, no bikini pictures from Brazil. Sorry.  4. I made a detour to Iguaçu Falls, which is a sight spectacular and overwhelming beyond words. I think the best description came in the form of excited exclamation I overhead upon arriving at the view point, quote: "Hooolyyyy shit!". Pictures to come. 5. I've re-covered my laptop, logged on to the internet, and discovered that the world is about to collapse. Then it collapsed. And then recovered, sort of. 6. In the past week I've been conducting an indebt research into Bs As's bars and restaurants with Omri. Global credit crisis does not seem to affect them - they are New York quality at Argentinean prices. Perfect example of how - Omri and I concluded - restaurants in New York will be a year from now, in the midst of the recession.  The revelation of the month is that I really actually like finance. I am almost addicted to it. The problem is, that the results of a traditional career in finance are largely unsatisfying, even when they come in large numbers.
