how desperate were we for tickets to this sold out show? desperate enough to sleep out from 1:30 (yes in the AM) until just 10 day of seated tickets were released at 10:30 that morning... we got into london at about 10 o'clock monday nite and tried to find a pub that would stay open a little later than the usual 11pm... but we had to settle for a mcdicks where we sat around playing cards until about 1:20 and then made our way over to the Donmar Warehouse to set up for the night... we were the first ones there (we're very proud of that fact) but people started lining up shortly afterwards... by 3am i would say there was enough people to claim all the seated tix. there were still 20 standing tix to be released as well... i got maybe a half hour to an hour of broken sleep... marina didn't manage any at all... at 10:30 we got our tix and then went out to marina's cousins place to crash for a few hours! thank goodness... how bad would it be to wait in line all night to get tix just to fall asleep during the performance?? as for the performance itself, i would say one of the best pieces of theater i've ever seen.. Seeing Ewan Mcgregor as Iago alone was worth freezing our butts off overnight!!! Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello was incredible as well... it was rivetting! Colin Farrel was in the audience too which was pretty kewl.. its amazing how many celebs you can spot on a night out in London... the crowd was pretty young and kinda swarmed him, poor guy... as we were wandering the streets of london we also managed to acquire £60 each worth of casino vouchers!! we met this DJ who apparently locked his keys in his company car and long story short he needed a few quid so we gave him some change and in return he hooked us up with these vouchers... so we went and registered at the casino and scored a bunch more vouchers so we are looking forward to going gambling London style!

Waitangi (New Zealand national day) was on the 6th of February, but the celebration was the 9th in London.. Thousands took to the streets wearing flags or sometimes little else... basically the pub crawl started at 10 am at Paddington station and went around the circle line and every stop people got out and took to the streets (and some pubs) chanting, dancing, to put it simply it was a drink fueled madness... at around 4 or 5 everyone gathered at the parlaiment under Big Ben and people were climbing the light posts and climbing on top of phone boxes trying to get a good view of the Haka... we were too far back and trying to find some lost friends.. you think that holding a giant orange traffic cone would make us easy to spot but unfortunately they were lost for the rest of the evening... have to admit i don't remember much after the mass crowding under Big Ben but it was a great night.. New Zealanders/Aussies know how to party like no other...

we decided to try our luck at getting tix for either Phantom of the Opera or Othello tonite but didn't manage either.. as we were walking through leicester square we stumbled across the fenced off area for 'the accidental husband' premier starring Uma Thurman and Colin Firth... we met these photographer/autograph guys and decided to stick around with them... after a long cold evening people finally started showing up... we had a great spot right on the railing so as Uma Thurman is walking up doing autographs Paul leans in and yells ' hey Uma, want to go for a drink after the show?' and she replies 'my, you're quite forward' looks at him and says 'and young!'... it was great... we couldn't believe she actually responded... then marina got Colin Firths autograph... so even though we never got to see either of the performances we came to london to see, we still managed to have a great nite!

its THE thing to do in Cambridge and Oxford... punts are these squarish boats and you stand on a platform at the back and are given a long stick which you stick into the water and propel yourself forward... it doesn't look that hard, but you have to make sure you stick it in straight down in the back, cause if you put to the side you turn sideways... and sometimes the river bed in deep and sometimes its shallow and sometimes its muddy and doesn't want to give you the stick back... paul did most of the punting, but i gave it a whirl at the end and managed a nice ziz zag back to the boat launch... and most importantly i didn't fall in!

Hitchin, United Kingdom

St Ippolyts is too small of a town, it would be impossible to find on a map! hahaha... so i will say that i am in Hitchin... the Greyhound Inn (where i working/living) is about a half hour walk to Hitchin town center and there i find everything i need... Library for internet and books, loads of charity shops and bookstores... there are a few pubs and clubs that we occasionally come into town to go to... for a good nite out though, i prefer just to head to London (only 30-45 min by train) and at least have a better choice of places that may to more to my liking... last weekend we ended up at Soho Revue Bar and caught a pretty kewl band.. this weekend i'm going to see Gogol Bordello!!! the job itself is pretty sweet.. super laid back and everyones really friendly, staff and costumers... i serve in the pub and clean rooms when needed...

undoubtedly one of the most magical experiences i have witnessed.. we left at 4:30am and made pretty good time so we got there about  7:00 and they were doing a druid ceremony thingy which was kinda interesting... it was all a little amateurish but quite beautiful... it had been pretty cloudy and foggy since the night before but then sunrise hit at 8:09 and the clouds and fog broke for just 5 minutes so you could see it... it was absolutely stunning! you are usually only allowed to see it from walkway (and you have to pay to get in) but you can't go near the stones... but for solstice you are allowed right at them... you're allowed to touch them and you can just feel the energy pulsing through... the acoustics within the stones is incredible as well... with all the singing and dancing and chanting it was lovely! we met a bloke that playing his didgeridoo into a little groove at the base of a stone which reverberated through the circle and we went to talk to him... it turns out his friend who taught him to play and helped him make his first didgeridoo has passed away and he had buried some of his ashes in that little groove and was playing for him... i thought that was such a beautiful story...

i had heard great things about this beautiful city so we decided to check it out... i absolutely love the cities that are circled by city walls (intact or not) and this one was another great one... we visited the Pilgrims Hospital that has been around for hundreds of years and is still used to house those less fortunate.. quiant little stone building with chapel and apartments.. we didn't bother with the cathedral, we had all seen our fair share of churches and  cathedrals that it wasn't worth the 7£ entry... saw it from the outside and that was good enough for us... it ended up being a gorgeous day (considering it is in fact winter in britain) and we walked through some gardens and along the river... theres a river boat tour that you can take but unfortunately it doesn't run in the winter so we missed out.. afterwards we frequented a series of pubs.. outside of simple simons we met this drunk bloke that was the spitting image of the scottish comedian Billy Connolly and it was halarious... good times... all in all Canterbury was great, i have to admit that we saw more of the pubs than we did the historical sites but thats ok...

went out to Haverhill to Marina's family's place where we hung out and made dinner... ran to catch the bus back into cambridge for the winter beer fest and the bastard bus driver didn't stop for us... granted we weren't right at the bus stop but still!! so we didn't end of getting there until quite late and there was a long line to get in  :(... once inside you pay a deposit for a glass and then around 1£-1.5£ for a glass of whichever beer or cider you want.. me not being too big a fan of the english ales, i stuck to the ciders... very different flavour drinking right from the casks, very fresh...

Que Pasa!! this wasn't the kind of place i would spend my new years but it turned out to be a really good time... very typical dance club, but playing a good mix of old cheesy music and not so good top 40 hits... danced and laughed all nite... good times... as much as i woulda loved to have been in Edinburgh for New years (which was my plan since i was there this summer) it was kinda kewl to be close to home and also not in a mob of people.. just the 5 of us, Marina and Paul and their friends Alex and Steph from Belgium... all in all a memorable New Years!

Cork, Ireland

getting to Ireland was somewhat of a gongshow... which most of my long trips have been... i left Alphen a/d Rijn at 00:54 earky tuesday morning and took the train to the ferry port in Cherbourg, France... had to transfer about 4 times and was so paranoid about missing my stops that i didn't sleep, (thanks Caroline and Sherida for the Red Bull!!) that trip alone was 15 hours and then the ferry was another 18 hrs... now that i think about it, i should have just gotten a flight to ireland... considering i booked my flight from Ireland to London to start work on the 6th, and it was not even 40€... oh well... had a good time, slept great (having not slept in over 24 hours)... and then the bus was another 5 hours to Cork...i have never been so happy to arrive somewhere!! Cork is a wonderful city... considering its the second biggest in Ireland, its not really that big... met 2 girls on the ferry and we went out last nite to celebrate halloween... there was a pub which had people dressed up, but its not even close to as big a deal as it is back home! no one trick or treats, and only a couple dozen people were dressed up at the bar... today i went out to the old city jail which was really interesting... pretty grim circumstances, but then i guess most jails from the 19th century were... the way it was set up to tour through was pretty kewl... the city is great to stroll through, not being very big you can just wander for hours... great parks and riverside walks... the English market was great for fresh produce... there was supposed to be live music tonite at the hostel, but it got cancelled so we went out to a popular pub that had live music... it ended up being a crowded and private affair. :(     stayed for a drink and then headed back to the hostel for another... free popcorn and good tunes, how could we say no...
