Cusco, Peru

Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire and no serves as a tourist town and starting point for the Inca Trail and Sacred Valley. The town is full of hikers preparing for the long hike ahead or those that are recovering from the Inca Trail. MC and I used Cuzco for exactly this purpose.The city sits at 11,000ft and offers a glimpse into the past with every step. When the Spanish arrived in the 1500's they began building the city on top of the original Inca foundations. To this day you can walk the streets of San Blas and touch original Inca walls. MC and I spent our time relaxing, recovering and enjoying what the city has to offer. Besides organizing our Sacred Valley tour, rafting tour and preparing for the trail we managed to indulge in some of Peru's finest Pisco sours and 2$ beers.Enjoy the photos :)

Taquile, Peru

Taquile Island is located on the Peru side of Lake titicaca and sits at approx 13,300 ft above sea level. Taquile was one of the last islands to fall into Spanish hands during the conquest and still holds many Spanish traditions. The Spanish forbid traditional dress, and therefore the inhabitants adopted traditional Spanish peasant clothing that they still wear to this day.Besides being a beautiful remote island in Lake Titicaca, Taquile Island is also a perfect peaceful society. I know, I did not believe it either. Taquile has no jail, criminals or any need to policing. Every Sunday the locals meet in the main square to discuss their problems. If someone has broken the island rules (stealing, llying or being lazy) he/she is just booted off the Island. The best part is.......its been working for hundreds of years.The locals base their society on Inca moral code and collectivism. The Island is split into six sectors (for farming) and each family plays a separate roll. After a few years they rotate. For ex, you might work farming potato's for six years and then rotate into running a local restaurant.The island is also know for producing some of Peru's finest handwoven textiles and clothing. All men,women and children each play their separate roll in producing the textiles that are worn locally and sold to tourists. You will not find a single clothing store on the Island because everything is hand woven from sheep's wool.

The main reason MC and I ventured to Puno was to visit Lake Titicaca and it's islands. Lake Titicaca has 40 floating islands and is home to the Uros Tribe. The Uros starting making the floating islands from totora reeds during Inca times, when the Inca Indians pushed further onto their land. Since the Inca times they have continued to survive on the lake by fishing, hunting birds and trading with the locals in Puno. The islands themselves are constructed out the the roots from  Totora reeds. The uros build blocks from the roots, tied, anchored and piece together an entire floating islands. The surface of the island is covered with greed reeds to provide a walking surface. (Its like walking on a waterbed).The legends say that they existed before the sun, when the earth was still dark and cold. They were impervious to drowning or being struck by lightning. They lost their status as super beings when they disobeyed universal order and mixed with humans, making them susceptible to contempt. They scattered, losing their identity, language, and customs. They became the Uro-Aymaras, and now speak Aymara. The Uros now thrive off tourism and are able to be less dependant of traditional trading. 2000+ Uros still call the islands home and live traditional lives. Minus the gringo tourists of course.

It took us 4 flights, 1 bus and 38 hrs to arrive in Puno....but we managed. We decided to head straight for the Lake and use Puno as a launching point to visit the Islands. Puno is a Region, Province and city that is rich in Culture and Folklore. It's also at 12,500ft ASL and take some time to acclimatize. We decided to take our altitude meds (3 days) and take it fairly slow for the first few days. Fortunately, we have no issues and were back to normal within days.While in Puno we explored the city by foot and mototaxi, we indulged in Guinea Pig, Alpaca and plenty of local beer. We also managed to catch a local rally and a few sunsets.Enjoy the photos

Tofno is a small village of approximately 1700 on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This stunning village multiplies in the summer as people flock to whale watch, hike, surf and relax on the rugged coast.We spend a few nights at the hostel on the far end of town and spent our days exploring. We indulged in a few tourist activities, like Whale watching and the hot springs. We were very fortunate to see a massive hump back whale jump. twist and preform acrobats for us first thing in the morning.The natural hot springs are located near Maquinna National Park and offer several hot baths. The springs themselves are refreshed every night by the rising tide and cool off as you get closer to the ocean.

Perce, Quebec, Canada

This Pierced Rock is an island in the Gulf of St Lawrence, just off the Gaspe peninsula. Its one of the largest and most spectacular arches in the world (kinda like hole in the wall South Africa from my previous TP).The lime stone arch is 1420 ft long, 296ft wide and 289ft tall. Most people see the arch by a private boat tour, but we snagged a birds eye view from the cockpit.

There's no other place like it in Canada. Imagine yourself midst an ancient 800 year old forest covered in Moss, ferns and full of fresh crisp air. This ancient forest is home to a 800 year old Douglas Fur that stands 76 m tall and 9m round (taller than the leaning tower of Pisa).Unfortunately, the photos do not do it justice. This is truly an amazing place.

Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec, Canada

I was fortunate enough to fly into YGR during the summer months and still have time to enjoy what the island has to offer.For those of you that are not familiar, the Iles de la Madeleine are located in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and approx a 2 hr flight from Montreal. The Islands are in the shape of a half moon and stretch a distance of 65 km. The archipelago comprises about a dozen islands, six of which are interconnected by long, thin, sand dunes. I generally spend my time hiking the coast and eating lobster, but this time round I had the opportunity to Kayak the Gros Cap and explore the caves and coast line.I chose to Kayak with Parc De Gros Cap. The Park is a no profit organization that dedicated their time and money to preserving the Gros Cap. It also offers smaller tour groups (3 kayakers not 18) and top of the line newer Sea Kayaks.Enjoy the photos
