Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden

We tried to do it all in those last days in the lovely town i called my home for 4 months. It was true it flew by. I am ready to come home to my love of my life and be with my family for christmas. i went to church with Brooke and Jana where we fika'ed for an hour afterwards in the church basement. then went sledding with my amazing roommate and Jana! I will miss this place every once in a while and look back on all that i learned during my time here.

Gothenburg, Swedish Lakeland, Sweden

In one weekend drove 10 hours to get to Goteborg! we spent our whole day saturday there exploring the second largest city in Sweden. This trip was extra special because this one was spend with my recent best friend Jana Fischer. She did all the driving because she was the only one with a legal license to drive within europe. The driving was wonderful to spend time with amazing friends. the highlight and the main reason we drove so far to see the city was to explore the christmas market they had. It was so massive, we pais 70 swedish crowns just to get in side. They had entertainment galor and tons of awesome christmas booths. A large ice skating rink that had a pool of water on it from the rain it had poured all day. We enjoyed a cup of hot Glogg on Jana, as well as a yummy carmel apple. We bought dried reindeer meat for both of our families, we thought they were worth the 100 crowns. ;) The old city of Gothenberg was awesome to see to. It had tiny little streets with christmas decorations everywhere. i miss christmas already it went by way too fast.

This was the most different and diverse thanksgiving I have ever experienced. Seeing that Thanksgiving is an American Holiday, no one in Europe celebrates it or even knows what it's purpose is. I didn't want it to be just another day when I knew my family and friends would be all together celebrating over a delicious feast. Together Jana and I created our own Thanksgiving table for our friends. Most at the table had never heard of it and it's purpose so we were happy to share with them our tradition of the American culture. The turkey in the market was a bit too costly and too frozen for us to make on Thanksgiving day so we compromised with 2 small chickens. Jana and I have never cooked a whole dinner for anyone before in our lives so we were nervous about how our impression of Thanksgiving would portray to our friends. I made a green bean casserole, but when I went to start it we had no cream of mushroom soup and jana can't eat the lactose in the cream. So I went down to the store to get some lactose free cream and made my own cream of mushroom soup. It actually turned our pretty dang good with fried onions on top and everything. Jana did great at cooking the chickens and sewing them up with skewers, we use what we have available. I made a fruit salad with vanilla pudding that turned out to be a bit more massive then planned but still delicious. Including me and another American we had at our table a Nepalese man, two Kurdish friends, One Irish man and my best friend from Germany all celebrated together the day, by sharing around the table what we are thankful for. I also did an activity to teach them about the tradition, where they each read a piece of paper as part of the Thanksgiving story. After a late evening of entertaining, Jana and I were planned to leave for Gothenberg at 7 in the morning.

The room mate and I went to Stockholm for the weekend, we stayed at her parents apartment for the family wedding that was occurring. Parri's very close cousin was getting married and so the opportunity came about for me to experience my first Iranian traditional wedding. Parri's parents both don't speak English so it was quite fun trying to communicate with them in other ways. I gave them a thank you card for letting me stay there for a few days and it was in Swedish, they loved it. After meeting Parri's mother, I can see where she got her loving and generous heart. Parri's brother, Azad, speaks English fluently so we had fun talking about where I come from and how far away it is. The Family wanted to prepare me for what a Kurdish wedding is all about so they put on some videos of their celebrations. They have two traditional dances they do to celebrate a wedding and I learned and participated in both of them. I learned and participated in a lot of stuff while I was there. Parri taught me some Kurdish words before we left on the train. Most important of course was how to say thank you. For the wedding ceremony I came in with the family behind the groom and bride after was gave them an escort in the car to the wedding. I met two of Parri's girl cousins the day before the wedding and we had so much fun getting ready together and trying on our dresses for the wedding. The weddings from their culture are much more formal of an event and everyone dresses up for the occasion. This included the girls all getting their hair done at a salon along with that their makeup. We put on our dresses and went straight from the hair salon to the wedding. When we first arrived with the groom and bride, there was family already at the location of the wedding, and they began chanting and cheering as we came out behind the happy couple. It was such a different experience to be with such a different group of people than the Swedish culture. Everyone knew everyone at this party, they all knew how they were related and everyone greeted me with a huge smile and usually a hug as we exchanged "Salom"s (Hello in Kurdish). One of Parri's cousins was willing to share her Kurdish attire with me for the wedding. So after we ate dinner I changed into the traditional dress of the Kurdish people. Lucky me it was green, my favorite color! The actual wedding celebration began at 4 in the evening and finished around midnight. What did we do?! We danced, we hugged and we smiled. It was so special for Parri's cousins to invite me to share that special day with them, and teach me about their culture and family.

5:00am Saturday morning 2 Americans and an Irish man jumped on a train to embark on a 7 hour train ride headed directly west of Sundsvall Sweden; destination, Trondheim Norway. First we slept basically the whole ride there, but when we woke up a few hours from Trondheim we say beautiful country side that formed Norge. As we stepped off the train it was rainy and we were hungry, so we found our way down to burger kind for lunch where i payed 89 Norwegian Krowns for a burger meal. about 10 USD! SOOOO expensive! we needed to find our hostel to leave our stuff for the night, we had no idea where it was at. So when all us fails ask the tourist information. We found the Center of town where you can find anything there. In the direct center of town was the founder of Trondheim in 900 something. Our hostel was located a 15 minute walk outside of town and as we discoverd on a tall hill. We were not excited about hiking up the hill for our stay, but once we got to the top, we could see an awesome view of the city and harbor or Trondheim. We spent the rest of day touring the city and getting lost in what we could do. I really wanted to go ice skating on a mini ice rink they had in town, but for some reason there was only tiny little kids on it so i would of felt kind of out of place a bit. The three big things to see in Trondheim is Nidaros Cathedral, which has been there for 1000 years; The Archbishops Palace, and the Royal Crown Jewels Regaila. For a package we could see all 3 for 100 NEK. But they were all closed by the time we got there on Saturday so we were counting on being there when they opening sunday afternoon. A day and a half was perfect for us to see most of the city. It's a smaller town that has a wonderful spirit; and it was amazing to spend my time there with two amazing fun people. Sean and Brooke were two great people that i really enjoyed spending my time there with them. Sean was great at being our leader when Brooke and I had no idea where we were going. Our Hostel stay was quite interesting with people staying up all night drinking throughout the hall ways. We enjoyed a movie on Sean's laptop that night. Pan's Labrinth was our feature presentation and I had never seen it before, i really enjoyed it. I loved listening to all the spanish and being able to understand it a bit. I understand it more than Swedish still. ;) We set out Sunday Morning to Find the Leiv Erikson statue replica that is also found in Seattle. So i was the leader for that since, it's what i wanted to see, and yes you can say i failed at getting us there. We walked all around outside of town by the water to see it but we missed it by a couple road signs, that i must of still been sleeping when we were walking because we walked right by them. Yes Sean and Brooke made fun of me after we came back at 3:00 in the afternoon to see it again. It was getting time to get to the Crown Jewels so we continuted down the Jeti but kind of came to a dead end where the train tracks cross the water back into town. So we didn't want to walk all the way around so we jumped the fence and ran across 5 or 6 different train tracks. It was very exciting actually and Brooke and I felt like such badasses! ;) We continued with our badass selves to see the Crown Regalia and Brooke wanted to take a picture inside of the jewels, but of course it's against the rules. So she took one without the flash and in the next 10 seconds there was a security gaurd walking up behind us to protect the crown of the king of NORWAY! Trondheim is where all the royalty has been crowned in Norway. At the Archbishops palace they had all the original artwork from The Cathedral including sculptures from the outside of the building. There was the orginal flooring of the Mint where archeaologist found the tiles and room of where the coins where made. So much OLD stuff! there was original walls fromt he original palace that was there. The Cathedral was just as gorgeous as you'd imagine it to be. It is an Evangelical Lutheran Church, but it wasn't always; it used to be a Catholic church. There was soooooo much detail into everthing there it was unbeleiveable. There are 57 statues on the outside of the building alone; of differetn saints, apostles, disciples, and of course Jesus. After we had finished seeing everything we could in town, we thought we would try to find the Statue again from the beginning of the day. I let Sean lead the way and of course he got us there with out a problem. We were freezing from the Ocean wind but it was a perfect end to our adventure in norway. We all peered out into the ocean where Leiv Erikson first departed from to go to America. During my adventures here, it really has been a mind opening experience and at the same time it makes me wish i could stay longer here because there is just so much more to discover in Europe and the world. But it also gets me really excited to be home soon and back in the company of people i love.

11-14-2008 I leave for Norway in the morning, and I am waiting on laundry again right now. Only a month and three days until I am home in Seattle again. I have been really enjoying soaking up the moments I have here in sundsvall. Our video project we have been working on is coming along slowly, it's what keeps me busy. There are so many people I am enjoying getting to know here. My thanksgiving dinner the attendees consists of a German, a Peruvian, an American, an Irish guy, two Kurdish and one Nepalese man. Now where else will you find a Thanksgiving table like that. My camera is totally broken down now, so I'll be buying a new one this Monday when I get back from Trondheim. They have some pretty good Canon's in town with a 4 gig card. Looking forward to my new life I'll be creating at George Fox. It gets me all excited to start somewhere fresh again and begin meeting new people again. This Christmas I have almost a month off of getting back from Sweden and before school starts in Oregon on January 12th. I turn 21 on the 11th of January and that is so weird to me. Time is such a weird thing. It's overwhelming thinking about all the things in life I need to do when I get back to my life back home. It really scares me having to wake up to my reality back home again and struggling to get back into the swing of it. I know my friends and family will be there to help me with my mini culture shock transition. This video for class is a long project where we are supposed to do video blog updates for our audience. Esse a dear friend of mine, is playing our leading role as a stuck up supermodel who lives a selfish life.

Helsinki, Southern Finland, Finland

Just got back from Finland yesterday and it was a great trip! I have never taking a cruise ship that you sleep on and we did this on the way to Helsinki. We departed from Stockholm harbor at around 4:30pm and arrived in Helsinki around 9:45 the next morning. This was a fun time getting to know all my fellow german travelers who joined me on the trip with Eija. Eija is the Finnish girl who was going home to see her family and offered to show a few of us around the city.  She was very informative and helpful with getting around the city. Any way, on the boat we danced the night away and watched kareoke. We had a fun night exploring the ship and shopping in the tax free shop! When we arrived in Helsinki we got out bus passes for three days and our wallets full of Euros before we started our adventure. We had to go about 15 minutes outside of Helsinki to get to Eija's boyfriends family extra apartment. We were all kind of wiped out, and went to the grocery store to buy food for the next few days. This was when I was really thinking about Mom and all the times we have traveled together somewhere and i never had to worry about money or paying for a meal. She would take care of me always and i never knew how nice it was until i have had to start paying for my own food when traveling.  It was pouring down raining when we first arrived so we didn't get to really walk around the city area at first, but Eija took us on a lovely walk around her little community around the apartment. It had a lake near by and a few old buildings of the Old Town Helsinki. She said that two different kings have moved the city of Helsinki farther to the Harbor so that's why the old town was so far outside of the down town area. Our next day in the city was a little dryer and we were out the door to see the city. We started at right of the heart of the city at the huge Lutheran Cathedral that is the icon of the city. We were not allowed to go inside for it was the hour of their daily prayer they held and during that hour there were no tourists allowed. The building was so beautiful, it astonishes me wherever i go at all the detail they put into all their architecture here. We went to a huge Russian Cathedral that was build when Russia took over finland for 100 years. The inside was so amazing, it had so intricate paintings all over. They had a special coffin that was chillin in there to just resemble Christ dying and rising from the dead. I thought that was pretty interesting. I picked up a russian coin outside the church because they had just had a wedding earlier on that day, I guess they throw the coins as the bride and groom come out of the church. We then went to the Harbor where we took a ferry across to a tiny island outside of Helsinki. At this island there was famous ruins that were built to protect the city from invaders. There was also a little Market Hall at the Harbor that looked almost just like the underground of Pike Place Market. When we got on the Ferry to head back to Stockholm, it was like a dream. We went to the top deck so we could see the whole city. It was so surreal seeing Helsinki fade into the distance and the amber sun glowing on it. It was gorgeous and we sad in silence freezing in the wind, watching the sun go down over the Sea. I was soaking up each mintue as it passed by. Can't beleive how blessed I am to be leaving the Harbor of Helsinki Finland!So today was an exciting day because the local newspaper from Sundsvall called me and said they would like to meet with me to interview me about being an international student at Mid Sweden University. So I will be meeting with them tomorrow for lunch and they will be taking my picture. How crazy is that? Then also today we pitched our ideas for our movies in our narrative forms of media class, and the class voted on three movie ideas they would like to create. Mine was one of the three picked, so I will be directing our 10 minute long short film that I created. We will be working on these films for the rest of the semester and they will be viewed as a final exam at the end of the semester. It was quite an exciting day for me today and I couldn't beleive all that was happening for me! I'll share my movie idea with you all in my next entry. My fingers are kind of tired from typing now. :) Life is great and it's amazing being in Sweden. It was lovely coming home to Sundsvall, it has become a great place for my home and I am loving every minute i am here. I am learning so much that i can't even put it into words!  I just know that every college student should study abroad atleast once in their life. I have grown so much and can't wait to come home and share it with the rest of the people i love in the world!

We had our first snow in Sundsvall about 4 days ago! it was beautiful, it started in the middle of me walking home from town and it was like a magical movie scene! Last thursday was the start of the festivities for the Halloween weekend in Sundsvall! An american girl here named Willie hosted an evening for all the international students and she had a pumpkin carving contest and bobbing for apples. Brooke and I worked on a pumpkin together where we had cute ears on it and i did the eyes! i was the masked zorro for that night, my room mate had the mask around her aparment so i just grabbed that. Brooke and i were not the winners of the contest but we had sooo much fun taking out all the pumkin guts and seeds. there was some other international student who were like what the heck are they doing, and even one german girl wanted to do it with brooke and i, but once she saw how messy it was she bailed on the idea.  Jana requested we bring her the insides of the pumpkin so she and i could make some pumpkin bread. So my actual halloween evening on friday consisted of an evening of baking with my good friend jana. She and i were all ready to make the bread and then realized that she had no yeast, so i came prepared with a recipe for pumpkin cookies. Then we needed vanilla extract for the cookies, but i guess swedish people don't use it cause i could not find any vanilla extract in the store. (after looking for half an hour, i forget how much harder it is to find something when it's not in english. :)  So we improvised with our cookies and did what we could. they came out as a very gooey tecture but we were pretty proud of ourselves for what we were able to compromise with. The recipe asked for chocolate chips, but they didn't have any dark chocolate chips for jana's lactose allergy, so we bought a dark chocolate bar and smashed it up for chocolate chips! we felt so creative! We both are enjoying the cookies in the stores called pepparkaka! it's a lot like a ginger snap but very very thin and crunchy. It's delicious to eat with tea! Saturday night was the school halloween dance party. I was a flight attendant for that evening. I bought the dress at the local second hand store and the rest i kind of just through together. We are busy working on our Movie for our narrative forms of media class. This and Swedish language is what i'll be working on for the next 3 weeks. Elections are tomorrow and the local tv station just called me about meeting with me today to talk to me about it.  They will film me while asking questions about being an american in sundsvall during elections. that'll be interesting, because i don't talk about politics at all. I'm proud of the fact that i did vote this year though, i think it was more exciting for me because i can see how much of a privelage it is for me to have a say in the midst of a foreign country.  It's just been hard for the past few months, because nearly every swedish person i have met has asked me about my political views and then yell at me about how much they dislike America and what they have done and i am so excited for it to be over and a new president to be chosen. Yesterday I booked my plane tickets and train tickets to Rome and Paris. I will be traveling to Rome on December 10th and then go to Paris after that on the 13th. I'll fly from Paris back to Stockholm on the 17th and then fly back to Seattle on the 18th. I can't beleive time is flying by so fast. I am planning my Thanksgiving Dinner here, because it's not celebrated here, i'm going to plan a dinner for all my friends and show them how we do it in America. It was -6 degrees C last night and all the sidewalks were frozen with ice, it was quite tricky walking around in high heels on.

Yesterday was Sunday and it was such a lovely day for me! It kind of really made me miss home but it got me really excited about my short time I have left here and all that I still want to do while I am here.  Saturday night I spent the night at one of my best friends here. Her name is Jana Fischer and she is the most fun person to be around! Saturday I was getting a bit of a cold from lack of sleep from Friday night, and she gave me extra socks and tucked me into bed on her couch in her living room. After a 12 hour long nights sleep her and I were awake and ready to bake. We had to go to the grocery store for lactose free butter for her and brown sugar. I found a recipe for "monkey bread" (bananabread) and we sang and danced away in the kitchen as we mixed the ingredients together. We talked about life and family and seeing them all for Christmas!!! She shared some new R&B and gospel music with me that is brand new to my ears. I told her i'll find some good country music for her. ;) She lives in Germany and we both know we'll be visiting each other some day. Her father lives in Phoenix so i told her i could definitely make a trip down to see her next time she's there. Jana is such an admirable person to me because she has gone through a lot of stuff in her life and has had some crappy stuff happen lately but still she is the most smiley person in Sundsvall!!!When i got home from a very relaxing day with my good friend, I had just got online to see if Leif was ready to chat, when my Dad called. We got to talk for about 6 minutes and it was a very special 6 minutes. He told me how much he loved my pictures and thought i was a great photographer. We talked about being home for christmas and getting to see each other soon. then i got to talk to the love of my life for a couple hours and it's such an amazing life we have! Time is flying and in almost a month and a half i'll be home. I'll be leaving to go find a halloween costume soon Parri and I have talked about taking the train to southern sweden for the next few days and staying there until saturday and come back to sundsvall for our halloween celebration here. She has a boy "friend" there who we'd be staying with and he'd be showing us around.

Yesterday I got back from a 4 night trip to London with two friends from Mid Sweden University. We traveled with Ryanair which is a very cheap airline within Europe. Our Train tickets to get to Stockholm to catch our plane were more money then that ticket to fly. I traveled with an American from Clarskville Tennessee named Brooke Denny, and a Canadian from New Brunswick who is called Sara Ellick. The three of us in our days in London really were pressed to our patience and learned how different of people we are from each other. There was a friend in London that I knew from Green River and her name is Claire Norcross, she said we could probably stay at her place for a couple of nights, which is what we were really excited about. So we cancelled our hostel for the first two nights and kept it for the last two nights. When actually got to London at 2 am, we had no idea how to get to her apartment, so we phoned her from a payphone and luckily the station was near we needed to find. We couldn't get to the correct bus stop, so we just used a cab. Then I learned how much more expensive it was to be in London. 100 American dollars is 51 pounds in the U.K. When we got to the correct station for Claire to meet us at, she walked us to her dorm that was ran by her college. They were not going to let us in because you needed to check in visitors by midnight and you were only allowed to have two guests at one time. We were almost homeless in London for our first night but Claire was nice with her words and he let us stay there. We slept in her one room dorm on the carpet floor with one comforter to share with all three of us. Sara and Brooke slept at one end and I slept at the other end with my feet between them. It was a quite interesting first night in London. The Next Day Claire was so helpful to us and we were so grateful for all that she did for us. We wanted to first take a big bus tour around London to see all the sites first thing. She helped us with buying our Tube cards to take the subway there, and with where we could buy our bus tour tickets. But first thing we had to do was to call the hostel in Russel Square to try an rebook our two night there so we had a place to stay for the next 3 nights. They re booked us but it was a little bit more than before, so that was a learning experience. So on our way through the city of London on our first day we took the tube to Picadilly circus. But first I must tell you that I almost broke one of the tube card machines, because I tried to slide it through and you were not supposed to do that because it was meant for actually tickets, you are just supposed to scan your tube card. So in the middle of tons of moving people the technicians for the machines had to take it apart to get my tube card out of the machine. It was such a graceful start to our busy journey through the unfamiliar city. We got to picadilly circus and got on our double decker bus tour. It took us all around the city, to all the great sites at one time! Our Tour guide was sooo funny! He made the tour very memorable. We got off at St. Pauls Cathedral where we ate lunch on the steps of the church. It was gorgeous weather for us! All three days there was barely any clouds in the sky! After we mingled around St Pauls for a while, we got back on the tour bus where it took us to the Tower of London, and we got to drive over the Tower Bridge! I did a video of that moment and it is the only video I took the whole time. We tooka cruise boat tour down the river that we got for free with our tour bus ticket. Then we got off at Westminster Abbey, where i took about a million pictures of big ben! The Next day we were up and outside Madamme Tausadds Wax Museum at 9:30 in the morning. This museum was SOOOO fun! it was amazing getting to pose with so many celebrities. From there we walked down to Oxford Street to check out the shopping, and then we made our way down to buckingham palace. We didn't get to see the changing of the guards, but we did see some visitors of the queen leaving the palace, so that was exciting getting to see some action. It was soooo surreal to imagine that i was just a few feet away from the royal family and where they live. Something i wish i would of done was go see the Princess Diana Memorial. After that we walked down through Hyde Park and sat in some lawn chairs for about an hour, eating our snacks and talking about how crazy it was we were spending the day in London! Sara had the idea to go see Shakespeare's Globe, this was omething i was not as interested in doing, but i am so glad that i ended up doing it with the girls. It was SO interesting getting to see a re make of it. They were having a performance the next night as an opera there.
