Hey hey! An eventful ish last couple of weeks in our lives, but nothing too deadly exciting for you guys who actually bother to read this, Yes, I'm talking about you Nan and grandad and the hard core few, we know who you are.OK, until this week, I was gonna put in some humbling response about the cricket, and trust me England fans, it's much more painful here in Aus, with some serious Pom bashing, than it is back home where you can pretend it's not happening. Especially when you work in a bar, and then you wonder why people pick up accents quickly. Anyway things have got better, so lets not jinx the little bit of respect we have managed to gain back.We spent the middle of Jan, getting into our swimming, and seeing the Brown family before they returned back to sunny UK. We spent a day in the city, visiting the excellent aquarium, and then did the oz speed boat on the harbor, where we got very wet, for some unknown reason we didn't where the macs they offered us!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still Pascal kept us spinning around, and the views were just awesome.The following week we headed down to Jamberoo with the Browns, Pearlie and Meg. Wave pool, slides, tobaggon rides and lazy river rides....... Of course I'm way to grown up for all that, hum.I also mananged to scab a Friday night off by snapping a champagne glass, and driving the stem into my hand. I know some people will just simply do anything to get off work and watch Australian idol at home on his own. By the way, is it ironic that an Irish man won Aussie idol?! Since then, I managed to find a good Vindaloo, which is kinda difficult  down under, and there was some serious burn involved, and of course plenty of beers with some of the reprobates from the AB. Why is it that hospitality staff have the least respect for bar rules, even though they spend most of the time moaning about the customers doing the same thing.We had the public holiday of Australia day, and the long weekend, which involved a lot of Aussies drinking for the nation, and who are me and Kate but to ensure that these guys don't go thirsty. Our house hunting had some what stagnated a few months ago, but by pure chance Peter who I work with had a spare room down in Newtown, which is near Sydney university and a good location. So we departed from our beloved Beach, and are now down in the trendy Newtown, East to west. The bonus of finding the best Thai food since Thailand, a 42inch TV screen in the apartment, and a dishwasher have lessoned the blow of no beach life. Its the little things. So settling into Inner West life, and sharing with a room mate, and trying not to weird out to much. I went Paint-balling with guys from work a few weeks ago, and got pummeled, and possibly fired an illegal shot at one of my managers in the back, ooohhggppss. Also got the perfect becks pour on a schooner at work, from a secret becks rep, and $50 bucks bonus. Lots of immigration stuff for me at the moment, blood tests and deposits in cups, all very expensive and exciting in general.We both capped of the other week with a stinker on Tuesday, with Kate on a very delayed Christmas party, and me at a managers leaving party, and maybe some karaoke!! The proclaimers never fails and don't you forget it. Hope the snow didn't give you guys back home to much hassle.Last weekend we hit Good Vibrations in the city,  Snoop Dog, Razel and Jurassic 5 went off, we aren't too old just yet. Sun and hip hop baby. PS. Emsey have you put on weight?Important note to Brits, you must do jager bombs when out next. half a red bull in a glass, drop a shot glass full of jagermeister into it and neck it in one. Will send you on one guys.

Coogee, Sydney, Australia

Hello to One and All and Happy New Year!Hope you are all good and had a great Xmas and NYE. Life continues here in sunny Oz, Danny and I are good and enjoying Sydney life. We are still living in Coogee by the beach and are full of new year resolutions to swim 3 times a week - which we have just about succeeded in so far. There is a great olympic sized sea water pool near us that is awesome to swim in. While doing lengths there are fish, shells and sea urchins to look at and once I even saw an octopus. Sure beats the hair bands and plasters in the other pool!I got accepted to Sydney Uni last week to do the Masters so looking forward to being a student again but a little nervous too. Will be really good to learn again but I hope I haven't forgotten everything I used to know and can still write assignments and revise.Both Danny and I are still working in the same bars and Danny is now one of the longest members of staff and training others on cocktails. It's been very hectic over Xmas and New Years with everyone toasting the silly season with drinks. This is our second Xmas away and again with the hot weather - am loving the weather but doesn't feel like Xmas as we don't have 75 jumpers on and red noses (well maybe mine is still red). Had a really great Xmas with almost whole family in Woonona, with tree, prezzies, stockings at 7am and kids hyped up on sugar - awesome. An amazing dinner on the veranda, heaps of prezzies and sparkly and everyone was still talking to each other at the end! Working in bars is still as crazy as ever, we see the best and worst of people and are still on UK time. Every night there are people singing, shouting, not making sense, swearing and throwing drinks but also there are lovely people being friendly, tipping heaps and proposing! I love the work but think I want to swap the drunken animals for the furry kind at some point soon. Every shift funny/sick things happen, last week my place had a similar toilet story as Danny's place, maybe it's the same guy working his way round Sydney - yuk!NYE was unbelievably busy, we only served 4 different cans of drinks, there were 10 of us behind the bar all working flat out and we still couldn't serve people quick enough. Although busy it was really fun and got to watch the fireworks over the bridge at 12. I served till 2am then at 2:30 police on horse back pushed everyone out of the Rocks and by 3am the streets were spotless! All the staff then went out for our NYE and stayed out till lunch time the next day. As Danny and I were working in different areas we didn't see each other till we got home the next day, slept and then got up to work again. Can't complain at $40 an hour though. The whole country has gone ashes mad, there are adverts on the tv all the time about tonk-a- pom, pommie bashing posters and even a new extra cold beer launched (a pomms worst nightmare apparently!). There is even a huge counter in Taylor Square with 'complaints so far' about how cold the beer is which is currently 5.5 million. Not helped by the 5-0 thrashing oh and the 20/20 defeat too - oh well there is still the rugby! Tom Chamberlins Mum and Dad were over here to watch the ashes, and Danny was both lucky enough and unlucky enough to watch the final day of the last test. Historic, and slightly humiliating. You guys back home have no idea how much crap Danny takes at work. Good with the bad! Just a little good would be nice. Although both of us miss traveling, one of the good things is catching up with new music. Just before Xmas we saw the Datsuns with Boris which was rock face worthy and we are going to the 'Good Vibrations' festival soon. Sydney is in full summer swing with the Glebe festival, Rocks night market and soon live music everywhere for Australia Day. All great fun, hectically busy and plastic cup central.Danny had his grand opening of his bar the other week with a huge media people tab behind the bar, which I think got drunk very quickly. His place is trying to attract a different clientele with jazz bands, Heineken poker tables, James Bond Vesper cocktail nights and now even a Bett Middler impersonator - not sure who they are trying to attract!As family are still over at the moment it has been a great excuse to do all the touristy things in Sydney. This week we've been to Taronga Zoo which is one of the best Zoos I've been too. It is always depressing seeing animals in captivity but they are at least involved in conservation projects and the enclosures are bigger than most. We miss you all, write soon and shouting a big C'Ya's later in our increasing Aussie lilts! xx

Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia

So the last few weeks have been work, play and more work, with just the odd memory scar along the way. Mark, or Boris has arrived in Aus and turned up at a very inconvenient time in the morning with a friend called Jill. Mark hadn't had the best of it, as they got robbed in Thailand and his eye was swollen badly, but when is Boris ever really happy. I have suffered several random incidents over the last three weeks that have added a little colour to life in Australia. One of our regulars got banned in the pub, but continues to come back to abuse management every now again, either because she likes the drama, or more likely because she is so drunk she has forgotten the banning. Anyway, she's punched poor Jon, calling him racist (yes she is English!). and chucked coffee all over another manager Tony, he smelt like coffee for the rest of the evening.Hum, a couple of toilet incidents, one in the trousers in the poker room, and a secondary incident on the floor in the men's toilet, unleash the hose. Probably enough on that subject, and probably not the sort of colour stories your after.I got abused by a random crazy at a bus stop, who called me names not repeatable other than in private e-mails for no apparent reason. Oh, and when waiting at the bus stop at 2am, a car pulls up, young guy in the front, winds down his window (mc voicing)"you know what the difference between me and you, is that I'm in a car, and your stuck at a bus stop at two", car screeches away, and I am left put in my place by mc hammer.Generally, really enjoying working in the Ancient Briton, and have made some good friends there. It's good to get to know the regulars, although have to take a minor amount of pom bashing, but you know I give as good as I get. I have a couple of Irish regulars who keep daring the other to come up to the bar in odd clothing. Man in flipper, face mask and snorkel for a 4 pint round, or a man with a hoover on his back, because he's a ghost buster! Huge generalization for which I'm sorry, but the Irish shore can drink!Went out to see my good friend Amber in a Blues Burlesque, which she was awesome in, where she played Polly Peachum, no idea how to spell it, on Spinners Rowe. Such a superstar, "it's a real bloody corker" (or at least thats what the flyer said). Mo-vember, a charity set up by a big tached cricketer from the old school, where people get sponsored to grow a mo or tache in Novemeber for prostate cancer, there's some beauts about, I shall take a picture of my mangers little catapillar mustache for the next blog. Like the Grand National back home, Melbourne cup here is a massive event, and is even a holiday day down in Melbourne. It is held on Tuesday the 7th November, and is a 3 min flat race, which everyone bets on, although I didn't caus I was in a bad mood that morning, and was glad, caus I was going on a horse to win, but my horse come second by a nose. Our pub was rammed after lunch time, and a lot of people take a half day at work (not sure weather there allowed to or not). Most people are dressed up, and the big hats are out, see how good I look. Kate on the other hand slept through the whole affair, after a late night out. Naughty Naughty. So I celebrated my b-day, with some cocktails, shots and a few beers in the AB, before heading to the The Cross, for a few neat side steps, which was good fun. Kate brought me a cocktail kit for at home, which may have been a very shrewd move on her part.After a day of sleep after my b-day, managed a day to the cricket between New South Wales and England with Tony, Claire and her husband Johnny. We had a great day, apart from some rain in the morning, and got to watch England batsman, against Lee and McGrath from the Aussie pace attack, as well as listening to a small section of England fans singers and upsetting some of the aussie crowd. Pies and Beer, it's a good combination. The night after that, I was both happy and shocked when Kate, Pearlie and Meg surprised me with a windy picnic over looking Sydney harbour, really ramming home the decision of where we've decided to live, and how welcome Kates family have made me feel. On the way home we had a quick pint in Scruffy Murphys, whre we got suckered into cockroach racing, and papper airplane contests. Kates cockroach came 3rd, Boris airplane came last! Anyway, we are both feeling much more comfortable and making Sydney home (at least for the near future). It should be noted that the owner of my bar, found my travelog the other day, so I should probably be censoring more, but the truth is so much more fun.Everone else, The AB in glebe, the best bar in Sydney, there you go, free advertising.Miss you guys, big shout out to emzy, and you know why!oh, yeah, is it possible for a 4 year old to cry for 56 mins and 30 seconds on a bus for coogee to glebe, answers on post card please.

Coogee, Sydney, Australia

Hello Everyone,How are you?, where are you?, what have you been doing?, would love to catch up with all of you.....Danny and I are fine and still living by the beach with the weather getting warmer. Working lots but still skint, guess that's always the way and getting itchy feet for traveling already and haven't even started my course yet! Settling into a different routine now and enjoying things like eating home cooked food, watching films and discovering some of the things Sydney has to offer. There is a beautiful walk to Bondi from Coogee with lots of photo ops and beaches to swim at. Drinking at cafes and still trying to avoid all the cakes and cookies on offer and meeting new people. It was our 4 year anniversary recently (scary) so we went to trendy Newtown for noodles, Danny's bar for pool and pints and then went for cocktails at Minus 5, the ice bar. Tables, chairs, walls even glasses made of ice and lots of ice sculptures everywhere - very cool (ouch). We were dressed up in thermals, furry coats and 2 pairs of gloves. Surprisingly no cameras allowed in and you're charged for the picture they take! Then chips and sparkly at the Opera house for sunset - Danny knows the way to my heart!The weathers very mixed and changes from windy and cold to 37 degrees but the sea views are amazing and never the same. Unfortunately we spend about 2 hours on the bus getting to and from work. On hot sticky days with that lovely 100 body odors combined smell and bus politics. Who sits where on the bus and seat hoggers - you know who you are! The plan is maybe to move to Newtown or Glebe but it will be hard to leave the beach.Working in the pub is fun but crazy on Friday and Saturday nights as its rammed. Working till 3:30am serving singing suits. When you go out you think everyone feels the same as you and only when your sober and everyone else isn't do you realize how stupid everyone is when they drink! Doesn't stop us going for a quick beer after work though!Well enough from me over to Danny, hope you are all good and hope to catch up with you soon. Kate :)Ohh almost forgot my claim to fame, met Neil Moressesey when he came into my pub last week - very exciting!So work, work and more work, sound familiar. Pubs are strange entities, and create there own weird little world. The old man regulars in the day which hit our two hour happy hour. (On schooners, although we do serve pints. if you want smaller than a schooner, you order a midi ( a mouthful) and apparently there is now one in between called a smidi, madness). Keep the regulars happy, by remembering what beer they drink, although you look a little bit of a Wally if you start pouring there larger and there actually getting up to leave the pub.In gamming, I have the famous Johnny, 4ft 8, has a massive picture of him down in glebe, put up by the council. By about 5 I can't understand most of what he says, but he seems happy. In New South Wales only 25% of the pub is allowed to be smoking, in our pubs case, this is the pokey room. There is full ban coming. People who play the pokies must be the most addicted people on earth, 3 sugars in coffee, 60 ciggys a day, larger and gambling, and there's no need to move, unless you need the toilet, caus supper Danny will wait on you, with comp drinks.Two weeks ago, in Australia it was sports grand final weekend. Now AFL (aussie rules) is the number one support in Victoria (Melbourne), over half the team are from that area, but no Victoria teams in the final, instead in had Sydney in it. Now on the other foot NFL (rugby league) is centered in Sydney, and had no teams from Sydney for the first time ever, instead it had Melbourne and Brisbane the final. Anyway there is a lot of beer drunk that weekend. Just for the record I love aussie rules, especially the violence and the mullets.Last week, arrived at work 8 hours early, which was just a tiny little bit embarrassing. The week before that we went out for a couple of cheeky raspberry vodkas for Holly's b-day in glebe, who I work with, I felt a little choice the next day.Differences about Australia: There is a tendency to shorten word even more that we do, sunnies, chardy, cab sav, more examples dissert me, but find my self constantly confused, which I know is not that big a shock to those of you who know me. Squash, is a drink like real lemonade, lemon lime bitters, has bitters in it, which i can't describe and had never heard of beore, and dry, means dry ginger ale. If you go for "a quick slap", this is playing on the pokies, not anything more seedy. I like being called "brother" all the time by customers or "bro" if their from New Zealand, but I dislike being called "champ" or "champion", although I have no logical reason for that. Aussie TV, much like the states has so many adverts in drives me crazy aaaaagggggghhhhhhh.Enjoying life, working hard, settling in, and looking forward to the summer, enjoy the cold....

So as for our not so interesting travelog, how's it going every body! I have a cold I am working hard, it's a long way down from traveling, but there's lots of exciting (as well as humiliating) new things about Australia to tell you. I am working in the AB (Ancient Briton) Hotel in Glebe, with it's very appropriate name for me. It's just had a 6 million dollar referb, and i'm there full time. Glebe is a bit of a mission on the bus, but I'm used to long bus journeys now, and I'm settling into my first ever bar job nicely. Kate is working in the Observer Hotel down near the rocks (rocks is by the Sydney harbour bridge, and is one of the oldest areas in Australia, with lots of old school buildings, very touristy. What a view she has every day on the way to work, again a bit of a mission by bus. Please note, a hotel is not a hotel it's a bar, I know it doesn't make sense, I think they all use to be hotels, anyway.................I am sure I've mentioned this before, but Australia, and in particular New South Wales, is obsessed with gambling, and every "Hotel" you walk into has at least a few pokies (poker machines, or fruit machines). NSW has more pokies than Nevada (Vegas) and is second only to Vegas in gambling output. Note: people come from all over the world to gamble in Vegas, in NSW, it's Australian gambling. It's heavily taxed, and makes the government a fortune. I heard that after taxes, gaming cuts, and promotions the average hotel makes about 40 000 quid a year (average), this does not include the big clubs (RSL) which have hundreds. My hotel, has a gaming room, with about 30 pokies, and I serve them drinks all day (coffee and soft drinks are free). This can and probably is one of the work lows in the world, it's between the gambler an the machine, and I'm just a pain in the arse who distracts them for a minute. People are there from when we open till when we close. Many old ladies make it for pension day, and one lovely one said to me "I don't mind if I win or lose, it just gets me out of the house". Anyway two days in that room a week, is enough to keep anyone from gambling.I've also had a couple of cocktail making and drinking sessions at work, and I'll be on the cocktail bar up stairs, see the photo, the bar is made of a fish tank. Other than that, in the day remember what your regulars drink (most popular VB (victoria bitter) schooner (aussie size bit smaller than a pint, although we do sell pints).Kate works in a touristy bar, which is much busier in general to mine, and getting busier as the summer closes in. Pints are common in her bar, with kilkenny and Guiness being very popular. she also normally has to hear over the loud music thats on every night, can get fairly rouwdy. she is not allowed to drink in her own bar, unlike me.Anyway embarrassing story. Is the travelblog incriminating? Went out for a few (only a few) drinks after work for Mike (A friends) b-day, was tucked up in bed by 12, Kate was away down the coast. I wake up (presumably having slept walked), outside of my building in my boxer shorts agggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! The toilet is outside our room, so I maybe made a wrong turn, no excuses, I am locked outside, it was blowing a gale, I'm freezing. I try to barge the door, a couple of times after knocking, the glass in the payne smashes, can you believe it, still nobody comes out, so I scramble over a few walls round to the back, I try the back door, possibly in a little bit of a panic, banging on Carl's window, and cooing Carl, let me in, let me in, Eventually and trust me it felt like forever, he woke up and let me in, looking just a little bit shocked. I did not admit any of this to my land lady, and to be honest both me and carl woke up thinkin it was a dream. That was until I saw the glass, bugger, humiliated, and possibly the reason for my current cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!On a lighter note, had a big knees up with Carl at the weekend as he and Laura are heading on up the coast. Yega bombs, yegmeister shot glass dumped un un-cerimoniously into a glass of red bull. It was messy and great fun, but Kate and I are on a serious detox. Kate went out with Laura for a girls night for her leaving with loads of food, wine and dancing and also met a good animal conservation contact.Haven't heard from a lot of people recently, and hope your all really well.lots of lovethe gruesome two some.

Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia

Hello and welcome to blog #2!When we first arrived back in Australia my family, Pearie and Meg put us up again (thank you!) and we spent a day or two getting over the jet-lag. Danny gave into the sleep need on the first day and so spent hours in the middle of the night playing Championship Manager for almost a week!We are now officially Sydney-Siders as found a cosy (aka small) place in Coogee after looking at some shocking places. The first day here it was about 30 degrees so went to the beach and sampled the night life. Coogee is very beautiful and not far from Bondi and is a mixture of young and old, travellers and non and I think it's possible to get a beer 24 hours a day! Money was starting to get desperate and we were filled with cold dread when looking at our bank balances. We thought bar work would be a good way to earn some dollars, so with the 2 courses necessary to serve alcohol and work with pokies (fruit machines) under our belts we decided to do a 4 day bar and cocktail course. This was loads of fun, we made cocktails and then drank them as well as practicing to serve and met some great people. Before we had even finished the course we both had jobs lined up, yay! No vinegar sandwiches for us, we have food!So we are settling into work and getting to know Coogee and doing exciting things like cooking food and washing up (it's been a while!). Danny went to the Races on Saturday in the very posh members only section, not sure how he pulled that off but had a good time (read got blind drunk and was in bed by 9pm). We miss everyone and hope this blog means we can keep in touch.... write soon and keep smiling xxxxxxx

So this is it, we have officially finished the travelling thing and are heading for domesticity! No more globe-hopping flights, long bumpy bus journeys, scary driving, strange and wonderful food, foreign beers and generally making a nuisance of ourselves around the world! We have had some amazing times and were really glad to share some of the stories and pictures with you. We are moving into an apartment near Carl and Laura at Coogee beach this week, and will be job hunting next. I suppose more adventures to come, or at least hope and we both hope you've enjoyed our logs. The last 3 weeks of our stay in England, were both surreal, exciting, hard work, drunken, expensive and ultimately sad and happy all the same time. Weekdays were spent working hard painting and decorating in London, and although hard, is very satisfying being able to see what a difference you've made. The work was vital for us to be able to even afford to be able to be back here at all. Weekend 1: finishing late on Saturday, we head straight for a good old knees up in south London near where I was born, for a part in New Cross, dirty beats, drunken smiles, and north London crew, what else could a couple of dip sticks ask for. I managed to make it to the pub the next day at around midday (straight from the party), what a mistake to make!Weekend 2: st. neots time, Thursday, Donna's party, wrestlers (pub), Colin and Emsey arrive, very late night, dancing in my brother front room being the highlight, blocking entry for his friends into his flat, a lowlight. Friday, night in with the married couple and Donna, was quite lairy still. Sat, head to Cambridge, met up with Tom, Kates fire spinning friends from the midlands, Boris and another tom get in on the act, and ultimately all ends in crazyness and pain getting up in the morning. Friday meet up with the lovely Linda, where we contemplate karaoke, and what a light weight she is. Monday, the legend that is Ed makes lunch, and it must be said he is a terribly nice chap, for a Charlton fan. 3-1.Weekend 3: Thursday, tequila it makes us all act like four year olds, Danny, Colin, Emsey and katey, muchous funnios, and Kate left with some suspect pillow bashed injuries, and the neighbors down stairs left complaining. Friday, similar to previous, but on a larger scale, and more complaints from down stairs. sat, somehow make it to central London, after no sleep, spend the day wondering through London, feeling the head pain, my brother flaked at 5, and then I went out for dinner with Kate and her mum and laura, most peoples highlight being the hagen daz restaurant.Leaving England after a day on Hampstead heath with the dog, was harder than last time, and maybe that's to do with the level of appreciation I now have for mine and kates fantastic families, as well as what we were missing with our friends. A few tears were shed, but man points diminishing, we knuckled down, and were looking forward to new challenges.Big shout out to all my special people, you know who you are. xxxxx

Downham Market, United Kingdom

I spent most of the week slaving, that's right whip crack, at my Nan's house, doing some decorating for her. Had a great time, and I don't think I could have a better employer. Turned up with a hangover one morning, and she said, don't worry about it go to bed for an hour or two and then see how you feel. More family business for me. I didn't do it by the way, and that's caus I'm too much of a keen worker incase you were wondering. Kate spent another week slaving away in London, but it's all for a good cause, namely us!Met up with Kate and Boris (from the strange mould) in Cambridge on the Friday night, with the highlight being when I spilt and crushed Pringles everywhere in his room, not a fetish thing, I swear. Without to much detail, big family BBQ on the sat and sun, which my cousins and aunts (martins only) all come up for. I was hoping for some serious attention, but the little bloody baby stole the whole show, characterised by my Nan who only took one photo of me. I'm the number one grandson! Anyway, a great couple of days in the strange very flat world of Norfolk, rubbing with (this is a quote from and MP of Norfolk in the last two weeks, and not my own opinion), the inbreds. How wrong is that, sorry, bit of news worthy information from this part of the world, love Norfolk! FACT! So I hung around for a couple of days more with my parents.Love being back in England, and am trying to see as many people as we can, but work commitments and all, make it sodding difficult.Hope I haven't offended anyone from Norfolk, as it most certainly wasn't meant that way.

Somwhere Near Reading, United Kingdom

After a week for me with my brother in St. Neots, seeing some old pals, bumming around and playing x-box and Kate slaving away painting and decorating down in London. I trained it down to London, and Kate and me got a lift with Luke the night before the wedding to somewhere near Reading. We spent two nights there, and although it was very expensive, we had a wonderful time. Colin and Emsey two of our best friends got married, great ceremony, and no I wasn't crying (maybe a little), and I just didn't want the whole evening to end. But , rather than boring you, just check out the pictures.I can't believe I'm old enough to have friends that are married, I spose I will be 30 soon.
