Seville, Spain

Dear Blog,

Seville was a short 3 hour train ride from Granada through some harsh landscape. It is the major city in the South and is also the home of Bullfighting. unfortunately the season had just ended so we couldn't see a show. We arrived in the afternoon to our Hostel which is a great place. The roomk was big with our own private bathroom. The Hostel had a great Kitchen so we could cook and also a open air terrace on the roof to enjoy the warm sunshine. This time of year is very pleasant because it reaches about 25C but in the middle of Summer it gets over 40C very often and would be sooooooo hot. The first night we sat and chatted to some other Backpackers on the Terrace and we have never met so many people from Melbourne. about 10 or something which is crazy. The next day we went to the Alcazar which is another Muslim Palace and the main home of the Muslim kings for a couple of Centuries. very nice buildings and Gardens. At night we sat up on the Terrace agin having a few drinks and chatting to the Melbourne people. The next day which was yesterday the 10th Nov we went walking around the city and also did a tour of the Bullring. There were no Matadors or bulls but they had a little museum and guide to tell us about the History of Bullfighting. A little cruel and gruesome if you ask me. The city of Seville is quite nice just to get lost in around the narrow streets. Last night we sat on the Terrace again and played some card games before heading out to find some Tapas bars, most of them had stopped selling food but we did find one and got some food at around 1am. Spainards don't actually eat dinner until 10pm. The chidren were even our with their parents at 1am which is so different to home, it was a Saturday night but still. Well this ends our trip to SPain. We will come back one day so we can see more of this fantastic country as we only touched on it and it is very big. We are about to leave and get on a bus for a 6 hour trip to Lisbon in Portugal, our last country before heading back to London and then home.
Granada, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands

Dear Blog,

We headed out from Madrid in the morning on a 6 hour bus ride to Granada in Southern Spain. We arrived in the afternoon around 4pm. The weather was fantastic. a little warmer than Madrid although the weather in Spain is great always. Our Hostel was called Funky Backpackers and was quite funky. We had a tiny room to ourselves in a very sqeeky bunkbed. The Hostel also has a bar on roof with some nice views of town. We had a quite night sitting in the bar drinking a couple of local beers. The following day (6th Nov) we got up early to go to the Alhambra which is a very important historical Palace in SPain as it is the best preserved Muslim 'city' outside od the Middle East. A little History, Spain was actually run by Muslims for a few centuries and Granada still has many buildings with this style of Architecture. The Alhambra is fantastic. The main Palace there is so well decorated. The Gardens around the Palace are beautiful. WE really enjoyed the visit there and luckily it wasn't as busy as we expected. It gets so busy that you have to pre reserve tickets online otherwise you have to stand in line and might not necesarily get a ticket. After the Alhambra we headed back down the hill and to our Hostel for a Siesta before heading up the rooftop bar for some Paella and Snagria. We met some other Backpackers and then went on a Tapas tour. Granada is known for its Tapas culture and most bars you go to give you a free Tapas with every drink that you buy. so basically a little place of something. We had Prawns, little ham and cheese things, the most yummiest grilled squid to name a few and they were all free with a purchase of a beer. I LOVE TAPAS. The meaning of the word Tapas is actually cover as back in the day bar tenders would put bread on top of a customers drink to keep the flies out and it become a Tradition. You don't put them on your glass now, you just get a plate on the side. The next day we walked around the town, Granada is very pretty. There is a street that has lots of Middle Eastern styled shops and Tea houses. We went to a Tea House and has some really nice spicy tea. Again at night we went to the rooftop bar and met the people we had met the day before and we decided to do the Tapas tour again we loved it so much and now we knew were to go, we took some new Backpackers aswell. We had a great night and went to a couple of bars and got back at 3am so a great night was had by all. once again i Love Tapas. Granada was great, mainly because of the free Tapas. Did i tell you that i love Tapas. Next stop Seville
Madrid, Spain

Dear Blog,

I have been a little slack with my blogs lately. Its been a week since we left Madrid so thought i'd better write about it. We took a nice comfy train from Barcelona and arrived in the afternoon on the Friday. The Hostel was ok, we were in a dorm as double rooms were a little expensive. The city is very nice. Not a whole lot of sights but a pleasant city to walk around. On the Saturday 3rd Nov we spend the day walking around. There are these bar/cafe's around the city caled Museo Jamon, Jamon m eaning Ham. hundreds of huge ham legs hang from the roof and walls. You order what you want, maybe a ham and cheese roll and a drink and stand at the bar like a local. On the Sunday they had a huge Trash n Treasure market, its the biggest in Europe and was very busy. we strolled around there for a couple of hours which was great fun. Afterwards we went to a street nearby that is packed with Tapas bars. we basically hopped from one to another over a few hours and drank beer and ate yummy Tapas. My favorite food in the world. We headed back to the Hostel a little weary and had a little rest and then we were hungry again so we went to a place that sells Calamari rolls. The nicest Calamari rings i have ever had stuffed into a bread roll, fantastic. We enjoyed Madrid. next stop Granada.
Barcelona, Spain

Dear Blog,

We arrived in Barcelona Spain after a long day travelling from Switzerland, we had to take a 2.5 hr train to Geneva and then a flight to Barcelona. We arrived at our Hostel at around 7pm. The Hostel was more like an apartment with 5 bedrooms. The place was nice but we lucked out and got the small room without a window and a bunk bed. oh well we won't be spendingf time in the room so who cares. As we arrived at 7pm we headed straight out in search of food. We found this little tavern and it looked bust so we thought we'd give it a try. Well we were in.luck. We had the nicest Spicy potatoes we have ever eaten, some baby octopus and the best part of all. Sngria! for those of you who are not sure what Sangria is, well you have missed out, it is a kind of Red wine punch i guess hard to explain but very nice and refreshing. I had already been intorduced to this drink back in London by our flatmate who makes a mean Sangria. We walked around the town a but and then had an early night. The following day (Tuesday 30th Oct) we got up and went for a walk down the famous La Ramblas, a long boulevard which is full of life. All kinds of funny life statues from Angels to a man sitting on a toilet, crazy but very funny to see. Barcelona is really a great city and has so much to see and do. There are some very unusual buildings bu Gaudi a crazy Architect, they look like they are from a Dr Suess book. for dinner we cooked at the Hostel and then went for a drink at a local bar. On the 3rd day we went to a Museum which had an old Roman city underneath it. Very cool we spend the rest of the day just exploring Barcelonas streets. This night we spent in and ate some ordinary frozen fish and chips, you get what you pay for. The 4th day was a pubic holiday so everyone was out and about and it was a lovely sunny day. We walked through the city park which was nice and then along the city's Marinas and Beach. As this was our last night in Barcelona we ate at the tavern from night 1 and then went to a bar that was run by the people who also run the Hostel. The bar was one of heaps throughout the area we stayed in. The barman gave us a free Mojito and then we bought a VERY strong cocktail made with Chillean rum. It was nice but nasty. This morning (Friday2nd Nov) we got up early for our train to Madrid. which i will write about in 3 nights time. Barcelona was a city that we really loved. It has a great vibe. I think i am going to make a big call and say that Spain is now my favorite country and it will only get better with 3 other cities to visit in this country. I am tired which is why this entry is pretty boring and as always full of grammar mistakes.

me
xx
Interlaken, Switzerland

Dear Blog,

We arrived in Interlaken Switzerland on Thursday evening after a 7.5 hr train ride from the Cinque Terre via Milan. We knew we were near the Alps after getting off the train, it was pretty cold. We checked into our B&B, a cute place with mountain views. The host is fantastic, as soon as we arrived she was helping us plan our days. the best Host we have met in 3 months. As we arrived at night we went in the search of cheap eats, unlikely as Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe. we ended up at Hooters, the American restaurant and had a burger and chips. it was the cheapest place we could find and it still cost alot. The 1st full day we spend walking around Interlaken. The following day we got up early, had a nice breakfast included with our room and began our Journey up to the Jungfrau 'Top of Europe' Interlarken sits at the base of some large mountains and the Jungrafu is the biggest in the region at over 4000m high. The station at the top of this mountain (well near the top) is the highest train station in Europe at 3500m high. We had to get 3 dofferent trains to get to the top and the views all the way were AMAZING. They started off with low lying farmland and valleys, then as you got higher gorgeous little hill side villages with Swiss chalets and Cows with bells, then higher again would be ruggid snowy Mountains until eventually after 2.5 hours we reached the top and you were on Glaciers. Not only is there a station up the top but also restaurants ( extremely expensive) terraces with amazing views, an Ice Palace and Gift shops etc. The high Altitude really hits you. As soon as you got off the train and walk a couple of meters you loose your breath. Walking around made me dizzy, it really is a weird feeling. After a few hours at 3.5km above the sea we headed back down again. It really was an amazing experience. Today ( Sunday 28th oct) was our 3rd day here and we got up early again and got a train to a small town called Lauterbrunnen which is 17km from Interlaken. from there we walked along the Valley floor for about 45 mins to see the massive Waterfalls of Trummelbach. These falls are where the Glaciers from the 3 major Mountains drain. The water gushes down huge tunnels inside the mountain. pretty cool. After the falls we walked a further 45 mins down the valley to the bottom of a mountain cliff where we caught a cable car to the little car free vaillage of Murren. It was very Swiss with Brown Chalets sitting on Green rolling hills. from Murren we walked just over an hour with some amazing views of the Mountains as the train was along the top of the cliff face that overlooks the valley we where earlier. we then caught a cable car back down to Lauterbrunnen and the train back to Interlaken. Tonight we are sitting in the warm room relaxing like we have done all of the nights we have been here as it does get quite cold at night. I have loved Switzerland and i really want to come back some day and see the rest of the country. It is very safe, clean and well run. You can see why it is one of the most livable countries in the world. Tomorrow we are going to Barcelona in Spain.

Here is the link to some of our pics from Switerland, we have also updated the Italy set

http://www.flickr.com/photos/melvic/sets/72157602770882931/
Monterosso, Italy

Dear Blog,

After Rome and Florence we were looking forward to spending a couple of days in the coastal national park which consists of 5 tiny towns known as the Cinque Terre. We took a 2.5 hr train ride from Florence and arrive around lunchtime. We didn't have any accom booked ahead for the first time on our trip. We eventually found a place by walking up the main street of Monterosso. The Villa was on a hill very close to the train station which is handy when you are walking with a broken pack. The room was very nice and cheap too because it is low season. The bed was the biggest King size bed i have ever seen. Vic and i needed to email each other to communicate it was fantastic. also our own bathroom which we don't often have. On the afternoon that we arrived after checking into our room we walked around the small village and down along the beach. It was so nice to be somewhere where there were hardly any tourists ( only because it is end of season) and we could just sit and breath in the fresh air instead of scooter fumes, oh and cross the road without the fear of being run down but a crazy scooter driver. as we didn't have a kitchen we had no choice but to buy dinner so we decided to go to a restaurant ( wow you all say) we had some really good Seafood Spaghetti and some local wine which we enjoyed. We then went for a nice walk and back up to the room for an early night as the next day we were up for a long hike along the Cinque Terre Cliffs between all of the 5 villages, well so we thought. When we woke up we soon realised that the Hike will not be possible, it was raning like crazy. What is wrong with us, why does the rain have to follow us around for our entire trip? Instead we just took the train between the villages which was ok but it was just bucketing down so we gave up and went back to the room and watched DVD;s that Vic sitting on the laptop. I think we watched 4 all up.In the end we didn't end up being able to do what we went to the Cinque Terre for which was the 10km walk along the cliffs as we only stayed for 2 nights. very very dissapointed but what can you do. We hope we have more luck in Switzerland which where we heading to next. A long day on the rails to Interlaken.
Florence, Italy

Dear Blog,

After a busy few days in Ancient Rome we headed to Florence in the hope that it wasn't filled with crazy drivers and hawkers like Rome. Well wishful thinking there. Florence is the largest city in the Tuscan Region. It is quite a nice city with a massive big Catherdral and a few museums. The first day there we walked around the town but nothing much to tell you there. We were both feeling a little down and out due to being attacked by what we now think are Bed bugs. Luckily we had a very comfirtable private room with a nice comfy bed where we could spend some time recouping and that is what we did as the weather in Florence was freezing and wet. The 2nd day after a nice long sleep in we went to the Accademia Museum where the famous statue of Davud lives, and thats all that is there other than some other not very exciting sculptures and paintings. We pais 10euro or $15 auddie to see a nude giant names David, but to be honest the staue is very impressive and we didn't regret going to see it. The detail is amazing and the Statue is apparently all in proportion, including his giant.....feet. After the museum we went to this tiny little \panin bar which sold freshly made rolls and they were cheap and yummy. we also had some extremely nice Gelati, a little on the small size but the taste was amazing. Once again we had another quiet night in eating microwaved soup and rolls. The 3rd day was yet another cold and wet day, we took a bus to the little Tuscan town of Siena, it was a very pretty medivil town which would have been better if the weather was better, story of our trip really. Oh how could i forget Pisa, Siena was day 4, Pisa was day 3. Pisa was a an hour train ride and of course the only reason we went there was for the Leaing Tower. We were actually really impresed the this building. It looks really cool up close and we took some very silly photos which you can see on our website. The only bad thing about Pisa is those annoying people selling crappy fake handbags and watches and these tacky trickets. There are signs up in both Pisa and Florence telling tourists not to by this stuff as it is actually Illegal but they sellers never go away and they almost shove the watches in your face. Anyway Florence was nice, would have been better if the weather was nicer and the Bed Bugs hadn't followed us. Next stop is Cinque Terre.
Rome, Italy

Today we took a train to Naples, the home of Pizza and the Mafia and then straight onto Rome. Our B & B is right across the road from the main train station which is very handy. The room is funny because it is decorated in Retro style so all very 70's and we have all of these little mirrors on our roof. We arrived on Monday around midday and headed straight our to see some sights and we knew Rome would be very full on. We went down to Trevi Fountain where a trllion tourists where standing, sitting, pushing, throwing coins etc and also Hawkers where selling things like bubble makers and other trinkets. who buys these things? anyway Trevi foundtain is massive and a very nice foundtain, we then headed for the Spanish steps which were not that nice at all. Just steps filled with people. we then walked around for a couple more hours and then had some cheap Pasta and went to bed. The 2nd day (Tuesday) we headed to Vatican city, the smallest counrty in the world, yes it is classed as a country even though it is in the centre of Rome.St Peters Basillica is just massive, there was quite a long line to get in but it did move steadily so wasn't too long of a wait. Inside the Church is amazing, we have seen alot of Churches around Europe but this one was definately the biggest. We climbed the Dome for some nice views across Rome. WE then got into yet another long line for the Vatican museum where the Sistine Chapel is located. While in line a man tried to shove a pamohlet into my hands and because i pulled away he swore at me which was quite funny. the Hawkers are very pushy and annoying in Rome, Vic wasn't too impressed with this guy and told him what he thought. You go Vic. Once inside the Vatican Museums are very big and contain many museums. one of course is the very famous Sistine Chapel. It is a work of art and the paintings around the entire chapel are just incredible. not even around the chapel but all of the rooms and filled with art all around the roofs and walls. AFter leaving Vatican city it was definately time for Ice Cream and we has a huge serving of yummo Gelati. we then walked back through via some other old buildings back to our Hostel which is quite a long way but enjoyable. we cooked some pasta for dinner and went to bed early as we were stuffed!! The 3rd day we headed to the most fanous of Rome's ancient sights, the Colloseum. It is a HUGE structure, maybe the size of the MCG but very old, built in 72AD. It was used for mainly inhumane sports and entertainment and held 50,000 spectators. If you have seen the movie the Gladiator then you might have some idea. from the Colosseum we went to Palatine hill, where a very large Palace once stood, and still stands in some parts. This is where Rome started back in 900BC, a few years ago. Rome is sooo old its just hard to comprehend especially being from a country where our oldest buldings are not even 300 years old. Some of these buldings are over 2000 years old. from Palatine we walked around the Roman forum, what would have been a massive big Piazza back in the day and is surrounded by ruins from old Law courts and temples. amazing. we saw a few more sights and were fsirly done byt then so we headed back to the room and the Man who runs our place is a Magician and showed us some pretty impressive card tricks. we then headed to Dinner with him and some guys where are in the other room for some food which was nice and cheap. Today, and it really is today as i write is Day 4 and we went to a nice park in the city which was a change from the tourists, pollution and nutcase drivers here. Zebra Crossings do not mean anything here in Rome, just that if you on a Scooter then you must drive quicker towards a person who is crossing the road, it is seriously scary crossing roads in this city. Now i also need to tell you about the mysterious disease that Vid got and now i have. Just 4 days ago Vic has what looked like bites all over his arms and we thought he had been bitten or maybe had an allergic reaction, but then it spread all over eben onto his face, then lucky for me i started to feel itchy and i have now got these horrible red spots all over me. They are about the size of a 5 cent peice and start off white and then turn Red, and are extremly itchy. There are no other other symptoms though which is strange, we do not know how we got it or what it is only that it must be contagious and we look horrible. They are soooooooooooooooooooooo itchy. Tomorrow morning we are getting the train to Florence and hopefully these spots have gone byt the time i write next.
Sorrento, Italy

We got up early this morning as we had a very long trip to Sorrento Italy from Dubrovnik. As the crow flies it is not that far away, just over the Adriatic sea and across the shin of the boot of Italy. However the only way to get there from Dubrovnik was to Fly via Munich in Germany, which meant taking 2 flights. when we arrived in Naples airport we then had to get a bus which took us straight to Sorrento and was meant to be a 1h20min trip, but i have never seen so much traffic in my life and the roads along the coast to Sorrento are very windey, think Great Ocean road but worse. It was a nice drive but took almost 3 hours with no air conditioning. anyway we finnaly arrived after 12 hours of travelling and checked into our Hostel. The place was interesting as it was on a very large property with its own vegetable gardens and orchards as it was also a cooking school. we had our own room and own bathroom which was nice. The next day we took a train down to Pompei. Just in case you don't know what Pompei is, it is a sight full of ruins from a town that was distroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, actually 10 years prior to the Vocano eruption there wss also a major earthquake so the residents of Pompei didn't have much luck. The area around Pompei is massive and includes some fantstic ruins of buildings, churches, streets with houses and shops etc, and even a large sports ground. The town was only uncovered in the 18th century and was entirely covered in Ash until that time. Archeologists are still excavating and finding things all the time. It is a really fascinating place to visit. That same night we headed back to the Hostel and had a very nice dinner cooked by the students at the school. It was 15 euro for 4 courses which consisted of bruschetta which tomato and pesto for starters, a spaghetti dish that looked like nothing but had the most amazing flavours like chilli, herbs, garlic, lemon etc. Tuna wuth herbs for main and this was the nicest Tuna i have ever had, it was sooooo tender and apparently because it was baby Tuna. then we had a fruit type cake for dessert. was very very yummo. The following day we took a bus down to Amalfi along some of the most mazing coast line we will ever see although the bus ride was a shocker, it was a Sunday so it was sooo busy amd we had to stand most of the way which was a huge challenge when the bus is driving around hair pin bends very close to cliff faces into the sea. Was quite scary at times but amazing at the same time. These bus drivers are very skilled. The village of Amalfi was nice but nothing much. We saw a wedding which was nice and it appeared that the entire village was at the chuch We then headed back along the coast towards Sorrento and stopped off at Positano which was a really nice village on side of mountains on the Sea. It was very nice strolling through the town eating Ice Cream, after that we got back on the very crowded bus and this time we had a maniac driver, plus we were still standing and at times almost sitting on the lady next to me. This night we had some nice Pizza for dinner and headed to bed. Next we are heading to Rome.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

We took a morning flight from Zagreb the capital of Croatia to Dubrovnik, a small town at the very southern tip of Croatia on the Adriatic sea across from Italy. We were picked up from the Bus stop by our Host and taken back to the Villa. This place was pure luxury by our standards. A nice clean room with very comfy beds, ensuite and our own kitchenette. we were happy to be in this room for 4 nights. Dubrovnik is a gorgeous town. It has an Old town with a City Wall that is still fully intact which makes it the most amazing city wall in the world. The old town itself is full of little alleys and completely car free. There are many many restaurants selling mainly Italian influenced foods and some fantastic Gelati to rival the stuff you get in Italy. We did a walk right arounf the City Wall which had some fantastic views out to the sea and over the Town. It was really a great walk. Luckily the weather was nice on the day we did this as it did turn for the worst for 2 days. The 2nd Day which was one of the rainy days we took a little boat out to a small island called Lokum which was about 700m from the town. It had a Forttress a few 'beaches' including a nude one, not that anyone was swimming due to the weather, there were also resident Peacocks. The little island was very nice to walk around and get away from the tourist filled Dubrovnik town. The 3rd day was raining all day and i also had a bad cold so we went down into the town to get some food for lunch and spent the day in our room watching American soaps and making use of the free Wireless Internet. i forgot to mention that our place was located up the hill from the Old town and about 500 steps so it was a nice 15 minute walk going down the steps but a tough 20 plus minute walk going up. We are both getting quite used to walking up stairs etc though so we didn't find it too bad. SO besides the awful weather for half the trip Dubrovnik was a fantastic place and one of the nicest places we have visited on our entire trip. Nest we head to Sorrento in Italy on a very lonf day of travelling.

PS. don't forget to check out the latest photos on our flickr website
