Cork, Ireland

Great to be back in Ireland. Cork city is bustling and bright. The locals speak like their singing (sounds like la-da-di-da-da-di-da ya-now?). I smile alot and wonder whether that was english or gaelic. Spent two days in Killarney, rambling around the beautiful national park.
Paris, France

Hilarious Fawlty Towers episode on first night...very nice french couple arrived in our room around midnight with their own key. Sorted it out in scrambled french. Set out and about the next day in beautiful springtime weather, to seek out the grave of Oscar Wilde in Cimitiere Pere Lachaise. Our plans to revisit the Louvre collided with Labour Day which meant that every man, woman and child in France was on holiday. Ended up spending the day very pleasantly lolling around in Parc Monceau and eating toffee apples. On the last day, went to get our hair done and for one last cafe au lait in Villiers before taking the plane to Ireland.
San Malo, France

Brittany is salty and seafaring. Staying in a little hotel that is like a lighthouse. Dined on seafood and crepes and cider. On Anzac Day I went to a service for members of the Resistance who died in the concentration camps. This is the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the camps.
Zadar, Croatia

Landed in Dubronik on Tuesday evening - feasted on some kind of damper thing with pancetta, mushrooms, tomatoes and basked on the terrace. Woke to a thunder clap the next morning and a torrential downpour so I took the bus north to Zadar. Probably the most scenic bus trip so far, all along the coast, although it was 10pm before I landed in Zadar and found the bus to Borik, a little tourist marina/settlement on the edge of town. Spent today wandering around the ancient walled city which is a series of sparkling white streets with an open air fruit market and a few Roman ruins interspersed.
Dingle, Ireland

Just back from a few days in Dingle, home of Fungie, a dolphin with highly developed social skills. We were wandering down the main street on our first night when a guy carrying a speaker invited us along to a traditional music concert in church. Always welcoming the free ticket, we readily assented and stood for a while chatting to a guy with a beer outside (he was scratching his back against the church wall, as I recall). I thought these guys might have been organising the lights or the tickets but no...this is Ireland and they were the two performers: Tim Edley and Seamus Begley. The concert was amazing - both are superb musicians. We joined them at the pub down the road afterwards for drinks and more locals turned up with their instruments. A great night out.
Doolin, Ireland

A few weeks have passed without my so much as looking at my travelpod. At the moment I am romping around the west coast of Ireland. No plan, no problem. I tend to decide where I am going every day on the basis of what yer man in the pub recommended the night before. So far, so good. The people here are warm and welcoming and excellent conversationalists. Doolin is not much more that a few pubs and cottages along the Burren Way but the night life is electric. The pubs are packed with people who chat and drink and sing into the early hours. There is always an impromptu jam session of traditional instruments going on in some corner. The scenery is also stunning. Today I walked to the Cliffs of Moher with two american backpackers. We opted for the unofficial route (read: goat path along cliff edge) but we were forced to go cross-country through a series of electric fences after encountering a 'bull at large'. When we finally made it back to the main road we had to face a farmer with a shovel who politely explained issues of land ownership and health and safety. Good bloke. The cliffs were well worth the 12km hike - sheer rock-face plunging down into deep clear water. After the morning hike, we had lost all shame and crawled along on our stomachs to the very edge for a jaw-dropping perspective. Spent the afternoon lazing in the sun with the most beautiful view as a backdrop. Then there was the 9km trek back along the official Burren Way. Beautiful day.
Nice, France

So delighted to have arrived in France where I can flex my vocal cords again. Nice is a bit like Copacabana...except you can go walking along the pebbled beach at night and come home with your credit card and vital organs. There is also an excellent market only one street back from the ocean where you can buy oils and glazed fruits, flowers and baguettes, cheese and chocolate...and the coffee is served in soup bowls. Heaven!
