After Geraldton we headed further north (and slightly in land) to Kalbarri, via Port Gregory.  There wasn't much in Port Gregory so we didn't hang around long, we were however totally impressed with the pink lake!!  It's pink because it's home to Beta Carotene.  True story.  It actually doesn't look that pink from my pictures but i can assure you it definitely was.   Anyway, after fascinating ourselves with the pink lake, we took a quick ride into Port Gregory to have a look at the beach and the town and then headed in land to Kalbarri. We pretty much spent most of the day driving, so by the time we hit Kalbarri we found the only pub and ordered a drink and some munchies and relaxed a bit.  The sun was out on force which relaxed us even more.  The whales were coming up close to the shore and were playing around as they migrated further north and we sat and watched the sun go down.  We booked into a caravan park for the first time since being on the road, we kind of figured we were starting to smell and could do with a shower!  It was the nicest hot shower ever!!  I think i was in there for about 40 minutes!!  (it practically took that long to wash my hair, it was so greasy the water was just running off it.. i don't like this backpacking malarkey you know, it's not very clean).  Han and I then decided to cook some prawns on the gas cooker (not quite shrimps on the barbie but please bare in mind we're doing this the cheap way.. do you know how expensive shrimps are?!) and seasoned them with garlic dip.. mmmmmm.  We managed to stink the camper out for days after!!  Hannah swears she actually scrubbed the pan.. i on the other hand disagree.   Carly & Katie then hit the hay and Hannah and I laid on the bench, listening to Cold Play and star gazed.  The star's on the west coast are like nothing i've seen before, there isn't a blank space.. the more you look, the more you see.  Millions and millions of stars and you can even see a galaxy and one of the planets... not sure which one.  I also spotted two shooting stars!!  Of course i made wishes.. we even tried to remember the song but got stuck quite quickly and then got cold and bored and so found comfort back in the camper squashed in with the other two.  it's seriously a tight squeeze in there.  It's a military operation building the bed up, making sure all the windows are totally covered, killing any unwanted bugs and then getting comfy.  We pretty much all spoon each other.  Once one person turns.. we all turn.  The mattresses move from under you so you end up getting dead arm/leg/back/front and someone else always steals all the cover so you end up spending the night shivering away on the cold wooden bed.  It's an experience anyway and wouldn't change it for the world.  Every morning we have the "how did you sleep" conversation, which generally runs for about half an hour.  I'm going to miss these chats when we finally get our own beds.. although for Katie and I, that could be some time. Anyway, in the morning we decided to head out to the national park to see the infamous Natures Window.. only we realised we needed a 4x4 to get down the 30 kilometre dirt track.  I don't think our little camper's suspension would of made it past 5k's, let alone 30.  So anyway, we threw a strop (as you do) about it for a little while and cursed the Australian's for not ripping out all the flaura and fauna and building a nice smooth tarmac road.. and then we hired a 4x4 for $70 and set off to the national park.  It took about half an hour or so to get right into the national park, by the time i stopped my knuckles were white. We ventured around each viewing point and took the little walks around the gorges and valleys and thankfully Hannah didn't manage to hurt herself nor did she fall off the cliff edge.  Katie almost ran over a Kangaroo!  It was a huge grey one which stood about 6ft!!  We snapped some lovely pics and annoyed a group of 'older generation' people until they took group photo's for us and then headed back to the campsite for another hot shower and then off to the pub to watch the Olympics ceremony... what a military operation that was!  It was brilliant don't get me wrong but i found myself getting a bit freaked out by the clones drumming away.  It does make me wonder what we're going to do in 2012.. i bet we balls it up. So after another night of tossing, turning and spooning, we packed up and finished off all the look out points on the way out of Kalbarri and then drove for the rest of the day.. because we totally went the long way round.. to Denham.  We found some random field down a dirt track, which was listed in the "Free Camping Site's" book we picked up prior to embarking on our adventure (don't fancy a $1000 fine) and turned out to be a field in the middle of nowhere with no facilities or anything. Plus it was pitch black by the time we turned up so couldn't even see the layout of the pitches so ended up squeezing ourselves in between two other caravans.  I don't think they were too pleased in the morning that we were camping out in their makeshift gardens but never mind, we packed up pretty early and headed to Denham anyway...

Second day of the road trip!!!!Up bright and early and had a wash in the basin in the toilet block.. nice.  Sat on a bench overlooking the sea and had some breakfast and then waved goodbye to Cervantes and headed further north to Nanbung National Park which is where the Pinnacles are situated.  We paid the entry fee and drove around looking at the desert which backed onto the ocean and all the weird shaped Pinnacles.  We had great fun jumping off the rocks and taking photo's until Hannah; who's nicknamed 'Sicknote', fell over backwards and smacked her head on a Pinnacle!!!  She managed to cut it open so we bandaged her up and put her in the back of the camper!!Next stop was Jurien Bay which was soooo pretty.  Pure white sand and crystal waters.  We had hours of fun taking photo's jumping off the sand and flying through the air.  Thankfully Hannah didn't hurt herself this time!!!! We then drove further north and stopped at Dongra, where we sat on the grass and ate fish and chips!  The girls played in the children's park for a bit and made themselves feel sick from spinning around!!  Then back on the road heading for Geraldton.  We ended up staying in a car park just outside a place called Sunset Beach.  We parked up, got out the little camping seats and table and cooked some noodles for tea and had a few bottles of Strongbow to toast our road trip.  We then spent the rest of the evening all sardined into the camper playing the celebrity game and giggling until we fell asleep. In the morning we drove into Geraldton and wandered around the town for a bit.  We then headed to the museum and to check out the Cathedral and local Theatre which had some mad old style sun dial thing.  Carly and I then walked up the steepest hill i have ever seen to the HMAS Sydney memorial, whilst Katie and Hannah took the easier route and drove.  The memorial had a huge dome made of seagulls, one for every person killed on the HMAS Sydney.  There's also a statue of a lady desperately searching for the boat, she was kind of freaky.  After grabbing some snaps indulging in a well deserved ice lolly, we were back in the camper and headed to Coronation Beach where we set up camp for the night.  We were all pretty shattered from driving so we chilled on the beach for a bit.  We'd been sitting there for about half an hour when we heard a slapping noise.  Then all of a sudden Katie noticed some whales playing in the distance!!  The whales were migrating north so we sat and watched them play for a little while, i think they were minky whales.. but i could be wrong.  Although it's not often i'm wrong. The campsite was listed as having toilet facilities and a shower corner, so figured, as you probably would, that they had toilets and showers.. turns out they had a hole with a toilet seat placed on the top and shower cubicle but you had to bring your own water.  I seriously don't understand how that works.  Needless to say, we moved on smelly.  Hannah won the smelliest vote though as she managed to walk through a huge muddy puddle which drenched all her clothes and completely covered her feet and trainers in red clay.
