Well it has been two weeks now since we got back home.  And what a strange feeling it is.  A lot of people told me nothing will have changed, and in a lot of respects that is true.  I mean new buildings have apeared, people have gotten married and had children, bough houses, settled down, but everyone is inheratley the same.  But what if we have changed?  I think after being away for so long and doing so many amazing things you can't help but be changed by them, if even just a little.But we are home and everything is going well, we are happy and enjoying seeing all the people we have missed.  I just guess we will just miss this travel part that has been such a great time for us both.Take care xx

Bangkok, Thailand

So we flew into Ho chi Minh airport with the hopes of just spending the night sleeping there.  It turned out that it wasn't really a great airport to sleep in and i was having worries about staying there.  We eventually found another couple of people sleeping in a little blocked off area and decided to do the same thing at the other end.We set our bed up and slept ok until at about 4am a very strange man came and decided to wake dave up and start telling him stuff we could not understand.  At first we though he must be telling us to move on but we realised he didn't have a uniform or an ID badge, so we went back to sleep.  I woke up at about 7 to see the strange guy lying about 30cm's away from Dave, just on the ground!  We packed up our stuff and quickley tried to lose him.We made it to Bangkok fine, and were greeted with people scurtinising us incase we had swine flu.  We went back up to the departures area and hailed down a taxi just droping people off.  We hadn't organised any accomodation and got the taxi to drop us off just near Kahosan Rd.  We wandered around for about half an hour looking for something that was cheep but not gross, and ended up splurging a bit and getting a nice room (well it was our last few nights!).I decided that we really had to do something while we were in bangkok this time.  So on our 2nd day we walked down past the palace to the warf area and haggled for a boat ride.  Of course this was meant to include the floating markets and a snake farm, but neith was seen.  Despite this it was a nice trip around the real Bangkok and we saw people getting their food off boats delivering to their back door and lots of temples.  I also saw a huge dragon (you know lizard thing) hiding out under one of the houses, Dave missed it though.After that we went and saw Wat Pho where the reclining Buddah is.  He was very cool and absloutly massive, actually the whole temple complex was the best one we had seen in SE Asia.  So after wandering about we headed back home.  The rest of our last stop was spent doing a little shopping and trying to find some amazing thai food.  We found the street guys really were the cheapest and the best.And then it was all over, our trip, our overseas adventour, our life for the last 2 and a half years.  We boarded our plane and before we knew it the piolet was saying "We will be touching down in Sydney soon, please make sure your seat belts are fastened and your seats and tray tables are returned to thrie original position.........."

Hoi An, Vietnam

07/06/09-11/06/09The train journey was again very comfortable, but just as we were settling down to go to sleep the train had to brake very suddenly.  When we had stopped I looked out the window to see a lone shoe.  The thought that we had hit someone briefly passed through my mind, but I tried to dismiss it until I craned my head a bit further ahead and saw a guy poking out from under the train!  He looked pretty bad and was unconscious but breathing.  Lucky for him I think it was just his motor bike that got clipped and he thrown off.  The locals after a bit of staring eventually decided to pick his unconscious body by the arms and legs and drag him under the train to the other side of the train, and then throw him up onto the back of a truck to take him to the hospital.  An ambulance did come a few minutes later, but I suppose they knew best.  We continued on our way shortly after, all feeling a bit shaken. Luckily the rest of the journey was quiet and we made it to Hoi An pretty much on time.  We stayed at a place recommended to us by some people we had met in Lao, and even though it was more then we wanted to pay it ended up being a really nice option.  I will cut this short, we went to the beach, swam in the hotel pool, ate amazing food and relaxed in our room.  That is all we did and we enjoyed it.  It is a really cool little place here, the beach is amazing and the locals friendly.  A very nice place to finish our trip.  OH, we also go some coats made so we are now ready for winter at home.

Sapa, Vietnam

28/05/09-04/06/09 The flight into Vietnam has to be the shortest flight I have ever been on.  I think we were in the air for a maximum of 40 minuets.  We found few people on the flight who were heading to the same area as us so we shared a taxi with them and went to the same hotel.  The rooms were super nice with air con and cable TV, so we were beginning to suspect that the price of $7.50 US was actually per person not per room (and we ended up being right). We had a quiet night and a nice meal and decided to look into getting to Sapa the next day.  When we woke up we discovered that one of the English girls had gotten gastro and was feeling really rough so the trip to Sapa was going to be delayed for them.  We booked the train for that night with out to much problem (just a bit of bargaining) and decided to check out Hanoi. It was so much bigger and busier then anything we had seen in Lao, so it took some getting used to all the beeping horns and smog and crazy drivers again.  The area we were staying was the old quarter so lots of little winding streets with tall old French style buildings crowding out any remaining light.  It was authentic.  We wandered around the lake and headed to the literary temple.  It was nice inside the grounds, the high walls stopped some of the noise and the gardens were nice and green and refreshing.  I liked the different style building too, much more Chinese looking then the temples we saw in Lao.  It was worth a quick look about. The train for Sapa left that night at 9pm And Was expected to be an 8 hr journey.  It was actually a good trip, we had booked hard sleepers and it was really very comfortable, so much better then an overnight bus.  We (Dave, I, Jak and M) all slept quiet well and were feeling ok to face the day.  Things started a bit chaotically by me leaving my ticket on the train and having to run back to get it so I could leave the station, and then trying to find a bus to get us to Bac Ha instead of Sapa.  We wanted to go and see the local traditional markets which were only on a Sunday (the day we had arrived) so we had to find the one local bus to get us there.  We got ripped off (again) but did manage to talk the guy down from 180,000 dong to 70,000 dong each. The drive to Bac Ha was very pretty up lots of mountainous roads, but was slow and took 2 hrs.  The markets were cool and we saw heaps of ethnic minorities in their traditional clothes.  There wasn’t much to buy, but it was interesting to see the buffalo being sold and the pigs getting shoved into bags to be taken home (they can make some noise!).  We then got the bus back to the train station (after sitting on the bus for over an hr while they loaded it up with everything and anything) to be taken on wards to Sapa. It was quite chilly by the time we had arrived in Sapa, and the clouds had rolled in making it almost impossible to see.  We followed a couple of other people who ad been before to their hotel and booked into a very nice room that even had a bath.  We had and enjoyed our first hot shower in ages before checking out the town. It was a nice place and felt a little more like Europe then Vietnam.  Unfortunately the views that are meant to be amazing were hidden from us by cloud, for the whole time we were there.  We found a day tour to do for the next day, hiking to some local villages and went to play cards at our hotel.  Just as we were getting started guess who we should run into but Nic.  It had taken her 5 days to get over the border in to Sapa from when we last saw her in Muang Ngoi, we were very glad we had decided to fly! We woke up the next day to cloud and rain, a perfect day for hiking!  We made a very sensible purchase on a few ponchos and headed out for the walk.  Our guide picked us up in an old US army jeep and we headed to the start of the trek.  As soon as we got out of the car we were swamped by local women with umbrellas, and there were so many of them.  Our guide said they would walk with us the whole way and try and get us to buy things off them.  We weren’t too pleased with this, but after the initial swamping they kind of let us be a bit more.  I did make friends with on of the ladies from a Red Dao tribe who could speak quiet good English. The first bit of the walk was down hill and very easy we walked through a few local villages and enjoyed views of the rice paddies.  The clouds were very thick though so it was hard to see to far into the distance.  We stopped for lunch at the last of the lower villages and had nice fresh baguettes with egg and salad.   The walk then got a lot harder and more adventurous.  We ascended up the side of the mountain and started to walk up through the rice paddies.  Because it had rained so much overnight and was still raining, the path was very, very muddy, and hence very, very slippery.  Our little ladies who were left (I think there was only 3 now) helped us through the rough parts so that we wouldn’t slide down the mountain.  Although it was slow going and really a bit dangerous in places, I quite enjoyed myself. At the end we did end up buying some things off our ladies, we kind f felt we had to, Dave would have been still stuck up there somewhere or lying somewhere down the bottom if his little ladies hadn’t held on to him (he blamed his shoes).  As it was Jak fell over at one stage and almost slid about 20 meters down the hill.We were hoping to get the train back to Hanoi that night but it was full so we spent another night in Sapa and then spent the whole next day doing nothing!  It was raining again and we felt we had already spent one day getting wet.  The train back was good again but we arrived at like 5 am, so it was a long day to spend back in Hanoi.   We met back up with Adam and Jackie and their friends Scott and Jessica and decided to go to Halong bay together the next day.  After looking in about 10 different agencies we settled on one we hopped was giving us a fair deal.  We ended up booking a deluxe option and paying $82 US each for 3 days, we hoped that by sp ending that little extra we would avoid the bad boats that you an sometimes be stuck with. That night the first sate of origin was on so we found a pub that would play it and introduced the Canadians to some Australian football.  Unfortunately NSW lost.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

04/06/09-06/06/09 The trip out to Halong Bay was fine, a bit squashy, but fine.  We had to wait in the scorching heat for ages until we were finally able to get on to our boat, but it was worth while.  While not super deluxe it was a nice boat and we had a comfy bed and air con.  Also Jackie, Adam and us had a private balcony which made us feel a bit more special. The food was good, lots of sea food and nice and fresh.  For the first day we sailed to the first stop, the ‘amazing cave’. I don’t know if it was exactly amazing, but it was very big and nice and cool compared to the out side temp.  We were then able to kayak about the bay for a measly 30 mins and explore a few caves on our own.  It was then back on the boat for another hour or so of sailing.  It was a really nice afternoon, we sat up on the roof drinking some cold beers and watching the hundreds of towering islands floating by. We had a great night eating and drinking and of course singing karaoke!  We all drank a little too much, and even Dave then had the courage to sing a few lines, it was the gambler that eventually got him up to sing.  We knew it was time to go to bed though when we started trying to sing Vietnamese songs with the boat crew.  The next morning we had to all get up way to early to eat breakfast and clear out our rooms for the next people who were to be getting on. We were next dropped off at Cat Ba Island where we were going to do a trek up a mountain to see the great view.  I was feeling so sick I was sure I was going to vomit half way up.  By some amazing feat I made it to the top but opted to sit in the shade rather then attempt to climb up the viewing platform.  As it turns out it was a good idea because the view up the top was not better then where I was sitting.  It wasn’t even that great, the bay was not to be seen. I would recommend not doing the trek, not worth it, especially if you have a hang over! Our next stop was to be Monkey Island where we were going to be spending the night.  This was one of the highlights I think.  We had our own beach with cute little beach huts.  The huts had a private bathroom and air con, so it was very fancy for us.  The beach was beautiful and the water so nice and blue.  We were warned about monkeys coming into our rooms and stealing things but we didn’t even see a monkey let alone get anything stolen.  That afternoon I was feeling sleepy so stayed at the beach to read on a deck chair while the others went out for a kayak.  One of the kayaks ended up filling up with water and near sinking, so I was quiet happy with my choice even though they saw a monkey on another island (yes I know I am lazy). The final day was spent travelling back to Hanoi.  We had to get back on a small boat back to Cat Ba Island then drive over to the other side to get back on another small boat to take us to our big boat which would take us back to the harbour.  Yes it was as annoying as it sounds.  The whole trip was really nice, but there were so many moves and changes involved, it would have all been much nicer if it involved a bit more swimming and sailing rather then jumping on and off different means of transport. We got back to Hanoi mid afternoon and wasted a few hours before we had to get our sleeper train to Hoi An.  We said good bye to Jackie and Adam and went to our last stop in our very short Vietnam trip.

Muang Ngoi, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

24/05/09-28/05/09 It was time for some chilling out, so we headed to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi for a few days chilling in a hammock.  The mini van to Nong Khiaw was uneventful and we arrived in three hours.  The town its self was in a pretty area, but didn't have a very exciting feel so we left after one night.  We met a German girl called Nic on our mini van and we all decided to head for Muang Ngoi together.  The only way to get there was via boat, so we squeezed ourselves and our bags onto the already full boat and headed off.  It was again very pretty and an hour later we arrived. Muang Ngoi was a very tiny little village surrounded by huge jungle covered mountains.  We chose the first bungalows we got to and for 40,000kip a night we had front row seat to the river views and a great little hammock.  The town only had electricity for 3 hours a night, so it was all very rustic, but very relaxing all the same. The day we arrived turned out to be a bit of a party day.  There had been two babies born recently and they were having their own Buddhist style christenings.  A British guy who was staying at the same place as came to see if we wanted to go with him to one of them as he had become friends with the family, so we decided to go along.  I am still not sure if this was a good or bad idea.  By the time we had arrived (1pm) everyone was completely smashed on Lao Lao (basically the Laoation moonshine) and were dancing and singing their way about the room.   We were quickly drag inside and offered food and drink and it would have been rude to say no.  Lao Lao, what can I say about Lao Lao.  It is awful, and after having three or four shots poured down my throat, I really didn't think I could take any more.  But they came at me again and after futilely trying to say no I got it poured all over me instead.  Dave didn't really fair much better, but despite smelling like a distillery we still had a great day. The rest of our time here was much quieter.  We did manage to visit a cave with Nic, which was very cool.  It had an underground spring so the water inside was crystal clear and freezing.  We swam in side in the dark for a while until Dave told us he saw a fish as long as his arm and scared me and Nic half to death.  Other than that we sat in our hammocks and read and relaxed the days away. Unfortunately coming back to Luang Prabang wasn't as easy, and we all crammed onto a Songthew (we all being 20).  It was crowded and uncomfortable but bearable until it started to rain.  And of course Dave and I were up the front where we got soaked and our bags were the front ones and also go soaked.  Oh yeah and of course we had just hand washed and dried half of our clothes the day before......

Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

20/05/09-23/05/09 We enjoyed our time in Luang Prabang.  It is another major city in Lao that has the feeling of a relaxed small town.  We organised a tour on our first day to see the major attractions, that being a cave and a waterfall (surprise!).  To get to the cave we had to get a little wooden longboat.  It took about 2 or so hours to go up the river, but the scenery was amazing, and it was very relaxing.   The cave itself was a little disappointing, the entrance was cool, white steeps leading into the cave mouth up from the river with a white fortress like fence running along it.  The inside was meant to be full of thousands of Buddha statues looming from the darkness, but really they were just paced about and looking not all that spectacular.  We then walked up about 1 million steps in the heat to get to a similarly disappointing cave (only this one was darker so we couldn't see anything).  The most interesting and saddest thing were all the little children up and down the stairs, they were all carrying tiny little bird cages with birds crammed in them.  Apparently if you released them you got good luck.  It was sad to see the birds stuck in there like that, but you just knew the kids would some how just catch them again. Next we went to the waterfall.  This was very beautiful and had numerous swimming holes that you could cool off in.  The water was a lovely blue colour and the whole area was surrounded in lush green rain forest.  We decided to take a very dodgy looking path to the top of the falls.  It was basically just mud and tree roots, and I was not looking forward to going back down.  It was hard work as it was very steep, but once we got to the top the view and the falls were very rewarding. We stayed at the top for a while enjoying the natural shower and Dave jumping off the rocks into a deep pool below.  Luckily the other people at the top told us an easier way to get down, and after following a small water course on the other side of the falls we arrived at some stairs that took us the rest of the way down.  Trust us to find the hardest way to get there! The next night we caught up with the Canadians again, we had a few drinks and played some pool and meet another couple of Australians (Ben and Phil).  As 11:30 came around the bar staff told us curfew was starting and we would have to leave.  So we finished our drinks resigned to the fact that the night was over.  Well that was when we were introduced to ten pin bowling, Lao style. It turns out that bowling is the only thing you can do in Luang Prabang after curfew starts.  We got bundled into a tuk tuk and headed out of town a little.  Some how we managed to by pass the '50,000kip entrance fee' and dodgy men trying to sell drugs, and ended up inside a very western looking bowling alley.  There was of course plenty of beer Lao to drink, but other then that is was just about the bowling.  We had a great night and we all did very badly (I think the highest score was about 110). The next day was again extremely hot, so we (us and the Canadians) decided to find another waterfall to go swimming in.  After talking to about 5 different tuk tuk drivers and letting them do the bargaining for us (each one would just keep undercutting his friend) we told our driver where we wanted to go and off we went, or so we thought.  Our driver took us about 5 mins down the road and then stopped and said, "So where do you want to go?"  Turns out he didn't know how to get there and gave us three options, the one we had been to, one that didn't have any water at this time of year or the one that all the locals went to and this one he seemed very excited about.  So thinking we might have found  a little hidden gem, went for option three.  Our driver then took a small detour to his house to pick up his swimmers and a mango. Well it wasn't quite the gem we thought it would have been, but it turned out to be a fun afternoon.  The water was brown and the waterfall was really very small and not that attractive.  I still had my dressing on my leg so I didn't really want to get t wet  I found a nice little rapid and sat there in the water with my leg out and Jackie sat up in a natural 'bath'.  The boys went down and played with the locals in the bottom bit. It was interesting watching all the locals swim fully clothed and do a bit of washing while they were there.  It was also a bit of a party with a Lao style DJ and people going up to have a sing.  After we had a swim we sat near the band and watched for a while.  We were the only white people there and got harassed for a bit by the DJ saying "You falang, you white people, you come dance.  You come dance now!"  It was all very harmless, but very persistent, so when our tuk tuk driver dragged one of us up we all though we should go!  But we did leave not long after that.....

Vang Vieng, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

16/05/09-19/05/09 We decided to head to Vang Vieng and stay there for a few days, rather than hang about in Vientiane.  We organised a bus from our hotel and were picked up at 1:30pm.  It was a songthew that got us, and we loaded our stuff into it with a few Canadians.  The songthew then preceded to drive us around in circles for about 5 minutes until we were all very disorientated.  We got dropped off at another guest house/tourist office and then waited there for a good while in the sun (realising that we were a 2min walk from our hotel).  A mini van then came and we (and about 12 others) crammed ourselves in and prepared to wait to leave for Vang Vieng.  Well after another 30mins or so the mini van dropped us off at the local bus station instead and we were herded into yet another vehicle (this time a 22 seater coaster) and finally we hoped we were on our way. The journey was fine, but our driver was a bit crazy about the windows being closed.  It was meant to have a/c but it really didn't seem to work so well.  The Canadians (Jackie, Adam and Trevor) who had been on our first bus decided to join us in finding a hotel.  We settled on a nice place that might have been a bit pricey, but that guaranteed good views (it was dark by this stage so we couldn't see anything).  Our first taste of Vang Vieng life was looking out from our balcony as the bars across the river all turned on their lights and started playing music at full blare! We all went out for dinner and ended up at a place called cue bar that a guy on the street recommend we go to.  It was a crazy little place but the food was cheap and the whisky buckets cheaper so we settled in for a few drinks.  A lot of the people working there seemed to be 'falangs' and not locals. When we asked one of them they said that they didn't get payed but worked for drink and food (and drugs).  Basically Vang Vieng is the kind of place backpackers go to, get completely smashed every day by the river and then continue on into the night.  Lots of people seem to get stuck, one person we talked to had been there for 3 mths! We made a bit of a night of it having a few drinks and when the bar closed at midnight we thought we would try one of the bars on the river.  These were all winding down though as well and we stayed for about an hour before deciding it wasn't really worth it.  In Laos there is a curfew, so everyone is meant to be home and in bed by midnight.  The rules are relaxed a bit for foreigners, but the bars are still meant to be closed.  It seems in Vang Vieng the police let things slide a bit, but they still like to flex their muscles every now and again.  We grabbed a really cheap and awesome baguette on the way home (chicken cheese bacon and salad) and headed for bed. The next morning we didn't wake up until about midday so we decided to call it a right off and chill around the town.  It turned out that the views from our balcony were amazing so it wasn't a hard decision.  There wasn't very much happening about the place, but we did manage to find a bar playing the NRL so we sat down to watch some real footie (the first since leaving home).  We caught up with the Canadians again that night and had a few drinks over cards and pool. Tubing was the name of the game for our last day in Vang Vieng.  This is was this town is meant to be all about.  So we headed up about 4kms from the town to the start of the tubing fun.  The place was crazy, it was 1pm and everyone was completely drunk or off their face on mushrooms.  Music was blaring and people were everywhere in the water or in the bars.  There were lots of rope swings and zip lines set up so people could swing into the water, basically it was a fun park for adults. We sat down to enjoy a beer before getting into the water.  I had my leg taped up with a plastic bag and the hope was to keep it as dry as possible.  Dave and Adam started the day with a huge zip line thing that left you with about a 7 meter drop into the water, the rest of us sat and watched ;). The day basically paned out like this: get into the water on your tube float down the river for a bit until you see a bar you like (or until you needed a drink).  The bar would throw out a rope to you and then you would hang on while they dragged you in.  Then you would sit by the river in the sun have a drink or two, jump from a zip line and continue on your merry way.  The only problem is that you are having such a good time you forget that there is still a good few KM's to go, and by the time you realise it is starting to get dark and cold.  You are meant to take the tubes back by 6, we arrived back at 7:05. Oops. The next day it was back to Vientiane to pick up our visa's and then head to Luang Prabang.
